DESCRIPTION:Feminist theatre/performance studies scholar and artist Dr. Tessa Carr will give an artist talk about her experiences directing plays and developing devised performances with college students and in communities using a feminist ethics of care. \nArtist Talk: Monday\, March 20\, 2023\, 4:30-5:30 SC 202B \nTessa Carr serves as Associate Professor of Theatre and Artistic Director of Mosaic Theatre Company at Auburn University in Auburn\, Alabama. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in Communication Studies with an emphasis in Performance Studies and a portfolio in Women’s and Gender Studies. Her research focuses on devised performance in practice and theory\, autobiographical performance\, feminist performance strategies and performance as pedagogy. She is currently co-authoring a manuscript with Dr. Deanna Shoemaker about collaborative performance as a social justice communicative intervention. She writes\, directs\, and facilitates performance throughout the year in the mainstage season at Auburn University and with Mosaic Theatre Company.

DESCRIPTION:The author will read from her book What Happened to Paula followed by a Q&A. \nKatherine Dykstra holds an MFA in creative writing from the New School. She served as senior nonfiction editor at Guernica for many years and taught narrative nonfiction in NYU’s continuing studies program. Her essays have been published in The Washington Post\, Crab Orchard Review\, The Common\, Shenandoah\, Gulf Coast\, Brain\, Child\, Poets and Writers\, Real Simple and the Random House anthology 20 Something Essays by 20 Something Writers\, among other places. Her work has been included in the “Notables” section of both the 2015 and 2016 Best American Essays collections edited by Ariel Levy and Jonathan Franzen\, respectively. She was one of three finalists for the 2014 John Guyon Literary Nonfiction Prize. She won first place in the 2012 Waterman Fund Essay Contest and placed third in the 2013 Real Simple Life Lessons Essay Contest. \nShe was recently named an “artist to watch” by Creative Capital for her work on the Paula Oberbroeckling story\, which is the topic of her debut nonfiction book What Happened to Paula: On the Death of An American Girl\, published by W.W. Norton.  What Happened to Paula received a starred and boxed Publishers Weekly review and was designated a New York Times Summer Read\, a People magazine Best New Book\, one of Crimereads’ Top Ten Books of 2021\, a Boston Globe Book of Summer\, an Observer Best Book of Summer\, and a Crimereads Best Book of Summer. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a bilingual reading (Portuguese and English) and Q&A with Brazilian poet Salgado Maranhão and translator Alexis Levitin. \n\n \nSalgado Maranhão\nBorn in the impoverished interior of Maranhão\, in northeast Brazil\, Salgado Maranhão became one of the most prominent Afro-Brazilian poets. Twice winner of Prêmio Jabuti\, he has been awarded major prizes from the Academy of Brazilian Letters and the Writers’ Union. Five collections of his work have appeared in English: Blood of the Sun (2012)\, Tiger Fur (2015)\, Palavora (2019)\, Mapping the Tribe (2020)\, and Consecration of the Wolves (2021)\, all in Alexis Levitin’s translation. In addition to seventeen books of poetry\, he has written song lyrics and made recordings with some of Brazil’s leading jazz and pop musicians. \nMaranhão’s poetry explores\, via metaphor\, the various kinds of devastation we bring upon our lands and thus upon ourselves. \n\n\n \nAlexis Levitin\nAlexis Levitin translates works from Portugal\, Brazil\, and Ecuador. His forty-eight books of translation include Clarice Lispector’s Soulstorm\, Eugenio de Andrade’s Forbidden Words\, Astrid Cabral’s Cage and Gazing Through Water\, and five collections by Salgado Maranhão\, including the most recent\, Consecration of the Wolves. He has served as a Fulbright Lecturer at the Universities of Oporto and Coimbra (Portugal)\, The Catholic University in Guayaquil (Ecuador)\, and the Federal University of Santa Catarina (Brazil) and has held translation residencies at the Banff Center (Canada)\, The European Translators Collegium (Germany)\, and the Rockefeller Foundation Study Center in Bellagio (Italy). \n\n\nThis presentation is co-sponsored by the Department of English\, Monmouth Intercultural Center\, Institute for Global Understanding\, and Department of World Languages and Cultures

SUMMARY:What Remains: Ghost Forests\, What We Have Lost and Gained.
DESCRIPTION:Pedram Daneshgar\, Ph.D. \nClimate change induced sea level rise and storm related flooding events have had a dramatic effect on the coastal ecosystems of New Jersey. Salt water intrusion into coastal forests that are normally buffered by salt marsh ecosystems forests results in extensive tree die offs leaving behind what has been termed a “ghost forest\,” a novel marsh hybrid ecosystem filled with dead trees. Often these ghost forests are invaded by non-native species like phragmites\, which completely alter the function of the ecosystem. Pedram Daneshgar\, Ph.D.\, will share the work his lab has done exploring the Ecology of ghost forests specifically looking at how the forest communities are changed. Then he will discuss preliminary work on restoration strategies for these forests.

DESCRIPTION:A Marine Science and Policy Perspective on Offshore Wind Energy in the Mid-Atlantic Bight. Jason Adolf\, Ph.D.\, Keith Dunton\, Ph.D.\, and Professor John Tiedemann. \nThe development of offshore wind energy as an alternative to fossil fuel-based energy is happening rapidly on the continental shelf off the coasts of New Jersey and New York. However\, there is a combination of excitement and reservation among academic\, environmental and stakeholder groups surrounding this issue – while the need for non-fossil fuel energy is clear\, the potential impacts off offshore wind development on the marine environment and economy are unclear.  This session will highlight the regulatory\, permitting\, and monitoring process involved in offshore wind development and highlight the involvement of Monmouth University faculty and students in fisheries monitoring plans aimed at detecting potential impacts of offshore wind development. Non-invasive techniques such as environmental DNA (eDNA) analyses and acoustic telemetry will be discussed with regard their role in the broader picture of understanding the continental shelf marine ecosystem and potential impacts of offshore wind.

DESCRIPTION:Curator Victoria Reis\, Founder & Artistic Director of Transformer Arts Organization\, will highlight innovative contemporary platforms artists and arts organizations have initiated nationally to develop\, create\, and present art. Showcasing a range of visual art practices\, including performative\, experiential\, social\, and pedagogical\, Do You Know Where Your Art Comes From? investigates current and future models of art organizing. \nTransformer is a Washington DC based arts organization that develops multi-faceted exhibition and program platforms to advance emerging contemporary artists & arts practices. \nVictoria Reis is a curator\, writer\, and arts organizer who has been actively supporting contemporary visual artists and arts organizations within local\, national\, and international contexts since 1991. \nIn 2002\, Reis co-founded Transformer\, an internationally recognized non-profit visual arts organization based in Washington\, DC. Since 2006\, Reis has been leading Transformer as its Executive & Artistic Director\, curating and presenting substantial exhibitions and programs in support of emerging artists\, innovative cultural production\, and new & best practices within contemporary visual art. Reis has established comprehensive cultural partnerships & collaborations with an extensive range of arts\, educational\, and diplomatic organizations and institutions. She has launched and advanced the careers of several hundred artists. \nIn May 2017\, Reis expanded Transformer’s programming to include Siren Arts\, an Asbury Park\, NJ based summer residency program for emerging visual artists working within the performance art discipline. Siren Arts will be presenting its 7th season of programming summer 2023. Reis is a Founding Member of Common Field\, a national network of art spaces and artist-led initiatives. She has been a member of ArtTable since 2000. In 2018\, she joined the Board of Directors of Monmouth Arts\, a non-profit arts organization supporting artists and arts organizations throughout Monmouth County\, NJ.

SUMMARY:Jacob Landau: The Prophetic Quest
DESCRIPTION:An art exhibition that explores a range of works over a long career\, created by the American artist\, humanist\, and teacher Jacob Landau. The exhibition features a selection of some eighteen works. All are from Monmouth University’s extensive collection of Jacob Landau’s work\, comprising over 300 prints\, drawings\, and paintings. The collection was gifted to Monmouth University in 2008 by the Jacob Landau Institute of Roosevelt\, NJ. \nReception: Thursday\, April 13\, from 4– 6 pm \nAbout Jacob Landau:\nBorn in Philadelphia in 1917\, Landau launched his career as an illustrator\, winning national prizes at age 16 and a scholarship to the Philadelphia College of Art. He went on to have over sixty one-person shows\, featuring a wide range of drawings and paintings. The recipient of numerous awards\, including Guggenheim and National Arts Council grants\, many of his works are featured in permanent collections\, such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. A master teacher\, he retired as professor emeritus at New York’s Pratt Institute. In 1996\, he was awarded an honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts by Monmouth University. \nFor Jacob Landau “art enables us to see the world whole and undivided.” And at its center lies the artist’s desire for justice in this world. The current exhibit reveals that his entire career was driven by such a quest from an early work with conte crayon\, “Two Women in Market” and his “Mine Strike at Auchel” through an “Einstein” portrait\, as well as watercolor pochoirs of “Malachi” and “Isaiah” who call for justice and whose bold colors and sinuous lines derive from their respective stained-glass windows that Landau created for the Keneseth Israel Synagogue in Elkins Park\, PA (just outside Philadelphia)\, two of ten windows\, each towering 5’x20’\, that flank the prayer hall. \nLandau’s Isaiah and Malachi watercolors exhilarate\, even as they confront the viewer. We realize that the prophet does not predict the future but reveals the present\, witnessing injustice\, condemning it\, and proclaiming alternatives—actions. Clearly\, Isaiah’s words pierced the artist’s heart: “Seek justice\, relieve the oppressed.” \n And we see Landau’s struggle in his quest as a citizen of our world and as an artist in a series of sketches and preparatory drawings for his portrait of Malachi as well as those of Amos\, Hosea\, and Jeremiah. We are also given an image of a world without justice\, Ezekiel’s Vison of Dry Bones\, and a glimpse of a promised new world to come\, New Jerusalem. \n  \n
