DESCRIPTION:Racial Healing: Practical Activities to Help You Explore Racial Privilege\, Confront Systemic Racism\, and Engage in Collective Healing \nIn this session\, Anneliese Singh describes core racial healing strategies that people can practice in the aim of collective racial justice and liberation. In doing so\, Singh invites people to explore their own racial healing so they can build stronger relationships across multiple races/ethnicities to identify and transform structural racism within institutional settings. \nAnneliese Singh\, Ph.D.\, LPC (she/they) is a professor and chief diversity officer/associate provost for Diversity and Faculty Development at Tulane University. Her scholarship and community organizing explores the resilience\, trauma\, and identity development experiences of queer and trans people\, with a focus on young people and BIPOC people. Anneliese is the author of “The Racial Healing Handbook: Practical Activities to Help You Challenge Privilege\, Confront Systemic Racism\, and Engage in Collective Healing” and “The Queer and Trans Resilience Workbook.” Anneliese is co-founder of the Georgia Safe Schools Coalition and the Trans Resilience Project. DESCRIPTION:Tickets will go on sale for this event Monday\, December 18\, at 12 p.m. \nBruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music Presents Symposium to Celebrate the 60th Anniversary of The Beatles’ Arrival in America \nThe Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music at Monmouth University will present a symposium on Saturday\, February 3\, 2024 that celebrates the arrival of the Beatles in America sixty years ago. Titled Get Back…To 1964\, the day-long event will include panel discussions\, interviews\, book signings\, and musical performances of early Beatles’ songs performed by regional musicians. \nParticipants in the symposium include Beatles’ authors Ken Womack (Living the Beatles Legend) Bruce Spizer (The Beatles Please Please Me); radio personalities Dennis Elsas (WFUV and Sirius) and Tom Frangione (Sirius); and musician Jim Babjak (Smithereens). \n“The arrival of The Beatles in February 1964 profoundly changed the course of American music\,” said Bob Santelli\, Executive Director of the Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music. “They inspired musicians here from New York to San Francisco and brought to rock & roll brand new ideas as to how the music could be made.” \n“The Beatles transformed American music\, fashion and culture. Their mop-top hair styles\, Beatle boots and mod clothing became an overnight obsession in the 1960’s”\, said Eileen Chapman\, Director of the Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music. “They encouraged the younger generation to take a deeper look at what was happening in the world.” \nThe symposium\, which is open to the public\, will be held in the auditorium of Monmouth University’s historic Great Hall.\nTickets are $64 and will go on sale Monday\, December 18\, at noon at the Monmouth University Box Office in the Ocean First Bank Center and online here. \n

DESCRIPTION:Presenting the Reunion Tour of “On A Winter’s Night” from veteran singer-songwriters PATTY LARKIN\, CLIFF EBERHARDT\, JOHN GORKA  and LUCY KAPLANSKY\, that remain among the brightest stars of the singer/songwriter movement for the past three decades. In 1994 Christine Lavin gathered them together\, along with folk and Americana artists to showcase music of the Winter Season on the now-classic On A Winter’s Night CD\, followed by several years of touring collaborations. These artists have released dozens of recordings and toured steadily through the decades\, with fond memories of their touring days together. The winter season is again celebrated by these unique and popular performers\, back together by popular demand. \n***It is the artists’ preference that audience members be masked for this show for everyone’s health and safety.*** \nPATTY LARKIN\nShe redefines the boundaries of folk-urban pop music with her inventive guitar wizardry and uncompromising lyrics and vocals. Recently an Artist-in-Residence at Berklee College of Music – and now on the faculty at Fine Arts Work Center – Larkin reflects\, “I have been energized by the poets\, writers\, and artists I have met while teaching\, and find myself on a journey to break down some of the predictable pathways that songs can travel.” Bird in a Cage\, her 14th CD now available\, puts poems from ten notable poets to song\, including US Poet Laureates William Carlos Williams\, Stanley Kunitz\, Kay Ryan\, Robert Pinsky\, and Billy Collins\, for a new and haunting collection that pulses with the magic of lyricism. Poems are made to be shared aloud\, and with Bird\, Patty takes up that tradition and sets it aglow. \nCLIFF EBERHARDT\nOne of the most original songsmiths currently on tour\, Eberhardt is a highly intelligent\, articulate artist whose penetrating and profound lyrics are sometimes overshadowed by his extraordinary guitar playing. Upon close listening\, the Philadelphia-born singer’s gift for the English language is abundantly clear. The words that tumble from his mouth are framed by a raspy yet deeply elegant voice. Originally from New Jersey\, John served an apprenticeship at Godfrey Daniels coffeehouse in Bethlehem\, PA\, then the Greenwich Village Fast Folk scene. Winning the prestigious New Folk award at the Kerrville Folk Festival\, in 1984\, he was then signed to Red House Records on which he released his landmark first of 17 recordings\, I Know. Boston Globe penned Gorka “for the sophisticated intelligence and the provocative originality of his songs.” Recent accolades include 2016’s Indie Acoustic Project’s Best Singer/Songwriter CD of the Year for Before Beginning (Red House Records). 2018 brought his latest release\, and 14th of his career\, True In Time (Compass Records). This two-session virtual course taught by David Hamilton Golland dispels rehashed myths and also shows how race and class in popular music contributed to their breakout success. As the economy collapsed and as people abandoned the spirit of Woodstock in the late 70s\, Journey used the rhythm of soul and Motown to inspire hope in primarily white teenagers’ lives. Decades later\, the band and their signature song remain classics\, and now\, with singer Arnel Pineda\, they are again a fixture in major stadiums worldwide. \nDavid Hamilton Golland is a historian\, professor\, and writer with a wide background in twentieth-century social and cultural history. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation between artist Pussy Noir and curator and gallery director Victoria Reis. They will talk about the specific collaborations they have undertaken together as well the broader importance of collaboration to their professional and creative practices. \nAn ArtNOW and 2024 Intercultural Center Black History Month Event \nJason Barnes (Pussy Noir) was born and raised in the Washington\, D.C.\, area and grew up in its theaters and rehearsal halls. At 18\, diving headfirst into the New York entertainment industry\, Barnes began with styling photoshoots and working backstage at fashion shows. He spent some time in Paris\, enchanted by the European fashion and art scenes\, and is influenced by the time to this day. \nMixing his background in music\, theater\, art\, and fashion\, the Pussy Noir character developed into an androgynous entity within the nightclub circuit; later\, museums and galleries around the city. A popular act in the D.C. region\, Barnes continues to culture his brand by giving the audience exuberant energy during performances and providing a gender-queer imagery inviting the audience to have a full sensory experience during their/his performances. Barnes has made appearances and performed in many groundbreaking shows and events. Since 2006\, Reis has been leading Transformer as its Executive & Artistic Director\, curating and presenting substantial exhibitions and programs in support of emerging artists\, innovative cultural production\, and new & best practices within contemporary visual art. Reis has established comprehensive cultural partnerships & collaborations with an extensive range of arts\, educational\, and diplomatic organizations and institutions. She has launched and advanced the careers of several hundred artists. \nIn May 2017\, Reis expanded Transformer’s programming to include Siren Arts\, an Asbury Park-based summer residency program for emerging visual artists working within the performance art discipline. This two-session virtual course taught by David Hamilton Golland dispels rehashed myths and also shows how race and class in popular music contributed to their breakout success. As the economy collapsed and as people abandoned the spirit of Woodstock in the late 70s\, Journey used the rhythm of soul and Motown to inspire hope in primarily white teenagers’ lives. Decades later\, the band and their signature song remain classics\, and now\, with singer Arnel Pineda\, they are again a fixture in major stadiums worldwide. \nDavid Hamilton Golland is a historian\, professor\, and writer with a wide background in twentieth-century social and cultural history.
