SUMMARY:Dawes
DESCRIPTION:The California-based roots rock band composed of brothers Taylor (guitars and vocals) and Griffin Goldsmith (drums)\, along with Wylie Gelber (bass) and Tay Strathairn (keyboards)\, was heavily influenced by the gentle\, acoustic-based musical trappings and rich vocal harmony of the Laurel Canyon sound (Crosby\, Stills & Nash\, Neil Young\, Joni Mitchell)\, as well as by the shambling\, romanticized Americana of The Band. Last fall they found themselves traveling East to record their third album in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. The tracks they laid down at Asheville’s Echo Mountain Studio have yielded a 12-song disc of tremendous sonic and narrative clarity. Stories Don’t End spotlights the group’s maturing skills as arrangers\, performers\, and interpreters who shape the raw material supplied by chief songwriter and lead vocalist Taylor Goldsmith into an artfully concise and increasingly soulful sound. Opening the show will be Hayes Carll and Johnathan Rice. \n    \nFor more information on the artist visit:  http://dawestheband.com/

SUMMARY:Queer Longings: A Performative Lecture on Anna Elizabeth Dickinson's Failed Theatrical Career
DESCRIPTION:Location: Lauren K. Woods Theatre \nIn this work in progress\, solo performer Elizabeth Whitney explores the career of Anna Elizabeth Dickinson–a provocative abolitionist and suffragist who enjoyed national fame on the lyceum circuit\, was shunned by critics as a playwright and actor in late 1800s New York City\, and eventually institutionalized.  This new project uses Dickinson’s championed form of the lecture as performance to look at themes of madness\, failure\, and obscurity in the life of a queer artist. \nDr. Whitney will lead a performance workshop Thurs. 9/26 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. in Plangere 235.

SUMMARY:Aquila Theatre's Fahrenheit 451
DESCRIPTION:Location: Pollak Theatre Tickets: $25; $35
Pre-performance talk at 6:30 p.m. (free with ticket purchase) \nWith its skill at creating innovative and modern productions of great works of literature\, the Aquila Theatre will bring new life to Ray Bradbury’s visionary parable of a society gone awry. One of the most revered novels of the 20th century\, Fahrenheit 451 is Ray Bradbury’s dystopian tale of a bleak future where literature and knowledge are on the edge of extinction. Considered a work of science fiction when first published\, Fahrenheit 451 has been debated for decades – issues of censorship\, the effects of technology on society and literature\, and the means by which knowledge is gained – continue to be very real concerns today.

Before the show\, join the director and members of the cast in a discussion about censorship and the creative process of turning Bradbury’s novel into a theatrical production.

\nThis tour engagement of Aquila Theatre Company is funded through the Mid Atlantic Tours program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation with support from the National Endowment for the Arts. \n

For more information about the production visit: http://aquilatheatre.com/

SUMMARY:Ghost Hunters Live
DESCRIPTION:Since its 2004 Syfy Channel premiere\, Ghost Hunters has become television’s #1 paranormal reality series. The show is now in its ninth season and is aired in more than 170 countries. Leader of The Atlantic Paranormal Society-Jason Hawes along with fellow lead investigator Steve Gonsalves\, will now bring their experiences with the paranormal and understanding of unexplained disturbances to live audiences in their theater presentation.  Hear them talk about their scariest experiences\, see unreleased footage from the show\, and ask them questions about themselves or perhaps a ghostly experience of your own! As members of The Atlantic Paranormal Society (TAPS)\, both Jason and Steve have made it their life’s mission to help anyone with questions pertaining to paranormal phenomena and ghost hunting. TAPS is a group of fairly ordinary people— office managers\, factory workers\, teachers and even psychic-hotline gurus— moonlighting to understand seemingly unexplainable disturbances.

SUMMARY:Julian Sands (In Person) in A Celebration of Harold Pinter
DESCRIPTION:Julian Sands in A Celebration of Harold PinterDirected by John Malkovich \nWith personal anecdotes and reflections drawn from their work together\, Julian Sands (24\, A Room with a View\, The Killing Fields\, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo\, Impromptu\, Leaving Las Vegas) combines Harold Pinter’s poems and political prose to create a very fresh and intimate insight into the Nobel laureate’s literary legacy. \nIn 2005 Mr. Sands was approached by the Nobel Prize winning playwright and poet Harold Pinter to prepare a set of Pinter’s poems for a special presentation in London. Working closely with Pinter\, he was granted a rare insight into his personality\, life\, and work. This extraordinary collaboration evolved into a wonderfully humorous and fascinating solo show directed by John Malkovich titled\, A Celebration of Harold Pinter. \nThis is an evening of Homeric theater with an extraordinary actor\, great words\, and an audience.  Devoid of pretension or glittery trappings\, A Celebration of Harold Pinter gets to the soul of the man – poet\, playwright\, husband\, political activist\, Nobel winner\, mortal. A Celebration of Harold Pinter was nominated for a 2013 Drama Desk Award. \nPost Show Meet and Greet/Conversation with Julian Sands: Be sure to stay after the show for a Q&A with Julian Sands as he shares his personal stories about the great playwright Harold Pinter

SUMMARY:Bunnicula
DESCRIPTION:Lock up your lettuce! Protect your parsley! Rescue your rutabaga!  \nA floppy-eared bunny with mysterious habits is staking out its place in Theatreworks USA’s spine-tingling new musical co-written by Tony-nominated playwright Charles Busch and based on the best-selling books by James & Deborah Howe: BUNNICULA! \nChester the cat and Harold the dog get along like… Well… Cats and dogs\, even though underneath their furry exteriors\, they’re really the best of pals. But one dark and stormy night\, the Monroe family comes home from the movies with an orphaned rabbit they found under their seats. A very strange baby rabbit who has sharp fangs instead of buck teeth\, and who sleeps all day and prowls around his cage all night. \nMeanwhile\, all the vegetables in the house are drained of their color and turn white. Could this possibly be a coincidence\, or could Bunnicula be a vampire? Chester thinks so – he’ll stop at nothing until he vanquishes the new arrival\, even if it means the end of his friendship with Harold. Will Harold and Chester remain friends? Will Bunnicula find his mother before it’s too late? Will the nocturnal assault on all that is good and green continue? Find out in Theatreworks USA’s BUNNICULA! \n(One hour in length\, recommended for grades 2 – 6) \nFor more information and study sheets visit: www.theatreworksusa.org

SUMMARY:An Evening with Keller Williams and Jake Shimabukuro
DESCRIPTION:In his young career\, ukulele wizard Jake Shimabukuro has already redefined a heretofore under-the-radar instrument\, been declared a musical “hero” by Rolling Stone\, won accolades from the disparate likes of Eddie Vedder\, Perez Hilton and Dr. Sanjay Gupta\, wowed audiences on TV (Jimmy Kimmel\, Conan)\, earned comparisons to Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis\, and even played in front of the Queen of England.  In this double-header concert he is joined by singer\, songwriter and musician Keller Williams who has defined the term independent artist. Building his reputation initially on his engaging live performances\, no two of which are ever alike\, Williams’ solo live shows—and his ability to improvise to his determinedly quirky tunes despite the absence of an actual band—are the stuff of legend.
