DESCRIPTION:Mihaela Moscaliuc is the author of the poetry collections Cemetery Ink (University of Pittsburgh Press\, 2021)\,  Immigrant Model (University of Pittsburgh Press\, 2015) and Father Dirt (Alice James Books\, 2010)\, translator of Liliana Ursu’s Clay and Star (Etruscan Press\, 2019) and Carmelia Leonte’s The Hiss of the Viper (Carnegie Mellon University Press\, 2015)\, editor of Insane Devotion: On the Writing of Gerald Stern (Trinity University Press\, 2016)\, and co-editor (with Michael Waters) of Border Lines: Poems of Migration (Knopf\, 2020). She has published scholarship in the field of Romani Studies\, on issues of representation\, appropriation\, exophony and code-switching\, and on the works of Kimiko Hahn\, Agha Shahid Ali\, and Colum McCann. She is the Translation Editor for Plume. \nMoscaliuc has received two Glenna Luschei Awards from Prairie Schooner\, residency fellowships from The Virginia Center for the Creative Arts\, MacDowell\, and Le Chateau de Lavigny (Switzerland)\, Dairy Hollow\, two Individual Artist Fellowships from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts\, and a Fulbright fellowship to Romania. \nShe is graduate program director and associate professor of English at Monmouth University (New Jersey) and former poetry & translation faculty in the low-residency M.F.A. program at Drew University (New Jersey). \nMichael Waters’ recent books include Sinnerman (Etruscan Press\, 2023)\, Caw (BOA Editions\, 2020)\, & The Dean of Discipline (University of Pittsburgh Press\, 2018). Darling Vulgarity (BOA Editions\, 2006) was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. His co-edited anthologies include Border Lines: Poems of Migration (Knopf\, 2020) & Reel Verse: Poems About the Movies (Knopf\, 2019). His poems have appeared in numerous journals\, includingPoetry\, American Poetry Review\, Paris Review\, Yale Review\, & Kenyon Review. DESCRIPTION:Anthony Davis’s groundbreaking opera\, which premiered in 1986\, arrives at the Met at long last. Robert O’Hara\, who was nominated for a Tony Award in 2020 for his direction of Slave Play\, oversees a new staging that imagines Malcolm as an everyman whose story transcends time and space. A cast of breakout artists take part in the operatic retelling of Malcom X’s life. Baritone Will Liverman\, who triumphed in the Met premiere of Terence Blanchard’s Fire Shut Up in My Bones\, sings Malcolm. Soprano Leah Hawkins plays his mother\, Louise; mezzo-soprano Raehann Bryce-Davis is his sister Ella; bass-baritone Michael Sumuel is his brother Reginald; and tenor Victor Ryan Robertson is the Nation of Islam leader Elijah Muhammad. Thus a new generation of artists such as Gerry and the Pacemakers\, Hermans Hermits\, Petula Clark\, and the Rolling Stones joined the Fab Four in changing the charts. By 1964\, the British Invasion had reached—and ultimately conquered—the United States. \nThis two-session virtual course taught by Kit O’Toole will survey some of the major artists of the First Wave period\, from 1963-1967. It will cover genres from pop to the beginnings of psychedelia\, and will examine other acts such as the Who\, Dusty Springfield\, the Animals\, the Hollies\, and many more. In addition\, the class will study the impact of the First Wave on the charts and on American pop and rock music. DESCRIPTION:Sung in Spanish and inspired by the magical realism of Gabriel García Márquez\, Mexican composer Daniel Catán’s 1996 opera focuses on an opera diva\, Florencia Grimaldi\, who returns to her native Brazil to perform and to search for her lost lover\, who has vanished into the jungle. The Met premiere stars soprano Ailyn Pérez as Florencia in a new production by Mary Zimmerman that brings the mystical realm of the Amazon to the Met stage. The distinguished ensemble of artists portraying the diva’s fellow travelers on the river boat to Manaus features Gabriella Reyes as the journalist Rosalba\, bass-baritone Greer Grimsley as the ship’s captain\, baritone Mattia Olivieri as his enigmatic first mate\, tenor Mario Chang as the captain’s nephew Arcadio\, and mezzo-soprano Nancy Fabiola Herrera and baritone Michael Chioldi as the feuding couple Paula and Álvaro\, with Yannick Nézet-Séguin on the podium.

DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by the Public History Minor at Monmouth University \nThe Public History Minor at Monmouth University hosted the first annual Julian Francis Abele “Out of the Shadows” Virtual Public History Symposium via Zoom in 2021. Free for presenters and attendees alike\, the Symposium is intended as a welcoming place for public history practitioners at all levels\, established and emerging scholars\, and graduate and undergraduate students to share their public history work on individuals or groups in history whose legacies have been purposefully or inadvertently suppressed\, overshadowed\, or underappreciated. We hope to bring these parties out of the shadows and into the fuller appreciation that they so richly deserve. \nThe Symposium is named in honor of pioneering African American architect Julian Francis Abele\, who contributed greatly to the design of Monmouth University’s Great Hall (previously known as both Shadow Lawn and Wilson Hall). Everyone who has attended Monmouth University has personal memories of the building\, a National Historic Landmark. But if you ask them about it\, they are probably more likely to mention Woodrow Wilson’s brief time at the original Shadow Lawn (not “ours”)\, or the current mansion’s starring role as Daddy Warbucks’s home in the movie Annie than they are the fact that it was designed in large part by perhaps “the greatest American born Beaux-Arts architect\,” Julian Francis Abele. Monmouth University’s Fall 2020 Museums and Archives Management Basics class sought to increase awareness about Abele’s role in the creation of what is perhaps our University’s most beloved landmark by creating “The Julian Abele Project.” Now\, we hope to honor Abele’s name with this annual virtual public history symposium\, designed to bring regular attention to Abele’s story and to highlight work focused on other figures underrepresented in the historical record.

SUMMARY:Journeys of Interdependence: Portraits of First-Generation Identity in Higher Education
DESCRIPTION:The lives and experiences of students\, families\, faculty and professional staff who identify as first-generation are the subject of increased attention in higher education across the United States. The success of programs\, initiatives\, and interventions mostly focus on measurable student “outcomes” but may often miss the complicated narratives of aspiration\, sacrifice\, accomplishment and identity work first-generation students\, families\, faculty\, staff and communities navigate.  Portraiture can make visible the triumphs and challenges of being first in the family in higher educational spaces. This juried exhibition features works that highlight the  first-generation college experience through portraiture  made in a variety of media\, including painting\, drawing\, sculpture\, photography\, printmaking and textiles. \nArtist Reception: Rescheduled to Friday\, March 1 from 5-7 pm.
