SUMMARY:National Theatre of London: Man and Superman (Broadcast in HD)
DESCRIPTION:Academy Award® nominee Ralph Fiennes (The English Patient\, Schindler’s List; Oedipus at the National Theatre) plays Jack Tanner in this exhilarating reinvention of Shaw’s witty\, provocative classic. \nA romantic comedy\, an epic fairytale\, a fiery philosophical debate\, Man and Superman asks fundamental questions about how we live. \nJack Tanner\, celebrated radical thinker and rich bachelor\, seems an unlikely choice as guardian to the alluring heiress\, Ann. But she takes it in her assured stride and\, despite the love of a poet\, she decides to marry and tame this dazzling revolutionary. \nTanner\, appalled by the whiff of domesticity\, is tipped off by his chauffeur and flees to Spain\, where he is captured by bandits and meets The Devil. An extraordinary dream-debate\, heaven versus hell\, ensues. Following in hot pursuit\, Ann is there when Tanner awakes\, as fierce in her certainty as he is in his.

SUMMARY:Met Opera: CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA/ PAGLIACCI (Broadcast in HD)
DESCRIPTION:Opera’s most enduring tragic double bill returns in an evocative new production from Sir David McVicar\, who sets the action across two time periods but in the same Sicilian village. Marcelo Álvarez rises to the\nchallenge of playing the dual tenor roles of Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana and Canio in Pagliacci. Rae Smith (War Horse) has designed the moodily atmospheric 1900 village square setting of Cavalleria\, which transforms to a 1948 truck stop for the doomed vaudeville troupe of Pagliacci. Eva-Maria Westbroek (Cav) and Patricia Racette (Pag) sing the unlucky heroines\, and Met Principal Conductor Fabio Luisi is on the podium.\nBroadcast in HD \n

SUMMARY:MARC COHN and SHAWN COLVIN
DESCRIPTION:Two brilliant tunesmiths\, each presenting a complete show\, all in one unforgettable evening. As a storyteller\, Shawn Colvin is both keen and warm-hearted\, leavening even the toughest tales with tenderness\, empathy and a searing sense of humor. Her spellbinding songs are slow-release works of craft and catharsis told through clever lyrics\, polished phrases and delicious sarcasm. Songwriter and singer\, Marc Cohn combines the precision of a brilliant tunesmith with the passion of a great soul man. He’s a natural storyteller\, balancing the exuberant with the poignant\, and able to distill universal truth out of his often romantic\, drawn-from-life tales. The Grammy-winning artists behind such classics as “Sunny Came Home” and “Walking in Memphis” will leave the audience spellbound in what is sure to be a great night of music. \n(produced by UMT PRESENTS)

SUMMARY:When Textiles Talk. A Quilting Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:This juried exhibition includes quilts from members of Rebecca’s Reel Quilt Guild in Middletown and the Beach Plum Quiltmakers of Ocean County.  Historically\, quilts have been made to convey emotions\, record events and to evoke memories; to greet or say good-bye; to sell or raffle for charity; to celebrate\, to commemorate or to comfort.  The need to communicate requires quilters to express themselves for the same various reasons as other artists. Each quilt in this exhibit is accompanied by a story card explaining the artist’s vision or motivation. \nOpening Reception:  Aug 1  | 5 – 7 PM
