SUMMARY:On Screen In Person: REBEL
DESCRIPTION:One of the thousand women said to have fought in the Civil War\, Loreta Janeta Velazquez altered her sex\, ethnicity\, and identity in order to become a Confederate soldier spy and double agent for the Union\, only to be dismissed as a hoax after revealing her story in her scandalous 1876 memoir\, The Woman in Battle. REBEL is a detective story about a woman\, a myth\, and the politics of national memory.   \nMaria Agui Carter immigrated to the U.S. from Ecuador\, grew up an undocumented “Dreamer\,” and graduated from Harvard University.  She been a grantee of\, and has served as a panelist and juror for institutions including film festivals and organizations such as ITVS\, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts. She has won a George Peabody Gardner\, a Warren\, a Corporation for Public Broadcasting/PBS fellowship\, and a Rockefeller Fellowship\, among others\, and has served as a visiting scholar/artist at Harvard\, Tulane and Brandeis universities.  She is a trustee of the National Association of Latino Independent Producers and on the Advisory Board of the Filmmaker’s Collaborative. Agui Carter has been a working member of the Writer’s Guild since 2000. Her new play 14 Freight Trains opened to excellent reviews at Arena Stage in Washington\, DC in fall of 2014.  Her new script about an undocumented teen code-writer enamored of the Monarch butterfly called The Secret Life of La Mariposa\, was a Sundance Screenwriter’s Lab finalist.  She is currently developing a documentary on immigration called Mother Land. \nThere will be a Q&A with director Maria Agui Carter following the screening. \nOn Screen/In Person is made possible by Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation through the generous support of the National Endowment for the Arts’ Regional Touring Program.

DESCRIPTION:Exhibition extended through August 18 \nPollak Gallery and outdoor locations on campus\nDocumentary Screening: May 18\, 10 AM at Wilson Hall \nMichael Malpass’ (1946-1991) artistic legacy consists of sculpture\, drawings \, collage\, paintings\, and assemblages. He is best known for his spheres\, which revitalize found industrial objects using bandsaw and traditional blacksmithing techniques. He described his sculpture\, overall\, as “a blend of artistry\, collage\, craftsmanship and movement\,” terms that could be applied to his work in other media\, as well. His vast\, stimulating and powerful body of work has established him as one of the most respected sculptors of the 20th century. \nThe opening reception will include a premiere screening of a new documentary “Michael Malpass – A Great Circle” created by Monmouth University Communication students under the direction of Erin Fleming\,\ndirector of Production Services at 7:30 pm in Pollak Theatre.

SUMMARY:GUERRILLA GIRLS ON TOUR: Act Like A Feminist Artist
DESCRIPTION:Aphra Behn shares her experiences as a feminist activist and artist for almost 20 years as a member of Guerrilla Girls (1997-2001) and Guerrilla Girl On Tour! (2001 – present). Revealing the inside workings of the grassroots groups\, she discusses the successes (protests; fax blitzes; speak-outs and street theatre); the struggles (hate mail; death threats; backlash) and the downright defeats (sabotage; infighting). Act Like a Feminist Artist 
is a 60 to 90 minute interactive talk\, audience members will be challenged to rethink the concepts of what it means to be an “activist\,” “artist\,” and “feminist.” The talk is framed with readings from Aphra’s upcoming memoir\, “UN/MASKED\, My Secret Identity Revealed” (Skyhorse Publications\, October 2016.) A lively Q and A will follow the talk.

SUMMARY:Songwriters By The Sea
DESCRIPTION:Distinguished NJ Songwriters Joe Rapolla and Joe D’Urso are back this year hosting the celebrated Songwriters by the Sea series at the Lauren K. Woods Theatre. What once started in a small coffee shop as an area for local songwriters has\nnow grown into a series that features some of the top songwriters in the country. \nThis year\, the show features a twist of rock music and country music. The rock music\nis courtesy of Eric Bazilian\, founding member of the rock band Hooters. Bazilian is also known internationally for his efforts as a Grammy nominated songwriter\, as well as being an arranger\, multi-instrumentalist\, and producer. \nSinging-songwriting duo Williams Honor will bring a bit of the country to Woods Theatre. The duo have exploded in Asbury Park’s music scene\, and features producer and multi-instrumentalist Gordon Brown and performer powerhouse Reagan Richards. The two previously have worked and toured with many national acts before coming together to form the Jersey Shore’s first ever country duo. They’re about to release their first single to country radio “Send It To Me” from their debut album. \nOpening the show will be Monmouth University students Daniel Amato and Brittany Cannarozzi. \nThe net proceeds will support Monmouth University’s Endowed Music Industry Scholarship. \nThere will be a pre-show hospitality reception at 7 p.m. and post-show reception (included with ticket price)! \nSponsored by the Monmouth University Leon Hess Business School and Business Council.

DESCRIPTION:The Met stage ignites when soprano Kristine Opolais and tenor Roberto Alagna join forces in Puccini’s obsessive love story. Opolais sings the title role of the country girl who transforms herself into a Parisian temptress\, while Roberto Alagna is the dashing student who desperately woos her. Director Richard Eyre places the action in occupied France in a film noir setting. “Desperate passion” is the phrase Puccini himself used to describe the opera that confirmed his position as the preeminent Italian opera composer of his day. Met Principal Conductor Fabio Luisi leads the stirring score.

DESCRIPTION:Jane Hirshfield’s poetry speaks to the central issues of human existence—desire and loss\, impermanence and beauty\, the many dimensions of our connection with others and the wider community of creatures and objects with which we share our lives. Demonstrating with quiet authority what it means to awaken into the full capacities of attention\, her work sets forth a hard-won affirmation of our human fate. Described by The New York Times as “radiant and passionate” and by other reviewers as “ethically aware\,” “insightful and eloquent\,” and as conveying “succinct wisdom\,” her subjects range from the metaphysical and passionate to the political\, ecological\, and scientific to subtle unfoldings of daily life and experience. Her book of essays on the “mind of poetry” and her several collections presenting and co-translating the work of poets from the past have become classics in their fields. An intimate\, profound\, and generous master of her art\, Hirshfield has taught at UC Berkeley\, Duke University\, Bennington College\, and elsewhere\, and her many appearances at writers’ conferences and literary festivals in this country and abroad have been highly acclaimed. \nJane Hirshfield is the author of eight collections of poetry\, including the newly published The Beauty (Knopf\, 2015); Come\, Thief; After (shortlisted for England’s T.S. Eliot Prize and named a “best book of 2006” by the Washington Post\, the San Francisco Chronicle\, and the London Financial Times); Given Sugar\, Given Salt (finalist for the 2001 National Book Critics Circle Award); The Lives of the Heart; and The October Palace\, as well as two  books of essays\, the newly published Ten Windows: How Great Poems Transform the World (Knopf\, 2015) and Nine Gates: Entering the Mind of Poetry. DESCRIPTION:Celebrated author Erik Larson will speak at Monmouth University on Monday\, March 28\, 2016\, from 7 – 8:30 p.m. in Pollak Theatre. This event is free and open to the public. \n \nErik Larson has written five books that have appeared on the New York Times‘ bestseller list\, including such critically acclaimed works as In the Garden of Beasts: Love\, Terror\, and an American Family in Hitler’s Berlin and The Devil in the White City. Mr. Larson’s most recent book is  Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania\, which deals with the implications of the sinking of the Lusitania by German torpedoes in May 1915 and will be the subject of his talk. \nThis event is the inaugural lecture in the Department of History and Anthropology’s Charles Mayes World War I Lecture Series. \nMr. Larson’s talk at Monmouth University will be his first public appearance since the release of Dead Wake in paperback. Forced to fight as a gladiator and kill one of his friends\, Spartacus plots an unprecedented upheaval. Grigorovich’s Spartacus was created at the Bolshoi in 1968 and has since remained the Russian company’s signature ballet. This most spectacular production is an epic tour de force\, giving full expression to the virility and strength for which the Bolshoi’s male dancers are renowned. Lead guitarist for Paul McCartney’s Wings\, Juber is a world-class guitar virtuoso solo artist\, composer and arranger. Laurence Juber has released 18 critically acclaimed solo albums\, including Guitarist and PCH. His solo CD\, Pop Goes Guitar\, includes the arrangement of Stand By Me that was heard nationally in the ‘Diamonds Are Forever’ commercial. His last release\, Wooden Horses\, showcases LJ’s compositions for solo guitar\, and his latest CD is LJ Plays The Beatles Vol.2\, a follow-up to Vol 1 which is one of Acoustic Guitar Magazine’s all-time Top Ten acoustic albums. Rooted in the Expanded Cinema tradition\, his work explores the relationship between composition\, interface\, performance\, score\, and synesthetic audiovisual systems. \nEric Barry Drasin’s website \nPhillip David Stearns is also based in Brooklyn. His work is centered on the use of electronic technologies and electronic media to explore dynamic relationships between ideas and material. SUMMARY:J. Seward Johnson Sculptures
DESCRIPTION:Following an early career as a painter\, Seward Johnson turned his talents to the medium of sculpture. Since then\, more than 450 of Johnson’s life-size cast bronze figures have been featured in private collections and museums in the United States\, Canada\, Europe and Asia\, as well as prominent places in the public realm such as Rockefeller Center\, Pacific Place\, Hong Kong\, Les Halles in Paris\, and Via Condotti in Rome. Seward Johnson is most widely known for his sculptures depicting people engaged in every day activities. Johnson’s desire to highlight the mundane in his Celebrating the Familiar sculpture series has brought a unique voice to the world of art in public spaces. \nJohnson is often recognized for his most dramatic work — and also his largest — the 70’ aluminum giant entitled The Awakening. This sculpture was selected for the International Sculpture Conference & Exhibition and is currently sited along the Potomac River at National Harbor in Washington\, DC. This work was profiled in LIFE magazine\, Time Magazine and has become a “must see” destination in the nation’s capitol. In recent years\, Seward Johnson’s monumental scale sculptures have captured the attention of the international media and a global audience. Among these are the 26 foot tall Forever Marilyn with her skirt blowing upwards defying the stainless steel and aluminum materials. DESCRIPTION:The\nBorealis Wind Quintet\, like the Spectacular Aurora Borealis\, displays a\nbrilliant array of sparkling color and magic in the music they perform.\nNominated for a Grammy in 2006\, they are without question the major wind\nquintet of our time. \nTheir warm yet commanding stage presence\, combined with great music\, always\ncaptivates the audience. Engaging and delightful\, the Borealis brings a fresh\nsound and an exciting program to each performance. They are recognized for\ntheir fundamental contributions to the wind quintet literature with their many\ncommissions\, recordings\, and editions of rare and traditional music. \nTheir tours have taken them to major halls throughout the U.S. including Weill\nHall (Carnegie) in New York\, the Frick Museum\, Princeton\, Notre Dame\, Wolf\nTrap\, Four Seasons in Berkeley\, Strathmore in Maryland and the Corning Museum\nin New York\, just to name a few. The Borealis recordings number five with one\nGrammy nomination. DESCRIPTION:Reception: Monday\, April 11 | 4:30- 6 PM | Library Seminar Room 102\nGallery Hours: Tues. – Thurs.: 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.\, Friday: 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.\, Saturday: 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.\, Sunday: 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. \nBorn in Philadelphia in 1917\, Jacob Landau launched his career as an illustrator\, winning national prizes at age 16 and a scholarship to the Philadelphia College of Art. He had over sixty one-person shows and was the recipient of many awards\, including Tiffany\, Guggenheim and National Arts Council grants. Many of his works are featured in permanent collections in the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York\, among others. A master teacher\, he retired as professor emeritus at New York’s Pratt Institute. In 1996\, he was awarded an honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts by Monmouth University. \nJacob Landau viewed art as a defense against chaos. That all is subject to entropy haunted the artist his whole life. So art becomes a weapon to combat this descent into disorder. And it is a powerful weapon. For “each time we create something\,” Landau has said\, “we win a victory over decay.” Monmouth University’s exhibit “Order & Chaos” demonstrates this triumph. The exhibition features a selection of fifteen pieces. All works are from Monmouth University’s extensive collection of Jacob Landau’s work\, comprising over 300 prints\, drawings and paintings. The collection was gifted to Monmouth University in 2008 by the Jacob Landau Institute of Roosevelt\, NJ. This exhibit is co-sponsored by the Jewish Culture Studies Program and the Honors School of Monmouth University. \nThis event is free & open to the public. SUMMARY:On Screen In Person: Deaf Jam
DESCRIPTION:Illuminating the extraordinary power of American Sign Language (ASL) poetry\, Deaf Jam is story of Aneta Brodski’s bold journey into the spoken word slam scene. When Aneta\, a deaf Israeli immigrant high school student\, makes an extraordinary connection with a hearing Palestinian slam poet\, they transcend personal and political divisions to generate a new form of poetry that speaks to both the hearing and the deaf.  \nJudy Lieff is a filmmaker and educator with a background in dance and experimental film. She participated in the American Film Showcase 2013/2014 program with her first feature documentary\, Deaf Jam\, traveling to South Korea\, Zimbabwe\, and Turkey.  Judy won a finishing grant from ITVS for the film. She is on faculty at SUNY Purchase teaching film production that explores the intersections of film and dance. Judy earned her M.F.A. in dance & experimental film/video from the California Institute of the Arts (Cal Arts)\, following a career as a professional dancer. Her credits include: a Dance On Camera residency with BBC producer Bob Lockyer at the Banff Centre for the Arts\, a National Dance/Media fellowship from the Pew Charitable Trusts\, and six grants for media projects with youth. Judy has years of experience working in production and post-production on commercials\, industrials\, shorts\, and EPKs for feature films. Additionally\, she has worked as a motion capture performer/choreographer\, and as a stop-motion performer/choreographer on projects including Terry Gilliam’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Pat O’Neil’s The Decay of Fiction.There will be a Q&A with director Judy Lieff following the screening. \nOn Screen/In Person is made possible by Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation through the generous support of the National Endowment for the Arts’ Regional Touring Program.
