DESCRIPTION:Lewis Mumford\nSelections from the Monmouth University Permanent Collection\nThe Dimattio Gallery – Upper Level\nLewis Mumford\, a dynamic writer\, literary and architectural critic\, moralist\, historian and philosopher. Born in Flushing\, NY\, on October 19\, 1895\, Mumford’s extensive contributions to literary scholarship\, technology\, urban planning\, and architecture are internationally renowned for their uncanny social vision and their timely prescience. Lewis Mumford criticized progress based on the intoxicating power of technology and the machine. He argued that the advancement of civilization should be cultivated by humanism\, and that technology should never be used to acquire global domination\, promote military prowess\, or erode individualism. \nLewis Mumford\, however\, was no pacifist—he despised fascism and urged America to fight in both World Wars. Like George Orwell\, he often accused his liberal contemporaries of being corrupt\, and claimed that their “willingness to submit to the Nazis rather than risk the need for using force in opposing them” was nothing short of egregious. \nHis many prestigious awards include the Medal of Freedom from President Lyndon Johnson\, the Presidential Medal of Art and Citation from Ronald Reagan\, and the Knight of the British Empire (K.B.E)\, an honor bestowed on him by Queen Elizabeth II. Performing in tutus\, tiaras and tights\, this all-male ballet company specializes in hilarious twists on the classics such as Swan Lake and Giselle\, with equal parts comedy and technical prowess. Devoted fans and newcomers alike will be awed and delighted by the company’s loving knowledge of dance\, comic approach\, and the astounding fact that men can\, indeed\, dance en pointe without falling flat on their faces. \nPost-Show Conversation with the Dancers: Following the performance there will be a Q&A session with the company members.

Woods Theatre \nSpring Musical Little Shop of HorrorsMarch 5-8 & 11-13 at 8 p.m. March 9 at 3 p.m. (This performance is SOLD OUT) \nLittle Shop of Horrors\, the story of a hapless florist shop worker who raises a plant from outer space that feeds on human blood\, has become a comedy classic since its origins as a sci-fi “B” movie in the 50s\, an off-Broadway hit in the 80s and a hit film in 1986. With a book by Howard Ashman\, the music by composer Alan Menken (also the composer of the current Broadway hit Newsies and the Disney film The Little Mermaid) includes several well-known tunes\, including the title song\, “Somewhere That’s Green”\, and “Suddenly\, Seymour”. \nPresented by special arrangement with Music Theatre International

DESCRIPTION:Jennifer Levonian creates animations and paintings in Philadelphia\, PA. Her work has been screened and exhibited across the United States\, including at the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the National Museum for Women in the Arts and the National Portrait Gallery\, Washington\, D.C. In 2009\, she was awarded a Pew Fellowship in the Arts. In addition to delivering an artist lecture and screening a few of her short films\, Jennifer will lead a workshop on stop motion animation.

DESCRIPTION:National Theatre Live’s 2010 broadcast of Frankenstein returns to\ncinemas as part of the National Theatre’s 50th anniversary celebrations. \nFrankenstein\n enjoyed a sell-out run at the National Theatre\, and went on to win\nawards including the 2012 Olivier Award for Best Actor for Benedict\nCumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller.  \nOscar-winner Danny Boyle\n(Trainspotting\, Slumdog Millionaire) directs a sensational production.\nIn this encore screening Benedict Cumberbatch (Star Trek: Into Darkness\,\n BBC’s Sherlock) plays Dr. Frankenstein and Jonny Lee Miller\n(Trainspotting\, CBS’s Elementary) his creation.  \nChildlike in his\ninnocence but grotesque in form\, Frankenstein’s bewildered creature is\ncast out into a hostile universe by his horror-struck maker. Meeting\nwith cruelty wherever he goes\, the friendless Creature\, increasingly\ndesperate and vengeful\, determines to track down his creator and strike a\n terrifying deal. Urgent concerns of scientific responsibility\, parental\n neglect\, cognitive development\, and the nature of good and evil are\nembedded within this thrilling and deeply disturbing classic gothic\ntale.  \nTickets for the Feb. 13 performance that was cancelled will be accepted for this screening.
