SUMMARY:Supporting Systems and Communities in Achieving Racial Equality: A Groundwater Analysis - presented by Joyce James
DESCRIPTION:Voices for Change: Voting\, Advocacy\, and Action\nIn this presentation\, Ms. James will share her journey in developing the Texas Model for addressing Disproportionality and Disparities and the Groundwater Analysis for Addressing Racial Inequities© as the foundation for creating antiracist organizational cultures for undoing institutional and structural racism and improving outcomes for all populations. Participants will gain an increased understanding of the importance of cross systems collaborations and building partnerships with poor communities of color to remove the barriers that contribute to racial inequities. The session will include discussion of the pitfalls of well-meaning and well-intentioned leaders\, who in isolation of an analysis of institutional and structural racism\, and a racial equity lens\, continue to unconsciously contribute to sustaining and often perpetuating racial inequities in the design and delivery of programs and services.

DESCRIPTION:Click or tap for information and registration\n\nPlease join us on Tuesday\, December 14\, 2021 for the inaugural Julian Francis Abele “Out of the Shadows” Virtual Public History Symposium. \nThis event\, which is being presented virtually on Zoom from 9 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.\, is named in honor of pioneering African American architect Julian Francis Abele\, who contributed greatly to the design of Monmouth University’s Great Hall (previously known as both Shadow Lawn and Wilson Hall). \nOur first annual keynote speaker will be Dreck Spurlock Wilson\, author of Julian Abele\, Architect and the Beaux Arts. A number of other presenters will then speak about their work\, with plenty of time allocated for questions and answers. \nPlease feel free to come and go throughout the day as your schedule allows. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a World Cinema Series zoom discussion illuminating the theme “Living on the Edge: Displacement\, Identity\, and Resilience” by analyzing the message and impact of the 2018 film\, Shoplifters. \nShoplifters is a 2018 Japanese drama film directed\, written and edited by Hirokazu Kore-eda. Starring Lily Franky and Sakura Ando\, it is about a family that relies on shoplifting to cope with a life of poverty. \nShoplifters premiered at the Cannes Film Festival\, where it won the Palme d’Or. From his beginnings as an 11-year-old prodigy signed to Motown to his unsurpassed run of masterpiece albums in the 1970s\, Wonder has continually expanded the boundaries of soul and R&B. \nThis three-session virtual course taught by Kit O’Toole\, traces the artistic development from his earliest days through his 1970s “classic period” and beyond. In addition\, the class explores the chief influences on his distinctive style such as Ray Charles\, Marvin Gaye\, and Tonto’s Exploding Head Band. Three sparkling scenes accompanied by the music of three essential composers\, feature the styles of the three dance schools that have contributed to making George Balanchine a legend of modern ballet. \nThis glamorous triptych was inspired by Balanchine’s visit to the famous jeweler Van Cleef & Arpels on New York’s Fifth Avenue\, and created as an homage to the cities and dance schools of Paris\, New York and St. Petersburg that made a vital impact on the revered choreographer’s career.

SUMMARY:Who We Are: A Chronicle of Racism in America
DESCRIPTION:Documentary’s subject\, directors will be on hand for live\, post-screening discussion\n\n\n\nThe Count Basie Center for the Arts Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion Task Force\, in conjunction with Monmouth University’s Social Justice Academy and Intercultural Center\, will host a special screening of the new Sony Pictures Classic documentary Who We Are: A Chronicle Of Racism In America at 7 p.m. on Tuesday\, February 15 at the Count Basie Center’s Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre\, 99 Monmouth Street\, Red Bank. \nThe screening\, which is free and open to the public\, will be followed by a live discussion with directors Emily Kunstler and Sarah Kunstler\, along with former American Civil Liberties Union Deputy Legal Director Jeffery Robinson\, whose presentation and research on anti-Black racism and white supremacy in America provides the focus of and narrative the documentary. \nIn Who We Are: A Chronicle of Racism in America\, Robinson faces his largest audience\, asking all of us to examine who we are\, where we come from\, and who we want to be. Anchored by a 2018 performance by Robinson at New York City’s Town Hall theater\, the film interweaves historical and present-day archival footage\, Robinson’s personal story\, and vérité and interview footage capturing Robinson’s meetings with Black change-makers and eyewitnesses to history. From a hanging tree in Charleston\, South Carolina\, to a walking tour of the origins of slavery in colonial New York\, to the site of a 1947 lynching in rural Alabama\, the film brings history to life\, exploring the enduring legacy of white supremacy and our collective responsibility to overcome it. \n“Knowledge is power\,” Robinson says in a statement accompanying the film. “A false narrative about the role of white supremacy and anti-Black racism in America has led to our failure to make significant\, lasting progress on the issue of racial justice. Knowledge can change people’s views\, people’s opinions\, and their behavior.
