SUMMARY:Souls Shot Portrait Project
DESCRIPTION:The Souls Shot Portrait Project pairs fine artists with families and friends of victims of gun violence. The artists create portraits using diverse approaches and emphasize the individuality and uniqueness of the victims portrayed. The project began in Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania\, in 2016\, and the resulting exhibitions have featured many talented artists throughout the years. \nThe mission of The Souls Shot Portrait Project is to bring attention to and memorialize the lives lost and their families’ lives tragically altered due to gun violence. Too many times\, those killed by violent means are remembered by the catastrophe of their final days. SUMMARY:Diversity\, Equity\, Inclusion\, and Ocean Justice
DESCRIPTION:The Monmouth University Institute for Global Understanding (IGU) and Urban Coast Institute (UCI) will host the virtual panel discussion “Diversity\, Equity\, Inclusion\, and Ocean Justice” on March 9. The event is this year’s first installment of the Global Ocean Governance Lecture Series\, which assembles international experts to discuss scientific and policy issues that hold important implications for coastal and marine ecosystems. The discussion will be moderated by Professor Randall Abate\, director of the IGU\, and include the following presentations and speakers: \n\n“From Accounting for\, to Accountability to: Reciprocity and Restitution in Collaborative Climate Change Research” by Monica Barra\, assistant professor at the University of South Carolina School of the Earth\, Ocean & Environment and Department of Anthropology\n“Environmental Justice Impacts of Marine Litter and Plastic Pollution” by Juliano Calil\, senior fellow at the Center for the Blue Economy and adjunct professor at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies\n“Preparing the Prospective NOAA-Mission Workforce for a More Just Future” by Sharmini Pitter\, assistant director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Center for Coastal and Marine Ecosystems\n\nFollowing the presentations\, attendees will be invited to take part in a Q&A with the panel. Please join us at 2 p.m. on Wednesday\, March 9\, 2022 at Pollak Theater. \nEducation is the prerequisite for global development; learning with global perspectives requires us to make sense of educational systems and what global issues are happening in different parts of the world. \nAs part of this free event organized by the Monmouth University School of Education International Education Committee\, we are going to view The Price of Free by Kailash Satyarthi. This documentary movie presents Kailash Satyarthi’s global civil society movement to rescue children from slavery in India. \nThe documentary showing begins at 2 p.m. in Pollak Theater. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a World Cinema Series zoom discussion illuminating the theme “Living on the Edge: Displacement\, Identity\, and Resilience” by analyzing the message and impact of the For Sama (Syria\, 2019). \nFOR SAMA is both an intimate and epic journey into the female experience of war. A love letter from a young mother to her daughter\, the film tells the story of Waad al-Kateab’s life through five years of the uprising in Aleppo\, Syria as she falls in love\, gets married and gives birth to Sama\, all while cataclysmic conflict rises around her. \nThe film is the first feature documentary by Emmy award-winning filmmakers\, Waad al-Kateab and Edward Watts. \nThe discussion of the film will be led by  Dr. Saliba Sarsar\, professor in the department of Political Science and Dr. Sanjana Ragudaran\, Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work. \nThe film is available for streaming on a number of platforms including Vudu\, Amazon Prime Video\, YouTube\, Google Play Movies and TV\, or iTunes (for rent or purchase). \nWhen you register you will be provided the meeting link to join the conversation. Due to distanced seating in the theatre\, capacity is limited and walk-ups might not be able to be accommodated. \nSoprano Lise Davidsen makes her Live in HD debut in one of her signature roles\, the mythological Greek heroine of Strauss’s enchanting masterpiece. The outstanding cast also features mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard as the Composer of the opera-within-an-opera around which the plot revolves\, with soprano Brenda Rae as the spirited Zerbinetta and tenor Brandon Jovanovich as Ariadne’s lover\, the god Bacchus. Marek Janowski conducts.
