DESCRIPTION:Exhibition extended through August 18 \nPollak Gallery and outdoor locations on campus\nDocumentary Screening: May 18\, 10 AM at Wilson Hall \nMichael Malpass’ (1946-1991) artistic legacy consists of sculpture\, drawings \, collage\, paintings\, and assemblages. He is best known for his spheres\, which revitalize found industrial objects using bandsaw and traditional blacksmithing techniques. He described his sculpture\, overall\, as “a blend of artistry\, collage\, craftsmanship and movement\,” terms that could be applied to his work in other media\, as well. His vast\, stimulating and powerful body of work has established him as one of the most respected sculptors of the 20th century. \nThe opening reception will include a premiere screening of a new documentary “Michael Malpass – A Great Circle” created by Monmouth University Communication students under the direction of Erin Fleming\,\ndirector of Production Services at 7:30 pm in Pollak Theatre.

SUMMARY:J. Seward Johnson Sculptures
DESCRIPTION:Following an early career as a painter\, Seward Johnson turned his talents to the medium of sculpture. Since then\, more than 450 of Johnson’s life-size cast bronze figures have been featured in private collections and museums in the United States\, Canada\, Europe and Asia\, as well as prominent places in the public realm such as Rockefeller Center\, Pacific Place\, Hong Kong\, Les Halles in Paris\, and Via Condotti in Rome. Seward Johnson is most widely known for his sculptures depicting people engaged in every day activities. Johnson’s desire to highlight the mundane in his Celebrating the Familiar sculpture series has brought a unique voice to the world of art in public spaces. \nJohnson is often recognized for his most dramatic work — and also his largest — the 70’ aluminum giant entitled The Awakening. This sculpture was selected for the International Sculpture Conference & Exhibition and is currently sited along the Potomac River at National Harbor in Washington\, DC. This work was profiled in LIFE magazine\, Time Magazine and has become a “must see” destination in the nation’s capitol. In recent years\, Seward Johnson’s monumental scale sculptures have captured the attention of the international media and a global audience. Among these are the 26 foot tall Forever Marilyn with her skirt blowing upwards defying the stainless steel and aluminum materials. SUMMARY:Borealis Wind Quintet and The Monmouth Winds
DESCRIPTION:The\nBorealis Wind Quintet\, like the Spectacular Aurora Borealis\, displays a\nbrilliant array of sparkling color and magic in the music they perform.\nNominated for a Grammy in 2006\, they are without question the major wind\nquintet of our time. \nTheir warm yet commanding stage presence\, combined with great music\, always\ncaptivates the audience. Engaging and delightful\, the Borealis brings a fresh\nsound and an exciting program to each performance. They are recognized for\ntheir fundamental contributions to the wind quintet literature with their many\ncommissions\, recordings\, and editions of rare and traditional music. \nTheir tours have taken them to major halls throughout the U.S. including Weill\nHall (Carnegie) in New York\, the Frick Museum\, Princeton\, Notre Dame\, Wolf\nTrap\, Four Seasons in Berkeley\, Strathmore in Maryland and the Corning Museum\nin New York\, just to name a few. The Borealis recordings number five with one\nGrammy nomination. The latest\, Borealis En Salon\, is both lush and elegant. \nThe Monmouth Winds\, formed in 2009\, features five\nmusicians from the Garden State: Jenny Cline\, flute; Nicholas Gatto\, oboe;\nRichard Grossman\, clarinet; Richard Sachs\, horn; and Linda Balavram\, bassoon.\nThey have been steadily building a following\, delighting audiences in the\ntri-state area with their entertaining performances of eclectic\nrepertoire.  Lately they have been busy commissioning new works for their\nensemble\, including works by Jeffrey Scott\, Gary Schocker\, Daniel Dorff\, David\nEvan Thomas and Laurence Dresner.  They have performed at the 2013 (New\nOrleans) and 2015 (Washington\, D.C.) National Flute Association conventions\,\nand they will be premiering their next commission\, a work by Eric Ewazen\, at\nthe Juilliard School this fall.

DESCRIPTION:Reception: Monday\, April 11 | 4:30- 6 PM | Library Seminar Room 102\nGallery Hours: Tues. – Thurs.: 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.\, Friday: 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.\, Saturday: 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.\, Sunday: 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. \nBorn in Philadelphia in 1917\, Jacob Landau launched his career as an illustrator\, winning national prizes at age 16 and a scholarship to the Philadelphia College of Art. He had over sixty one-person shows and was the recipient of many awards\, including Tiffany\, Guggenheim and National Arts Council grants. Many of his works are featured in permanent collections in the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York\, among others. A master teacher\, he retired as professor emeritus at New York’s Pratt Institute. In 1996\, he was awarded an honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts by Monmouth University. \nJacob Landau viewed art as a defense against chaos. That all is subject to entropy haunted the artist his whole life. So art becomes a weapon to combat this descent into disorder. And it is a powerful weapon. For “each time we create something\,” Landau has said\, “we win a victory over decay.” Monmouth University’s exhibit “Order & Chaos” demonstrates this triumph. The exhibition features a selection of fifteen pieces. All works are from Monmouth University’s extensive collection of Jacob Landau’s work\, comprising over 300 prints\, drawings and paintings. The collection was gifted to Monmouth University in 2008 by the Jacob Landau Institute of Roosevelt\, NJ. This exhibit is co-sponsored by the Jewish Culture Studies Program and the Honors School of Monmouth University. \nThis event is free & open to the public. SUMMARY:On Screen In Person: Deaf Jam
DESCRIPTION:Illuminating the extraordinary power of American Sign Language (ASL) poetry\, Deaf Jam is story of Aneta Brodski’s bold journey into the spoken word slam scene. When Aneta\, a deaf Israeli immigrant high school student\, makes an extraordinary connection with a hearing Palestinian slam poet\, they transcend personal and political divisions to generate a new form of poetry that speaks to both the hearing and the deaf.  \nJudy Lieff is a filmmaker and educator with a background in dance and experimental film. She participated in the American Film Showcase 2013/2014 program with her first feature documentary\, Deaf Jam\, traveling to South Korea\, Zimbabwe\, and Turkey.  Judy won a finishing grant from ITVS for the film. She is on faculty at SUNY Purchase teaching film production that explores the intersections of film and dance. Judy earned her M.F.A. in dance & experimental film/video from the California Institute of the Arts (Cal Arts)\, following a career as a professional dancer. Her credits include: a Dance On Camera residency with BBC producer Bob Lockyer at the Banff Centre for the Arts\, a National Dance/Media fellowship from the Pew Charitable Trusts\, and six grants for media projects with youth. Judy has years of experience working in production and post-production on commercials\, industrials\, shorts\, and EPKs for feature films. Additionally\, she has worked as a motion capture performer/choreographer\, and as a stop-motion performer/choreographer on projects including Terry Gilliam’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Pat O’Neil’s The Decay of Fiction.There will be a Q&A with director Judy Lieff following the screening. \nOn Screen/In Person is made possible by Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation through the generous support of the National Endowment for the Arts’ Regional Touring Program.

SUMMARY:Robert Bly: A Thousand Years of Joy
DESCRIPTION:Director/ Producer: Haydn Reiss  \nBeginning in 1994\, Reiss has made a series of documentaries on writers and poets\, including William Stafford & Robert Bly: A Literary Friendship and the award-winning Rumi: Poet of the Heart\, which was narrated by Debra Winger. Both films aired on PBS. \nIn 2005\, Reiss produced\, How Democrats and Progressives Can Win: Solutions from George Lakoff’ Professor Lakoff\, a noted expert in linguistics and political language\, is showcased in a tightly knit program that explains how modern politics is waged through ideas like “framing” the debate\, the way a party’s “values” influence voters and much more. At that time only the political right had made use of these cognitive techniques to gain political power and the film was made in response to that imbalance. \nReiss’ 2009 film\, Every War Has Two Losers\, a look at poet William Stafford’s years as a conscientious objector\, was a 2011 winner at the Canadian International Film Festival and an official selection of the 2011 United National Film Festival.  \n2015 brought the completion of Robert Bly: A Thousand Years of Joy\, the first feature documentary profile of the prolific and controversial poet and activist. Featuring Martin Sheen\, Gary Snyder Mark Rylance\, Jane Hirshfield\, Philip Levine and many others from the world of art and literature. It is set for a PBS broadcast next year.  \nIn a previous life Haydn worked as  assistant on the psychological thriller Jacob Ladder and as assistant to the producer Alex Ho on Oliver Stone’s JFK. \nMr. Reiss has been awarded grants from the National Endowment for the Arts\, Minnesota Film & TV\, the Nathan Cummings Foundation\, the Lannan Foundation\, the Witter Bynner Foundation for Poetry\, the Westcliff Foundation and others. \nThere will be a Q&A with the filmmaker\, Haydn Reiss\, following the screening. This event is sponsored by the Visiting Writers Series and Jewish Cultural Studies.

DESCRIPTION:Following the hugely successful broadcasts of Coriolanus and King Lear\, National Theatre Live brings the Donmar Warehouse’s highly anticipated new production of Les Liaisons Dangereuses to cinemas – broadcast live from the Donmar’s London home. \nDirected by Josie Rourke (Coriolanus)\, the cast includes Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey)\, Janet McTeer (The White Queen) and Dominic West (The Wire). \nIn 1782\, Choderlos de Laclos’ novel of sex\, intrigue and betrayal in pre-revolutionary France scandalised the world. Two hundred years later\, Christopher Hampton’s irresistible adaptation swept the board\, winning the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Play. Josie Rourke’s revival now marks the play’s thirty year anniversary. \nFormer lovers\, the Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont now compete in games of seduction and revenge. Merteuil incites Valmont to corrupt the innocent Cecile de Volanges before her wedding night but Valmont has targeted the peerlessly virtuous and beautiful Madame de Tourvel. While these merciless aristocrats toy with others’ hearts and reputations\, their own may prove more fragile than they supposed.
