SUMMARY:Student Movie Posters from the Department of Art & Design
DESCRIPTION:2nd Floor\, Rechnitz Hall \nWhat can you do with 4 colors\, 4 names\, 2 locations\, 2 dates\, 2 films genres and 4 adjectives?\n\nFor this project\, students are asked to create a concept for a movie poster for a film that does not exist. As a point of departure\, students are asked to type up a list of colors\, locations\, names\, dates\, adjectives\, and film genres. These words are then cut and distributed (via the nearest baseball hat). This compilation of information is then used as the catalyst for the story. From this exercise\, students write a summary of the movie including plot line and character development. Once the story concept is discussed and approved\, each student begins a visual journey resulting in the work displayed here on the gallery walls.\n\nCoursework from:\n\nAR374 Digital Imaging: Fall 2011\, Spring 2012\, Fall 2012\nProfessors Bright and Cresson

SUMMARY:The Civil War
DESCRIPTION:Over one hundred and fifty years ago\, the United States of America split in half as the north and south waged war against each other over preserving a way of life versus preserving the union. While decisions made by Abraham Lincoln\, Robert E. Lee\, and General Sherman affected the course of American history\, ordinary Americans carried out these orders\, and often made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. The Civil War was a defining moment in American History – the fire of war burned away the scourge of slavery and\, in time\, melded the separate states into a true nation. In telling the tale of this large and complex event\, this Theatreworks show focuses on the smaller stories of some of the soldiers who are caught up in it\, including\, Zak\, a runaway slave who demands the right to fight his own fight; Will\, his former best friend and “master;” Johnny\, an Irish immigrant who volunteers to defend his new home; and Jackie\, a girl who becomes a drummer boy. \nWritten by the playwright behind Theatreworks USA’s The Great Railroad Race\, Footprints on the Moon\, and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn\, this stirring production features traditional songs of the era while sensitively illustrating this complex\, tumultuous chapter of American history. The Civil War illuminates the humanity and sacrifices of those who fought\, and the many who died. \nAppropriate for Grades 3 – 9

SUMMARY:John Hammond with Billy Hector
DESCRIPTION:As musical pedigrees go\, they don’t come much more awesome\nthan being the son of legendary record man and activist John H. Hammond — the\nsame Hammond who’s credited with discovering everyone from Basie to Billie\nHolliday\, Bob Dylan to the Boss. That said\, John Paul Hammond has indisputably\nforged a name for himself as a master blues guitarist — a Grammy winning purist\nwhose recording career of 50-plus years attests to his laserlike focus and disdain\nof musical fad or fashion\, even as he’s racked up successful collaborations\nwith the likes of Tom Waits\, Dr. John\, Duane Allman\, Robbie Robertson\, and G.\nLove. \nWith acoustic blues having been rediscovered — as it has\nbeen every so often\, by a new generation of fans — Hammond stands uniquely\npoised to “show them how it’s done” when he takes the stage of the Pollak\nTheatre\, a room that’s been praised as a premier venue for acoustic guitarists.\nThe Blues Hall of Famer who once boasted both Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix in his band remains an artist with impeccable\ntaste in music\, his instrument\, and the audience he plays to.  \nOpening the show will be local living legend and award-winning blues guitarist and songwriter Billy Hector. \nMore info: www.johnhammond.com or www.billyhector.com \nCost: $30
