DESCRIPTION:Jean Valentine was born in Chicago\, earned her B.A. from Radcliffe College\, and lived most of her life in New York City. She won the Yale Younger Poets Award for her first book\, Dream Barker and Other Poems\, in 1965. Valentine authored over a dozen collections of poetry including\,The River at Wolf (1992); Door in the Mountain: New and Collected Poems\, 1965-2003 (2007); Break the Glass (2010); and Shirt in Heaven (2015). DESCRIPTION:ALICIA OSTRIKER has published 19 collections of poetry\, been twice nominated for the National Book Award\, and has twice received the National Jewish Book Award for Poetry\, among other honors. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker\, The Yale Review\, American Poetry Review\, Best American Poetry \, The Atlantic \, Prairie Schooner\, and other journals\, and has been translated into numerous languages including Hebrew and Arabic. Her most recent collections of poems are Waiting for the Light and The Volcano and After:Selected and New Poems 2002 – 2019 . She was New York State Poet Laureate for 2018 – 2021 and a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets in 2015 – 2020. \nJOAN LARKIN is the author of five previous collections of poetry\, including Blue Hanuman (2014); My Body: New and Selected Poems (2007)\, which received the Audre Lorde Award from the Publishing Triangle; Lambda Literary Award winner Cold River (1997); and Housework (1975). With Jaime Manrique\, Larkin translated Sor Juana’ s Love Poems\, a bilingual edition of Sor Juana Inez de la Cruz’ s poetry (1997). Her prose works include I f You Want What We Have: Sponsorship Meditations (1998) and Glad Day: Daily Meditations for Gay\, Lesbian\, Bisexual\, and Transgender People (1998). DESCRIPTION:Race and the Freedom to Learn\nCosponsored by the William Monroe Trotter Institute for the Study of Black Culture at UMass Boston \nLocation: Monmouth University Campus \nThe freedom to learn has been inextricably linked to race across time and space. From the era of enslavement in the Americas to book burning in Nazi Germany down to the present humans around the globe have demanded the freedom to learn as a fundamental human right. This right to learn is intrinsically linked to race\, gender\, sexuality\, and class -the denial of which diminishes society while threatening democracy. Denying groups and individuals the right to learn impacts everyone in society and oftentimes involves the censoring of curriculum\, arrest of educators\, and book banning or book burning. The freedom to learn has been particularly denied to marginalized communities including people of color\, women\, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community. \nIn November 2024\, the International Interdisciplinary Conference on Race will focus on “Race and the Freedom to Learn” and invites papers from a range of disciplines\, including history\, anthropology\, education\, gender studies\, ethnic studies\, sociology\, and other disciplines that have grappled with this subject. We welcome individual papers or complete panels from scholars\, educators\, artists\, and activists whose work is related to race\, its intersections\, and the freedom to learn in history\, society\, and culture. We also seek papers from international scholars and offer a few travel stipends to scholars traveling from abroad to attend the conference.

DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, Nov. 9\, 2024 \n10 a.m. to 2 p.m. \nGiving back to those who need help is what the Big Event is all about. \nThe Big Event is the single largest community service project that takes place at Monmouth University every year. Every fall\, approximately 200 to 400 members of the Monmouth University community sign up to be a volunteer at one of the 10 to 25 Big Event work sites in the towns that surround campus. \nThe Big Event has become somewhat of a national phenomenon at a number of colleges and universities throughout the United States. It originated at Texas A&M University in 1982 when 6 students felt the need to give something back to the communities of College Station and Bryan Texas. \nDuring the Spring 2000 semester\, members of Monmouth University’s Student Government Association attended the Conference of Student Government Associations (COSGA) at Texas A&M where our Senators learned all about the Big Event. They decided it was a program that should be brought back to the Monmouth community. \nTwenty four years later\, the Monmouth University Big Event has become a signature program for SGA. The Big Event is held in fall and anyone affiliated with Monmouth University is encouraged to become a Big Event volunteer. DESCRIPTION:Leonard Bernstein\, renowned for his dynamic conducting and compositions like “West Side Story\,” remains a towering figure in 20th-century music. Explore the fascinating intersection of Bernstein’s genius and the mind with Dr. Richard Kogan in a TED-like lecture and piano performance. Trained at Juilliard in piano and Harvard Medical School in psychiatry\, Dr. Kogan\, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Artistic Director of the Music and Medicine program at Weill Cornell Medical Center\, offers a unique perspective. \nRichard Kogan’s concert lecture audiences hear him recount Bernstein’s life “from his first cigarette to his last dying day”\, interspersing oral history and anecdote with performances of “Somewhere”\, “Maria”\, “Tonight”\, “One Hand\, One Heart”\, “America” and more. DESCRIPTION:This fall the DiMattio Gallery is hosting I Wish That I Had Spoken Only of It All\, an exhibition of Sheryl Oring’s social practice project I Wish to Say and related works. Part of our programming will be a teach-in series from MU faculty about topics related to themes that intersect with Oring’s project as art reaches across disciplinary bounds. These teach-ins will be free and open to the public. \nSince 2004\, Oring has traveled with her typewriter to different public spaces and colleges and universities\, asking community members to dictate and mail postcards to the US President. To date\, she has typed over 4241 postcards in her attempt to use art as a catalyst for social change.
