SUMMARY:History of Slavery in New Jersey
DESCRIPTION:Class Schedule: Thursdays – Feb. 17\, Feb. 24\, and Mar. 3 | 7:30 – 9:00 PM \nThis three-session virtual course taught by Rick Geffken will cover the period of historic New Jersey slavery starting in the 1620s to the passage of the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1865. Attendees will learn that New Jersey was the last northern state to agree to abolish slavery once and for all\, after many furtive attempts. The course will highlight the enslavement of African Americans and Lenape Native Americans in Monmouth County. Runaway slave ads in newspapers\, maps\, and images of the enslaved and slaveholders will illustrate how endemic and important slavery was to the growth of the Garden State. Stories gathered from contemporary descendants of enslaved people will provide insight into a vital part of American history only now coming to public attention. Attendees will be introduced to the work of many scholars who have studied and published books on slavery in New Jersey. \nZoom Link will be provided upon registration.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Night Book Club: Toni Morrison\, Beloved
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Tuesday Night Book Club! Hosted by Monmouth University’s Ken Womack\, each month we’ll explore a different novel. All you have to do is Zoom in and join the discussion! \nThis month’s novel is Toni Morrison’s Beloved. The magnificent Pulitzer Prize–winning work that brought the wrenching experience of slavery into the literature of our time\, enlarging our comprehension of America’s original sin.  Upon the original publication of Beloved in 1987\, John Leonard wrote in the Los Angeles Times: “I can’t imagine American literature without it.” Nearly two decades later\, The New York Times chose Beloved as the best American novel of the previous fifty years. \nSet in post–Civil War Ohio\, it is the story of Sethe\, an escaped slave who has lost a husband and buried a child; who has withstood savagery and not gone mad. Sethe\, who now lives in a small house on the edge of town with her daughter\, Denver\, her mother-in-law\, Baby Suggs\, and a disturbing\, mesmerizing apparition who calls herself Beloved. Sethe works at “beating back the past\,” but it makes itself heard and felt incessantly: in her memory; in Denver’s fear of the world outside the house; in the sadness that consumes Baby Suggs; in the arrival of Paul D\, a fellow former slave; and\, most powerfully\, in Beloved\, whose childhood belongs to the hideous logic of slavery and who has now come from the “place over there” to claim retribution for what she lost and for what was taken from her. \nWe are still waiting for more information about whether we will be able to hold this event in person. However\, we are also committed to continuing offering access virtually to Tuesday Night Book Club for all our new audiences! You can register now for Zoom access to the event. When you register you will be provided the meeting link to join the conversation.
\nPlease stay tuned for more details about an in-person location for this event when more information becomes available.

SUMMARY:Who We Are: A Chronicle of Racism in America
DESCRIPTION:Documentary’s subject\, directors will be on hand for live\, post-screening discussion\n\n\n\nThe Count Basie Center for the Arts Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion Task Force\, in conjunction with Monmouth University’s Social Justice Academy and Intercultural Center\, will host a special screening of the new Sony Pictures Classic documentary Who We Are: A Chronicle Of Racism In America at 7 p.m. on Tuesday\, February 15 at the Count Basie Center’s Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre\, 99 Monmouth Street\, Red Bank. \nThe screening\, which is free and open to the public\, will be followed by a live discussion with directors Emily Kunstler and Sarah Kunstler\, along with former American Civil Liberties Union Deputy Legal Director Jeffery Robinson\, whose presentation and research on anti-Black racism and white supremacy in America provides the focus of and narrative the documentary. \nIn Who We Are: A Chronicle of Racism in America\, Robinson faces his largest audience\, asking all of us to examine who we are\, where we come from\, and who we want to be. Anchored by a 2018 performance by Robinson at New York City’s Town Hall theater\, the film interweaves historical and present-day archival footage\, Robinson’s personal story\, and vérité and interview footage capturing Robinson’s meetings with Black change-makers and eyewitnesses to history. From a hanging tree in Charleston\, South Carolina\, to a walking tour of the origins of slavery in colonial New York\, to the site of a 1947 lynching in rural Alabama\, the film brings history to life\, exploring the enduring legacy of white supremacy and our collective responsibility to overcome it. \n“Knowledge is power\,” Robinson says in a statement accompanying the film. “A false narrative about the role of white supremacy and anti-Black racism in America has led to our failure to make significant\, lasting progress on the issue of racial justice. Knowledge can change people’s views\, people’s opinions\, and their behavior. I never saw this as a question of whether I would make this information public\, but how I could do it in the broadest way possible.” \nFor more information on the film\, and Robinson’s Who We Are Project – an outgrowth of the presentation detailed in the film\, visit www.whoweareproject.com. \n

DESCRIPTION:Prior to purchasing tickets please review our COVID-19 Safety Measures and Policies.\nPurchasing tickets in advance is STRONGLY encouraged. Due to distanced seating in the theatre\, capacity is limited and walk-ups might not be able to be accommodated. \nMusic Gabriel Fauré\, Igor Stravinsky\, Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky\nChoreography George Balanchine \nEmeralds for the elegance and sophistication of Paris\, rubies for the speed and modernity of New York\, and diamonds for an imperial St. Petersburg. Three sparkling scenes accompanied by the music of three essential composers\, feature the styles of the three dance schools that have contributed to making George Balanchine a legend of modern ballet. \nThis glamorous triptych was inspired by Balanchine’s visit to the famous jeweler Van Cleef & Arpels on New York’s Fifth Avenue\, and created as an homage to the cities and dance schools of Paris\, New York and St. Petersburg that made a vital impact on the revered choreographer’s career.

Brown\, including a show-stopping step dance in Act III\, stars an exceptional cast including baritone Will Liverman and sopranos Angel Blue and Latonia Moore. Don’t miss the landmark production—hailed as “a watershed moment for American opera” by The Washington Post \nContent Advisory: Fire Shut Up in My Bones addresses adult themes and contains some adult language.

All you have to do is Zoom in and join the discussion! \nThis month’s novel is Thomas Pynchon\, The Crying of Lot 49. DESCRIPTION:Class Schedule: Thursdays – Dec. 2\, Dec. 9\, and Dec. 16 | 7:30 – 9:00 PM \nThe History of Simon & Garfunkel…Together and Apart – If you took the sweet harmonies of the Everly Brothers and matched them with the lyricism of Bob Dylan the result might be Simon & Garfunkel.
