SUMMARY:The Jumpsuit Project: Artist Talk with Sherrill Roland
DESCRIPTION:Sherrill Roland began his socially engaged artwork The Jumpsuit Project in 2016 and continues to use his project to ignite conversations around issues related to mass incarceration. While a graduate student\, Roland was wrongfully convicted and spent over ten months in prison. Although eventually exonerated of all charges and granted a bill of innocence\, his experiences with the justice system had a lasting effect on both his life and his artistic practice. When he returned to campus\, he wore an orange jumpsuit everyday up to and during his graduation ceremony\, encouraging all who encountered him and his jumpsuit to address their own prejudices toward those incarcerated. Through sharing his own story\, and creating a space for others to process\, question\, and share\, he sheds light on the enormous darkness incarceration brings. \nSince graduating with his MFA from the University of North Carolina in Greensboro in May of 2017\, Roland has been traveling widely to exhibit\, perform\, and discuss his experience and art. In 2017 the New York Times included Roland in their list “From the Personal to the Political\, 19 Artists to Watch Next Year\,” and in 2018 The Studio Museum in Harlem exhibited his The Jumpsuit Project\, which they acquired for their permanent collection. \nFor more information\, see: https://www.jumpsuitproject.com/

DESCRIPTION:Each April 2nd\, Autism Speaks celebrates the start of its signature campaign\, Light It Up Blue\, along with the international autism community in recognition of UN sanctioned World Autism Awareness Day and April\, World Autism Month . Thousands of iconic landmarks and buildings join the hundreds of thousands of homes and communities around the world to “light blue” in support of people living with autism. Monmouth University will be joining the campaign lighting dramatically lighting up the Monmouth Library and Wilson Hall for the entire month of April.

DESCRIPTION:Joint Ocean Commission Initiative Co-Chair and former New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman will be among the honorees at the Monmouth University Urban Coast Institute’s 12th Annual Future of the Ocean Symposium and Champions of the Ocean Awards Luncheon on December 7\, 2016. The theme for this year’s symposium is America’s Ocean Future: Priorities for Congress and Next Administration. \nThe symposium will be held from 10 a.m. to noon in Wilson Hall\, and is free and open to the public. \nThe awards luncheon will follow from noon to 1:30 p.m. Tickets are required to attend the luncheon\, and online ticket orders will be available shortly. \nDr. Donald Boesch\, President of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science\, will receive the UCI’s Regional Champion of the Ocean Award and serve as the second symposium speaker along with Gov. SUMMARY:Resonance Collective Dance Performance
DESCRIPTION:Erlanger Gardens will come to life with a site-specific performance event invoking the wonder and desire of nature through a visceral landscape of moving bodies and sound. Monmouth University has united visual artist Lucy Kalian\, whose work is being shown this semester in the Pollak Gallery and The Resonance Collective; a collaborative interdisciplinary dance and vocal ensemble\, bringing our environment to life through stunning imagery and virtuosic physicality. The Erlanger Garden performance will begin at 12:00PM and will feature an original dance and electronic/live vocal piece. This is the beginning of a day-long event culminating in the Pollak Gallery opening of Lucy’s Swells and Soundings exhibit at 6:30PM. Within her exhibit\, Lucy explores the tidal forces at work where land and water meet. This exhibit is cosponsored by the Urban Coast Institute.  \nErlanger Gardens are located\nright outside Wilson Hall. Pollak Theatre will serve as the location for the dance\nperformance in the event of rain.
