DESCRIPTION:Hugh\nMasekela\, a world-renowned flugelhornist\, trumpeter\, bandleader\, composer\,\nsinger\, and defiant political voice\, combines his talents with powerhouse pianist\nLarry Willis for a show of epic proportions. These two giants of the jazz world\nput on a one-of-a-kind show together\, after decades of cultivating careers\napart. Willis and Masekela met while they were both students at the Manhattan\nSchool of Music some 50 years ago. After coming under the tutelage of Dizzy\nGillespie and Louis Armstrong\, Masekela went on to carve out a five-decade-long\n(and counting) career\, releasing over 40 solo albums. His 1986 anti-apartheid\nanthem “Bring Him Back Home (Nelson Mandela)” became a rallying call around the\nworld for Mandela’s release from prison. At the same time\, Willis has performed\nor recorded with almost every great jazz musician of the modern era\, including\nDizzy Gillespie\, Lee Morgan\, Woody Shaw\, Cannonball and Nat Adderley\, and Stan\nGetz. DESCRIPTION:Edward Hirsch\, a MacArthur Fellow\, has published nine books of poems\, including The Living Fire: New and Selected Poems (2010)\, which brings together thirty-five years of work\, and Gabriel: A Poem (2014)\, a book-length elegy that The New Yorker called “a masterpiece of sorrow.”  He has also written five prose books\, among them A Poet’s Glossary (2014)\, a complete compendium of poetic terms\, and How to Read a Poem and Fall in Love with Poetry (1999)\, a national bestseller.  He has received numerous awards and fellowships\, including the National Book Critics Circle Award\, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship\, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award for Literature.  He taught in the Creative Writing Program at the University of Houston for seventeen years.  He now serves as president of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. \nMore information: www.edwardhirsch.com

DESCRIPTION:Please note this event is SOLD OUT. \nThe Friends of the Bruce Springsteen Special Collection\, along with Monmouth University Center for the Arts and Backstreets.com announce a special event to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the release of The River and the forthcoming release of The Ties That Bind: The River Collection box set. \nThe event will include a special guest appearance by Grammy- and Emmy-winning filmmaker Thom Zimny who will be introducing the film\, as well as a big-screen preview presentation of Zimny’s new documentary The Ties That Bind\, which focuses on the making of Bruce Springsteen’s fifth album\, The River. The film contains rare photos and period concert footage\, as well as commentary and solo acoustic guitar performances from Bruce. As an added bonus\, Thom will also present a special one hour big-screen preview cut of the new Zimny-edited concert film Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band: The River Tour\, Tempe 1980. Both films will be included in the forthcoming box-set The Ties That Bind: The River Collection\, which will be released worldwide on December 4\, 2015. \nA Celebration of Bruce Springsteen’s The River\, The Ties That Bind Preview Screening will mark the New Jersey premiere of New Jersey native Thom Zimny’s The Ties That Bind documentary\, as well as a unique extended preview of the Zimny-edited Tempe 1980 film. Bruce Springsteen: A Photographic Journey\, a traveling photography exhibition curated by the GRAMMY Museum Los Angeles\, features 45 iconic images of Bruce Springsteen. The exhibit serves to document a great American music legend\, and will feature photos taken by noted Springsteen photographers Danny Clinch\, Ed Gallucci\, Eric Meola\, Pamela Springsteen and Frank Stefanko will be on view in the Rechnitz Gallery before the film. \nAll proceeds from the film screening will benefit The Bruce Springsteen Special Collection at Monmouth University.

SUMMARY:ART NOW: Coco Fusco- Observations of Predation in Humans\, A Lecture by Dr. Zira\, Animal Psychologist
DESCRIPTION:The Chimp psychologist from Plant of the Apes is back! Zira travelled back in time to visit us 20 years ago and narrowly escaped death at the hands of the paranoid humans who could not tolerate the idea of other primates as equals. After living in seclusion for 20 years and conducting ethological studies of our species from her hideout\, she has emerged in order to share her findings relating to aggressive behavior in members of the home genus. Her lecture is introduced by esteemed posthuman cultural theorist Donna Haraway and is followed by a question and answer session with human audience members. Dr. Zira draws on the cutting edge research in the fields of neuroscience\, primatology and evolutionary biology to interpret the predatory activities of human beings in postindustrial societies around the world. \nCoco Fusco is an interdisciplinary artist and writer and MIT’s MLK Visiting Scholar for 2014-2015. She is a recipient of a 2013 Guggenheim Fellowship\, a 2013 Fulbright Fellowship\, and a 2012 US Artists Fellowship among other prestigious awards\, and her performances and videos have been presented in two Whitney Biennials\, BAM’s Next Wave Festival\, as well as numerous international Biennials and festivals.  Her works have appeared at the Tate Liverpool\, The Museum of Modern Art\, The Walker Art Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona. 

Fusco is the author of English is Broken Here: Notes on Cultural Fusion in the Americas (1995) and The Bodies that Were Not Ours and Other Writings (2001)\, and A Field Guide for Female Interrogators (2008). She is also the editor of Corpus Delecti: Performance Art of the Americas (1999) and Only Skin Deep: Changing Visions of the American Self (2003). She is currently working on a new book entitled Dangerous Moves: Performance and Politics in Cuba. 

Fusco’s work combines electronic media and performance in a variety of formats\, from staged multi-media performances incorporating large scale projections and closed circuit television to live performances streamed to the internet that invite audiences to chart the course of action through chat interaction. 

Fusco received her B.A. in Semiotics from Brown University\, her M.A. in Modern Thought and Literature from Stanford University\, and her Ph.D. in Art and Visual Culture from Middlesex University. \nMore information on Coco Fusco here

DESCRIPTION:Glen Burtnik\, Salvatore Boyd\, Bob Burger & Arne Wendt\, performing as The Band. Together they will be joined by local and national talent including Arlan Feiles\, Kate Taylor\, Bruce Gassman\, Emily Grove\, Remember Jones\, Stringbean\, Yuri Turchyn\, Sonny Kenn\, Ashley McKinley\, Matt Wade\, Puggy DeRosa\, Fred Scribner and More!  Recreating not only the music but the celebration\, camaraderie and talent that took over the stage November 25 back in 1976. \nThe Band’s style of writing and music has influenced so many artists\, bands and songwriters\, from the Grateful Dead and The Beatles to Elvis Costello and Pink Floyd to our own local artists\, throughout the years and continue to do so. This cast will bring you to your feet and take you back in time. SUMMARY:Guest Lecture with Dr. Cesar Gonzalez: “Big Data: Practice and Applications”
DESCRIPTION:The “Big Data” phenomenon has given rise to the emerging discipline of “Data Science.” Data science combines areas from computer science\, artificial intelligence\, and statistics among others\, with the goal of extracting useful information and hidden patterns from large volumes of structured and unstructured data sources. \nThe applications of big data are numerous and go beyond their use in search engines and recommendation systems. In fact\, big data techniques are being applied in science\, health\, and even in what were traditionally considered “soft” sciences\, such as anthropology\, journalism\, etc. \nAfter defining “big data” and “data science\,” Dr. Cesar Gonzalez will present a number of examples that demonstrate the impact of big data in a number of disciplines. In the talk he also reviews the most popular computational and mathematical tools commonly used in this trade. \nDr. Gonzales\, who retired from IBM in 2012 after 29 years of service\, is currently an independent technology consultant working on topics that include Big Data. At IBM Cesar became an IBM Fellow\, an executive position and the highest technical distinction that IBM confers. His technical expertise spans the areas of wireless communications and the development of video compression algorithms and systems. Early in his IBM career\, he contributed to the development of the ubiquitous MPEG standard for digital video compression. He then led the research and development in IBM’s Digital Video Products group. His work included the development of ASICs and systems-on-a-chip for MPEG-2 encoders\, set-top boxes\, and other digital video consumer products. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and the recipient of multiple awards from IBM as well as other external professional organizations. \nThis event is co-sponsored by the MU Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering and the New Jersey Coast Section of IEEE. \nThis event will be held at Magill Commons\, Rooms 107-108-109. DESCRIPTION:  \nMusic: Gabriel Fauré (Emeralds)\, Igor Stravinsky (Rubies)\, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (Diamonds)\nChoreography: George Balanchine \nThis opulent triptych was inspired by Balanchine’s visit to the famous jeweler Van Cleef & Arpels on New York’s Fifth Avenue\, celebrating the cities and dance schools of Paris\, New York and St. Petersburg\, each bound to its own precious stone. With this first abstract ballet\, Balanchine built an homage of captivating beauty to the dance schools that had forged his style: Paris\, New York\, and St Petersburg\, each represented by a contrasting jewel: emerald\, ruby\, and diamond. Jewels offers a unique occasion to enjoy Balanchine’s visually captivating work\, as the Bolshoi is only company authorized by the Balanchine Trust to film and broadcast his masterpiece. Starring Olga Smirnova\, Semyon Chudin\, Vladislav Lantratov\, Anna Tikhomirova\, Ekaterina Krysanova\, and the Bolshoi Corps de Ballet.

SUMMARY:SUSAN AMONS: WILD SIDE Maine Monoprints
DESCRIPTION:Lecture: February 11 from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. | Wilson Hall Auditorium\nOpening Reception: Thursday February 11\, from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m.\nFree and open to the public \nSusan Amons lives on a rare and beautiful peninsula in southern Maine. The estuary forms the western boundary\, and the ocean stretches out to the east. Every day\, Susan observes unusual birds and animals living in this preserved pocket of wildlife habitat. Marsh hawks\, eagles\, ibis\, geese\, mink\, and fisher cats\, are some of the species included in her repertoire of study. In late summer\, Susan camps in the solitude of the north woods. The lake supports it’s own unique selection of species including; salmon\, trout\, moose\, otter\, and loons. Susan loves to sit on a rock in the stream and paint. \nEach winter\, Susan returns to the studio to work on large-scale prints inspired by images that she records from nature throughout the year. To develop her monoprints\, she creates a group of mylar shapes which she inks\, prints\, and re-inks; building up color layers and altering spatial relationships. A series of related work evolves from the printed collection of cut out shapes. What Susan enjoys most about this process\, is that she is able to pursue multiple variations of her original idea. Susan’s final prints are multiple and varied\, brilliantly frontal\, or receding in space like the animals themselves\, a memory\, mysterious\, and wild by nature. \nSusan Amons holds a BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art\, and has received 21 artists’ fellowships from the Vermont Studio Center\, The Women’s Studio Workshop in New York\, and the Heliker-LaHotan Foundation in Maine. Susan is a member of the prestigious Peregrine Press in Maine\, and the venerable National Association of Women Artists in New York. Her work was chosen for the acclaimed exhibit\, “Maine Women Pioneers”\, at the University of New England in 2013. Her two recent solo exhibits include; “Natural Vision”\, at the Liriodendron Mansion in Maryland\, 2014\, and “Tidal Edge”\, at The Courthouse Gallery\, in Ellsworth\, Maine\, 2015. \nSusan Amons is represented by numerous galleries on the east coast. Her work is included in many public collections including; The Portland Museum of Art and The Farnsworth Art Museum in Maine\, The New York and Boston Public Libraries\, The Indiana University Library\, The University of New England Art Gallery\, Colby\, Bates\, and Bowdoin College Collections in Maine\, and the Zimmerli Museum Collection at Rutgers University in New Jersey. \nFor more information\, please see susanamons.com
