DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate the spring at Monmouth University with this unique opportunity to learn the seasonal ancient art known as Pysanky. Pysanky\, also known as Ukrainian eggs\, is an ancient folk tradition that has been passed down for thousands of years. This meditative and communal experience is unlike any other art process and for many this workshop marks the beginning of a spring time family tradition that can be passed on and enjoyed for years to come. This tutorial will cover the history and traditions surrounding Pysanky\, a demonstration\, and independent practice session. The instructor will provide a variety of eggs\, dyes\, and tools. Participants will turn real eggs into works of art using a wax resist method similar to batik. A great deal of patience and concentration is required to complete a single egg\, but it is very rewarding to reveal your hard work when the wax layers are taken off. In-person attendance will be extremely limited. \nNo prerequisite skills are required. Please bring a container or old egg carton to take home your creation. Ages 18+

DESCRIPTION:Co-sponsored by Dept. of Computer Science & Software Engineering (CSSE) and the New Jersey Coast Section of IEEE \nTuesday\, November 10\, 2015 \n7 – 9 p.m. \nBey Hall 113 (Young Auditorium) \nRSVP Information: Not required\, though you may register at Technical Talk – Digital Forensics at the Intersection of Public Policy and Civil Rights. \nThis event will feature networking and refreshments\, guest speaker\, and Q & A. \nDigital forensics is a rapidly expanding field where practitioners apply scientific techniques in order to investigate and draw conclusions about evidence\, with the goal of presenting findings in courtroom settings. The manner in which the forensics expert is required to perform their work is greatly influenced by prior court rulings and government laws\, both recent and older ones dating back to the Nation’s founding. Some public policy and civil rights issues related to computers and digital data will be explored using examples from the speaker’s casework\, as well as newsworthy current events. \nABOUT THE SPEAKER:\nDr. Rebecca Mercuri is the owner of Notable Software\, Inc. where she provides digital forensics investigations and expert witness services for criminal and civil matters\, along with computer security and certification compliance evaluations. \nEducation includes a B.S. in Computer Science from Penn State\, M.S. in Computer Science from Drexel University\, as well as an M.S. in Engineering and Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. During 2003-2005 she was a fellow at Harvard University\, performing research on computer security topics\, and has testified to local\, state and federal government agencies on the many inherent problems with electronic voting systems. Her sworn testimony in Bush v. Gore was cited in briefs to the U.S. Supreme Court. \nDr. Mercuri’s publications include a book chapter on Digital Image Forensics\, and numerous Security Watch and Inside Risks articles for the Communications of the ACM magazine\, where she also served as a Contributing Editor. Rebecca has held leadership roles with the Association of Computing Machinery\, the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers\, and the Audio Engineering Society\, and is a frequent presenter at conferences and events promoting STEM education. SUMMARY:Fall Poetry Festival
DESCRIPTION:The day will consist of readings by nationally known poets\, some of whom will conduct poetry workshops for participants. The keynote readers will be Pulitzer Prize winner Stephen Dunn and Cave Canem Fellow Rachel Eliza Griffiths. \nStephen Dunn was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry for Different Hours. His many other books include New and Selected Poems\, 1974-1994\, What Goes On: Selected and New Poems 1995-2009\, and\, most recently\, Here and Now. \nRachel Eliza Griffiths is the author of Miracle Arrhythmia\, The Requited Distance\, and\, most recently\, Mule & Pear. A photographer and painter as well as a poet\, she teaches at Sarah Lawrence College. \nIn addition\, a dozen nationally known local poets will give brief readings: Gabe Barabas\, Michael Broek\, Prescott Evarts\, Laura McCullough\, Yesenia Montilla\, Mihaela Moscaliuc\, Suzanne Parker\, Lauren Schmidt\, Michael Paul Thomas\, Michael Waters\, BJ Ward\, and Daniel Weeks.
