DESCRIPTION:It’s been 30 years since the Cowboy Junkies led by siblings Margo\, Michael and Peter Timmins on vocals\, guitar and drums respectively\, plus Alan Anton on bass —performed their first\ngigs at various Toronto clubs. For three decades\, the Cowboy Junkies have remained true to their unique artistic vision and to the introspective\, quiet intensity that is their musical signature\, creating a critically acclaimed body of original work that has endeared them to an audience unwavering in its loyalty. \nJoined by multi-instrumentalist Jeff Bird\, the core Cowboy quartet returns to Monmouth for a retrospective of their three decades playing (and listening to) all manifestations of popular music. Expect an evening that runs the gamut from the folky intimacy of the band’s earliest efforts\, to an always surprising selection of covers (Springsteen\, Stones\, Talking Heads\, The Cure) — although to be sure\, simply delivering “the expected” has never been part of the Cowboy Junkies playbook.

DESCRIPTION:Experience Native American culture through authentic dance\, music and ceremony when the Lakota Sioux Dance Theatre performs Ċokata Upō! Ċokata Upō! – Come to the Center is the story of the birth\, death and rebirth of a nation. The performance represents an experience the New York Times describes as a “…great sense of theatricality…a visual treat…more than a spectacle…A ritual celebration that made dancing a ceremonial act.” This three-part work celebrates the culture of the Lakota people. Set against a backdrop of spectacular video imagery and accompanied by live traditional\, sacred\, and courting songs\, narratives and creation stories are woven into the fabric of the performance. Under the direction of choreographer Henry Smith\, the company includes some of the most highly acclaimed championship performers of the Sioux Nation.

DESCRIPTION:In December 2012\, Olivia Zinnah died of complications from a rape injury caused when she was seven years old. After filmmaker Jessica Vale became personally involved with Olivia and her mother while working on another project in Monrovia\, Liberia\, her quest to film them became a mission of hope and medical help in a country where rape is the number one crime\, and the majority of the victims are children. \nJessica Vale is an accomplished non-fiction television producer and editor\, working freelance for over 12 years. Originally from New Hope\, Pennsylvania\, Jess graduated from the film program at Temple University. Her credits include work for NBC News\, CBS News\, National Geographic\, History Channel\, The Weinstein Co.\, and more. Small Small Thing: The Olivia Zinnah Story is her award winning feature directorial debut which had its worldwide television premiere on Al Jazeera English. The film received high praise and Vale received substantial media attention including appearances on MSNBC’s Melissa Harris Perry Show\, Huffington Post Live and WABC NY’s Weekend Morning Show. Vale is currently post producing LIV a feature narrative by director Catherine Eaton\, as she works on her next documentary The Limits of Dissent. She a member of the NYC chapter of Film Fatales. \nThere will be a Q&A with director Jessica Vale following the screening. \nOn Screen/In Person is made possible by Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation through the generous support of the National Endowment for the Arts’ Regional Touring Program.

SUMMARY:Future of the Ocean Symposium & Champions of the Ocean Awards
DESCRIPTION:The Monmouth University Urban Coast Institute presents the 11th Annual Future of the Ocean Symposium and Champions of the Ocean Awards Luncheon on Thursday\, October 29\, 2015 at Wilson Hall. The theme of this year’s symposium is “A Revolution at Sea: Ocean Exploration\, Technology & Discovery.” \nThe symposium will feature presentations by distinguished speakers: Dr. Sylvia Earle\, National Geographic Society Explorer-in-Residence; and Terry Garcia\, National Geographic Society Chief Science and Exploration Officer. Both will be honored as National Ocean Champions at the luncheon following the symposium. \nThe event will also recognize Regional Ocean Champions representing organizations that were instrumental in the preservation of 38\,000 square miles of coral reefs from Long Island to Virginia. \nThe symposium is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:Lucy Kaplansky and Richard Shindell have been singing together for 25 years. And they’ve talked about making a record together for just as long. In summer 2014 an extraordinarily successful Kickstarter campaign raised the initial goal of $40\,000 in 24 hours\, going on to ultimately reach over $85\,000\, to bring that desire to fruition under the band name “The Pine Hill Project.” “Tomorrow You’re Going\,” an Americana masterwork of great songs\, gorgeous harmonies\, and stunning production was released in 2015. The album is at turns meditative\, joyful\, rollicking\, and deeply moving\, and a one of a kind musical event. You don’t want to miss the opportunity to see and hear Richard and Lucy perform as “The Pine Hill Project” live in the perfect setting of Pollak Theatre.

This exhibit tracks the progress of the Mbiriizi Advanced Primary School and its children over the last 12 years. It celebrates their lives through pictures\, stories\, crafts\, batiks and artifacts. See the growth made possible through one woman’s determination to make a difference. The richness and beauty of the culture (as well as its poverty) is shared through audio clips from travelers who have visited and experienced the school. It is an exhibit of joy\, of determination\, of success\, of life.

SUMMARY:The Lion\, The Witch and the Wardrobe
DESCRIPTION:This enchanting musical is based on C.S. Lewis’ adventure story about four children of war-torn England\, who accidentally enter the land of Narnia by climbing through a magic wardrobe. This strange and wondrous place is ruled by the cold-hearted White Witch\, who makes the winter last year round. Although they seem unlikely saviors\, the children fulfill an ancient prophecy by defeating the witch\, thus restoring sunshine and peace to the spell-bound Narnia and returning the great Lion King Aslan to his throne. \n(Approximately one hour in length\, recommended for grades 1-7) Curriculum Connections: Literature-Based\, Music\, Visual Arts.

DESCRIPTION:November 4\, 5\, 6\, 7 (at 8 p.m.) \nNovember 8 (at 3 p.m. – Sunday) \nNovember 11\, 12\, 13\, 14 (at 8 p.m.) \nNovember 15 (at 3 p.m. – Sunday) \n“In olden days\, a glimpse of stocking was looked on as something shocking\, now\, heaven knows\, ANYTHING GOES!” The classic American musical by Cole Porter will be the first musical presented in the fall semester at historic Woods Theatre by Monmouth University’s Department of Music and Theatre Arts. The show\, which debuted in 1934\, introduced such classic American standards as “You’re the Top”\, “I Get A Kick Out of You”\, and the title tune\, “Anything Goes”. Proof of its popularity is the repeated revivals on Broadway\, most recently in 2011 by the Roundabout Theatre Company in NYC.

DESCRIPTION:In her more than 60 years as a groundbreaking artist\, Miriam Beerman has overcome loss and tragedy to inspire friends\, family\, and fans about how to remain defiant\, creative and strong. Miriam Beerman: Expressing the Chaos is the retrospective of a remarkable career and the profile of an artist whose personal demons and empathy for human suffering colored a lifetime of her work. \nJonathan Gruber is the executive producer of Black Eye Productions\, where he has been producing and directing award winning documentaries\, films\, videos and interactive media since 1995. His work has aired on PBS\, The History Channel\, the National Geographic Channel\, and Discovery Channels. He has worked extensively in historical subjects\, including Alexander the Great\, Leonardo da Vinci\, and the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima. His first feature documentary\, Pola’s March\, aired on public television stations across the United States\, and received a distinguished Crystal Heart Award from the Heartland Film Festival. His second feature documentary film\, Life is a Banquet: The Rosalind Russell Story\, premiered at film festivals around the U.S. and has aired on PBS stations and on ABC/Australia. He is currently screening two feature documentaries: Jewish Soldiers in Blue & Gray\, a first-of-its-kind film on the Jewish experience during the Civil War\, as well as the award-winning Follow Me: the Yoni Netanyahu Story.  There will be a Q&A with director Jonathan Gruber following the screening.On Screen/In Person is made possible by Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation through the generous support of the National Endowment for the Arts’ Regional Touring Program.

DESCRIPTION:The Monmouth University Urban Coast Institute will host a symposium exploring the results of a three-year comprehensive study of the health of Barnegat Bay on Tuesday\, November 10\, 2015. The event\, titled “What Lies Beneath: Barnegat Bay\,” will feature presentations by three groups of researchers who worked on the study. \nThe New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) initiated the study to determine the sources and extent of environmental problems in the bay\, and identify actions that could be taken to slow and ultimately reverse the bay’s decline. DESCRIPTION:In 2004\, the first public exhumation of a mass grave in Andalucía\, Spain took place in the province of Cádiz\, bringing to light the buried history of repression under the Franco dictatorship. Professor Cate-Arries’ lecture focuses on the oral testimonies she has recorded with family members of the civilian victims who were “disappeared” by the regime in 1936. She examines how private mourning practices\, personal objects of memory\, and stories once told behind closed doors preserved a collective memory of the losers of a civil war who decades ago fought for the democratic ideals embraced by today’s Spain.

DESCRIPTION:Co-sponsored by Dept. of Computer Science & Software Engineering (CSSE) and the New Jersey Coast Section of IEEE \nTuesday\, November 10\, 2015 \n7 – 9 p.m. \nBey Hall 113 (Young Auditorium) \nRSVP Information: Not required\, though you may register at Technical Talk – Digital Forensics at the Intersection of Public Policy and Civil Rights. \nThis event will feature networking and refreshments\, guest speaker\, and Q & A. \nDigital forensics is a rapidly expanding field where practitioners apply scientific techniques in order to investigate and draw conclusions about evidence\, with the goal of presenting findings in courtroom settings. The manner in which the forensics expert is required to perform their work is greatly influenced by prior court rulings and government laws\, both recent and older ones dating back to the Nation’s founding. Some public policy and civil rights issues related to computers and digital data will be explored using examples from the speaker’s casework\, as well as newsworthy current events. \nABOUT THE SPEAKER:\nDr. Rebecca Mercuri is the owner of Notable Software\, Inc. where she provides digital forensics investigations and expert witness services for criminal and civil matters\, along with computer security and certification compliance evaluations. \nEducation includes a B.S. in Computer Science from Penn State\, M.S. in Computer Science from Drexel University\, as well as an M.S. in Engineering and Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. During 2003-2005 she was a fellow at Harvard University\, performing research on computer security topics\, and has testified to local\, state and federal government agencies on the many inherent problems with electronic voting systems. Her sworn testimony in Bush v. Gore was cited in briefs to the U.S. Supreme Court. \nDr. Mercuri’s publications include a book chapter on Digital Image Forensics\, and numerous Security Watch and Inside Risks articles for the Communications of the ACM magazine\, where she also served as a Contributing Editor. Rebecca has held leadership roles with the Association of Computing Machinery\, the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers\, and the Audio Engineering Society\, and is a frequent presenter at conferences and events promoting STEM education.
