SUMMARY:Aftermath Series - Joel Meyerowitz
DESCRIPTION:February 4 – March 22\, 2013\nPollak Gallery\nFree & Open to Public\nAfter September 11th\, 2001\, the Ground Zero site in New York City was classified as a crime scene and only those directly involved in the recovery efforts were allowed inside. The press was also prohibited from the site\, but with the help of the Museum of the City of New York and sympathetic city officials\, award-winning photographer Joel Meyerowitz managed to obtain unlimited access. By ingenuity and sheer determination\, he was the only photographer granted unimpeded right of entry into Ground Zero. For 9 months\, during the day and night\, Meyerowitz photographed “the pile\,” as the World Trade Center came to be known\, and the over 800 people a day that were working in it. Influenced by Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange’s work for the Farm Security Administration during the Great Depression\, he knew that if he didn’t make a photographic record of the unprecedented recovery efforts\, “there would be no history.” \nSelected Works from the Joel Meyerowitz Aftermath Series is made possible by the generous gifts from: Mr. and Mrs. Simon Levin\, Mr. and Mrs. Steven Gross\, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Zucker\, Mr. Jeffrey H. Newman

SUMMARY:Student Movie Posters from the Department of Art & Design
DESCRIPTION:2nd Floor\, Rechnitz Hall \nWhat can you do with 4 colors\, 4 names\, 2 locations\, 2 dates\, 2 films genres and 4 adjectives?\n\nFor this project\, students are asked to create a concept for a movie poster for a film that does not exist. As a point of departure\, students are asked to type up a list of colors\, locations\, names\, dates\, adjectives\, and film genres. These words are then cut and distributed (via the nearest baseball hat). This compilation of information is then used as the catalyst for the story. From this exercise\, students write a summary of the movie including plot line and character development. Once the story concept is discussed and approved\, each student begins a visual journey resulting in the work displayed here on the gallery walls.\n\nCoursework from:\n\nAR374 Digital Imaging: Fall 2011\, Spring 2012\, Fall 2012\nProfessors Bright and Cresson

SUMMARY:Shawn Mullins and Mindy Smith
DESCRIPTION:Grammy\nnominated singer songwriter Shawn Mullins has undergone a series of\ntransformative experiences leading to his eleventh studio release\, Light You Up.\nHis experiences included delving into the collaborative creative\nprocess by intensive co-writing\, and in one instance putting him atop of\nthe country charts via a key contribution to the Zac Brown Band’s\n“Toes\,” marking his fourth #1 single\, following 1999’s “Lullaby” and the\n2006 Triple A/Americana chart-topper “Beautiful Wreck.” \nThe world got its first introduction to Mindy Smith nearly a decade ago\,\nwhen she won over Dolly Parton lovers with an elegantly pleading cover\nof “Jolene\,” then promptly added to their number fans of wide-ranging\nAmericana\, connoisseurs of confessional songcraft\, appreciators of\nmature pop melodicism and seekers of spiritual heft with her Vanguard\nRecords debut One Moment More and the three albums that followed.

SUMMARY:Tommy Sands
DESCRIPTION:Location: Wilson Hall \nVersailles Room in Wilson HallCost: $25 \nTommy Sands\, County Down’s singer\, songwriter and social activist\,\nhas achieved something akin to legendary status in his own lifetime.\nFrom the pioneering tours with the highly influential Sands Family\,\nplaying Carnegie Hall to Moscow’s Olympic Stadium\, he has become one of\nIreland’s most powerful songwriters and enchanting performers. He enjoys\n celebrity status in many parts of the world\, tempered by artistic\nintegrity and the sorrow of personal tragedy in his war-torn homeland.\nWalking the road between two cultures\, he dreams of an Ireland without\nconflict. Indeed\, his songs speak to all that Ireland is\, from its\ntroubled past to its indomitable spirit and a vision of “a land of\ndreaming.” And his work around the globe speaks to our common heritage\,\nusing music to bridge cultural differences. In this way he shares a\nvision with songwriters instigating social change\, such as Phil Ochs\,\nJoan Baez\, and close friend Pete Seeger. \nPresented in conjunction with the Irish Studies Program \nMore info: www.tommysands.com

SUMMARY:Justin Townes Earle with special guest Tift Merrit
DESCRIPTION:Family dynasties in country music are surely nothing new —\nbut just as surely as Steve Earle has blazed a trail of bracingly honest\nsongcraft and life experience that could never be conjured by a Music Row\npublicist\, so too has Justin Townes Earle fought on the frontlines of\nalt-country\, Americana and those no-man’s-lands between the relative safety of\nthe stylistic pigeonholes. \nNamed for iconic rebel Townes Van Zandt; born in Nashville\n(but never necessarily of it)\, Justin Townes Earle nonetheless has style to\nspare — a sensibility that’s landed him on GQ’s list of “style stars\,” and\nthat’s made him every lanky inch the stranger at large in the wilds of New York\nCity. As many thousands of fans also realize\, JTE backs up that easy style with\nsome hard skills — a beyond-his-years musical wisdom and a guitar/vocal\ntechnique that’s allowed him to wow audiences variously characterized as\n“bluegrass\,” “Americana\,” “blues\,” “folk” and “alternative.” Touring behind his\n2012 Bloodshot Records release Nothing’s\nGonna Change the Way You Feel About Me Now\, Earle returns to Monmouth\nCounty for his first area theater show\, on the Pollak stage at Monmouth. Opening for JTE will be soulful singer-songwriter Tift Merritt. \n*This concert has been rescheduled from the original November 4\, 2012 date \n www.justintownesearle.com
