SUMMARY:Motivational Interviewing: Beyond the Basics
DESCRIPTION:The Motivational Interviewing: Beyond the Basics workshop targets practitioners who want to develop and reinforce skills as well as those that are new to practice. The learner will consider MI’s application to a broad use of behavior changes ranging from health behaviors to substance use. The workshop is comprised of a largely didactic model. Learners will leave with an enhanced knowledge of tangible clinical interventions to be utilized with clients\, targeting collaboratively identified problem behaviors. \nThe following content areas will be included: \n\nAn overview of research that guides motivational interviewing’s increasing focus on recognizing\, reinforcing\, and evoking change language.\n\n\nThe four processes of motivational interviewing and how they are used to develop change-inspired conversation.\n\n\nTangible skills for eliciting change talk with their clients and to effectively respond in a way that evokes additional change language.\nTechniques used to gain and enhance motivation towards meaningful behavior changes.\n\nDesired learning outcome: Participants will apply the concepts and techniques learned to enhance motivation toward meaningful behavior change. \nPresenter: Bernard Showers\, DSW\, LCSW\, Adjunct Professor at Shippensburg University\, University of Maryland\, and Simmons University\, Dr. Showers is an educator\, researcher and a MINT member specializing in Motivational Interviewing and having trained aspiring and active independent practitioners around the U.S. \nContact Hours: 5 contact hours for Nurses / 5 clinical CEUS for Social Workers / all others will receive a certification of completion. Co-Sponsered with the School of Social Work \nPre-registration is required for all attendees. \nSuccessful Completion: Participants will attend 100% of the program and complete an online evaluation to receive contact hours. Planners\, content experts and speakers have declared no conflict of interest. There is no commercial support for this activity. \nSocial Work CEUs—Provided by the Monmouth University School of Social Work Professional Education  Program (PEP) and recognized by the New Jersey Board of Social Work Examiners. SUMMARY:Collective Unconscious: Artist Talk with Amanda Stojanov
DESCRIPTION:Amanda Stojanov is an artist\, educator\, and activist. Her work explores storytelling through multi-tech platforms including VR\, immersive audio/visual projection\, animation\, and others. She has worked with design teams in large design studios\, independent agencies\, and non-profit organizations\, and she continues to work as a freelance art director and designer. Stojanov is a member/co-founder at voidLab and co-founder of voidLab’s panel series DECENTRALIZING THE WEB (projects.dma.ucla.edu/voidlab)\, which cultivates critical evaluations of online presence through an intersectional feminist lens. It aims to untangle the psycho-social implications of identity politics on the global web\, examining the embedded biases driving dominant modes of representation in digital spaces. \nStojanov has exhibited her work in California\, Budapest\, and Linz. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Interactive Digital Media in Monmouth University’s Department of Communication. Previously she worked as an educator at Art Center College of Design\, UCLA\, and Loyola Marymount University. \nStojanov’s work can be seen at: https://amandastojanov.com/

SUMMARY:Goldfish Learning Laboratory: An Unconventional Approach to Teaching Psychology of Learning
DESCRIPTION:Since Fall 2017\, the Psychology Department at Monmouth University has used an unconventional live animal model –goldfish – as an active learning tool to teach students hands on about various principles of psychology. In this open classroom session\, attendees will be able to view an oral presentation and corresponding live animal demonstrations on topics relating to Pavlovian and operant conditioning\, choice and preference\, memory\, cognition\, and welfare. Attendees will also be able to view a poster in the room that displayed data collected by students in previous semesters during the goldfish labs. Protocols and lesson plans will be provided to attendees as well. During the course\, students are required to demonstrate knowledge of species-typical behavior and husbandry care of goldfish before working with goldfish directly. Next\, students observe naturalistic goldfish behavior and create operational definitions in preparation for collecting data on different training paradigms. Overall\, this session will showcase how a wide range of basic and applied learning concepts can be taught through an active learning approach with live animals. These types of procedures are not limited to just goldfish; they are also applicable to human behavior as well.
