SUMMARY:Jacob Landau: The Frances Cycle 
DESCRIPTION:Monmouth University Galleries opens an art exhibition that features the important series of drawings: The Frances Cycle\, created by the American artist\, humanist\, and teacher Jacob Landau. \nReception: Monday\, April 1\, 2024\, 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.  \nBorn in Philadelphia in 1917\, Landau launched his career as an illustrator\, winning national prizes at age 16 and a scholarship to the Philadelphia College of Art. He went on to have over sixty one-person shows\, featuring a wide range of drawings and paintings. The recipient of numerous awards\, including Guggenheim and National Arts Council grants\, many of his works are featured in permanent collections\, such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. A master teacher\, he retired as professor emeritus at New York’s Pratt Institute. In 1996\, he was awarded an honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts by Monmouth University. \nThe exhibition features the important series of drawings\, The Frances Cycle\, in dedication to his wife that died from Alzheimer’s disease. In 1999\, Landau finished a limited-edition book\, The Frances Cycle: Some Motions of the Earth.  He used his own art and the poetry of\, former President of the Jacob Landau Institute\, and writer/poet\, David Herrstrom\, to give voice to the words his wife spoke as she dealt with the effects of Alzheimer’s disease.  The completes series (14)\, and books\, are all from Monmouth University’s extensive collection of Jacob Landau’s work\, comprising over 300 prints\, drawings\, and paintings. The collection was gifted to Monmouth University in 2008 by the Jacob Landau Institute of Roosevelt\, NJ.

DESCRIPTION:Hernan Diaz is the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of two novels translated into thirty-four languages. He is the recipient of the John Updike award from the American Academy of Arts & Letters\, given to “a writer whose contributions to American literature have demonstrated consistent excellence.” \nHis first novel\, In the Distance\, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the PEN/Faulkner Award\, and it was the winner of the Saroyan International Prize\, the Cabell Award\, the Prix Page America\, and the New American Voices Award\, among other distinctions. It was also a Publishers Weekly Top 10 Book of the Year and one of Lit Hub’s 20 Best Novels of the Decade. \nTrust\, his second novel\, received the Pulitzer Prize for fiction and was a New York Times bestseller\, the winner of the Kirkus Prize\, and longlisted for the Booker Prize\, among other nominations. It was listed as a best book of the year by over thirty publications and named one of the 10 Best Books of the Year by The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, NPR\, and Time magazine\, and it was one of The New Yorker’s 12 Essential Reads of the Year. One of Barack Obama’s Favorite Books of 2022\, Trust is currently being developed as a limited series for HBO. \nHernan Diaz’s stories and essays have appeared in The Paris Review\, Harper’s\, The Atlantic\, Granta\, The Yale Review\, Playboy\, McSweeney’s\, and elsewhere. He has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship\, a Whiting Award\, and fellowships from the New York Public Library’s Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers\, and The Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center. \nDiaz holds a PhD from NYU\, edits an academic journal at Columbia University\, and is also the author of Borges\, between History and Eternity.

DESCRIPTION:Experience an extraordinary evening where art and music intertwine in a one-night-only concert featuring the brightest female singer-songwriters of the Jersey Shore\, drawing inspiration from the captivating artworks of Nanci France-Vaz. Christine Elise\, Pam McCoy\, Mary McCrink\, Laura Johnson\, and Genevieve are among those featured in Vaz’s narrative figure paintings on exhibition this spring in the Pollak Gallery. These talented artists step out of the canvases to perform live in an evening celebrating female artistry and inspiration. \nThis concert is in conjunction with the opening reception for the gallery exhibition Metamorphosis: Works by Nanci France-Vaz on April 26 from 6-8 pm. The opening reception is FREE to the public\, however tickets are required to attend the concert.

SUMMARY:The Beatles’ A Hard Day's Night: A Retrospective
DESCRIPTION:Class Schedule: April 30 and May 2 | 7:30 – 9:00 PM \nThis summer marks 60 years since the release of the Beatles’ first and best feature film\, A Hard Day’s Night. Through interview clips\, video and pictures\, this 2-session virtual course taught by Scott McLaren will chronicle the Beatles’ rise to success in their hometown of Liverpool\, the explosion of Beatlemania across Britain in 1963\, their subsequent conquering of the US in early 1964\, all leading to their critically acclaimed first film and soundtrack. We’ll see clips from those who were involved in the film including United Artists executives\, the film Producer\, Director\, the Beatles and others within their inner circle. Lastly\, we’ll discuss and listen to song excerpts from the exclusively Lennon-McCartney soundtrack. As most things Beatles\, A Hard Day’s Night remains infectious\, lasting and fun. \nZoom Link will be provided upon registration.

SUMMARY:Joan Osborne + Crash Test Dummies
DESCRIPTION:Two incredible artists\, each performing their own set! Since she broke through over 25 years ago with the multi-platinum Relish and its touchstone mega-smash “One of Us\,” Joan Osborne the seven-time Grammy nominee has never played it safe. Osborne has followed her restless musical heart\, exploring a diverse range of genres: pop rock\, soul\, R&B\, blues\, roots rock\, gospel\, funk\, and country – all of which can be heard on her latest album Trouble and Strife\, along with the Western side of C&W and a touch of glam and disco. “For a lot of the record\, we were going for a ‘70s AM radio vibe\,” says Osborne. As for the lyrics\, the songs “are the most political I’ve ever written\,” she conveys of her first album of originals since 2014’s confessional Love and Hate. Osborne also produced Trouble and Strife\, primarily recorded in her basement studio in Brooklyn and released on the label she founded in 1991\, Womanly Hips. \n \n\nIn 2018\, 25 years after the release of their multi-Grammy nominated hit album “God Shuffled His Feet”\, The Crash Test Dummies hit the road for the first 8me in 20 years with an Anniversary Tour that spanned North America. The overwhelming recep8on led to a 30th Anniversary Tour in 2022 for their debut release “The Ghosts That Haunt Me” that touched down in the US\, UK\, Germany\, Austria\, the Netherlands\, Luxembourg\, and Canada. And the band is showing no signs of slowing down . . . \n“Touring again was not something we’d planned on\, but surprisingly – at least to me – there are lots of people who many years later\, s8ll want to come and hear us. The folks that are coming out to see these shows tell us their stories\, some of them very funny\, some very dark and all very personal. It’s very humbling\, being in the confidence of so many people” says lead singer-songwriter Brad Roberts\, “and it has inspired us to con8nue to tour and make music.” \nEarly 2023 will see the release a new\, original Crash Test Dummies single “Sacred Alphabet“ as they again hit the road in North America and Europe. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
