SUMMARY:Drones by Karina Aguilera Skvirsky
DESCRIPTION:Lecture: Feb. 2\, from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. in  Wilson Hall Auditorium \nOpening reception: Friday\, Feb. 2\, from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. \nDrones are in the news. They carry out targeted killings; they are manned with cameras to record movements on the ground; hobbyists fly them in public spaces; Amazon wants to use them to deliver their products. Appropriating visual juxtapositions from the surrealists and kitsch sic-fi invasion films\, Drones is a series of photo-collages that put flying objects into our aerial landscapes. \nThis series includes landscapes from US\, Ecuador and other unidentifiable locations. “The Drones” function like a photographic bricolage of buildings. The cut of a scissors and Photoshop suggest something crucial about Drones: their immediate extraterrestrial appearance places them in a space between reality and fiction mirroring our own abstract experience (via the Internet). \nBio: \nKarina Aguilera Skvirsky is a multi-disciplinary artist who works in photography\, video and performance. Her work has been exhibited internationally in group and solo exhibitions. In 2010 she participated in There is always a cup of sea for man to sail\, the 29th Sao Paolo Biennial (2010)\, where she exhibited work from her project\, Memories of Development. In 2015 she was awarded a Fulbright grant and a Jerome Foundation Grant to produce “The Perilous Journey of Maria Palacios”\, a performance based film that will premier in 2016 at the Cuenca Biennial\, Ecuador. Artist in Residence programs she has participated in include: Office Hours\, at El museo del barrio\, NY\, NY; LMCC Workspace\, NY\, NY; MacDowell Residency\, NH; Smackmellon\, Brooklyn\, NY and others. Skvirsky is an Associate Professor at Lafayette College\, Easton\, PA and an MFA faculty member at the The New School\, Parsons School of Design\, NY\, NY. DESCRIPTION:The Women In the World…A Visual Perspective\, art exhibit ties into the theme for Women In Media – Newark’s 8th annual Women’s History Month Film Festival\, and takes a broad look at the struggles and triumphs experienced by women globally. This exhibition\, exquisitely curated by the renowned Gladys B. Grauer\, uses the work of a socially and culturally diverse group of New Jersey based women artists to explore this seemingly simple topic. The images in this exhibit are not necessarily intended to be a literal interpretation of the theme\, rather they often offer a metaphorical relationship to the theme. With new advances in technology\, the way we consume music through our devices\, apps and on demand streaming services like Pandora\, Spotify and iTunes is making the idea of the “album” as an art form extinct. Get together with other music enthusiasts on Tuesday nights in Woods Theatre to discuss some of the greatest records of all-time! Listen to the album beforehand and then come prepared to discuss…there will be special guest moderators and panelists at each event!  \nThis discussion will feature Blondie’s Parallel Lines. DESCRIPTION:BEST OF\nTHE EAGLES (BOTE) to perform HOTEL CALIFORNIA in its entirety! \nThe BEST OF THE EAGLES (BOTE) “The Eagles Tribute Band” was established in 2012 with veteran New Jersey musicians. BOTE plays the music of The Eagles\, who have sold over 150 million albums worldwide\, drawn from their entire career which includes the Joe Walsh years. At the upcoming 2+ hour Pollak show\, BOTE will perform the Eagles mega-hit album Hotel California in it’s entirety as well as many more Eagles hits\, nuggets and fan faves. The Hotel California album sold over 32 million copies worldwide and contained such classic Eagles songs as “New Kid In Town”\, “Life In The Fast Lane”\, “Victim of Love”\, “The Last Resort” and of course “Hotel California”. \nGold Circle seating includes an after show meet and greet with refreshments.\n(Please note this is a rental event and gift certificates and ticket vouchers are not valid on this event)
