SUMMARY:History of Slavery in New Jersey
DESCRIPTION:Class Schedule: Thursdays – Feb. 17\, Feb. 24\, and Mar. 3 | 7:30 – 9:00 PM \nThis three-session virtual course taught by Rick Geffken will cover the period of historic New Jersey slavery starting in the 1620s to the passage of the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1865. Attendees will learn that New Jersey was the last northern state to agree to abolish slavery once and for all\, after many furtive attempts. The course will highlight the enslavement of African Americans and Lenape Native Americans in Monmouth County. Runaway slave ads in newspapers\, maps\, and images of the enslaved and slaveholders will illustrate how endemic and important slavery was to the growth of the Garden State. Stories gathered from contemporary descendants of enslaved people will provide insight into a vital part of American history only now coming to public attention. Attendees will be introduced to the work of many scholars who have studied and published books on slavery in New Jersey. \nZoom Link will be provided upon registration.

From recordings that have earned him five GRAMMY® Award nominations to his Emmy nominated PBS-TV specials\, his acclaimed NPR series and concerts spanning the globe – in addition to his appearances at iconic venues such as The White House\, Buckingham Palace\, Hollywood Bowl\, Carnegie Hall and Sydney Opera House – his work as an educator and archivist define Feinstein as one of the most important musical forces of our time. \nThe most recent album from his multi-platinum recording career is A Michael Feinstein Christmas from Concord Records. The CD features Grammy Award -winning jazz pianist Alan Broadbent (Paul McCartney\, Diana Krall\, Natalie Cole). Feinstein earned his fifth Grammy Award nomination in 2009 for The Sinatra Project\, his CD celebrating the music of “Ol’ Blue Eyes.” The Sinatra Project\, Volume II: The Good Life was released in 2011. He released the CDs The Power Of Two – collaborating with “Glee” and “30 Rock” star Cheyenne Jackson – and Cheek To Cheek\, recorded with Broadway legend Barbara Cook. For Feinstein’s CD We Dreamed These Days\, he co-wrote the title song with Dr. Maya Angelou. \nHis Emmy Award-nominated TV special Michael Feinstein – The Sinatra Legacy\, which was taped live at the Palladium in Carmel\, IN\, aired across the country in 2011. The PBS series “Michael Feinstein’s American Songbook\,” the recipient of the ASCAP Deems-Taylor Television Broadcast Award\, was broadcast for three seasons and is available on DVD. His most recent primetime PBS-TV Special\, “New Year’s Eve at The Rainbow Room” – written and directed by “Desperate Housewives” creator Marc Cherry – aired in 2014.  For his nationally syndicated public radio program “Song Travels\,” Michael interviews and performs alongside of music luminaries such as Bette Midler\, Neil Sedaka\, Liza Minnelli\, Rickie Lee Jones\, David Hyde Pierce and more. \nMichael was born and raised in Columbus\, Ohio\, where he started playing piano by ear as a 5-year-old. DESCRIPTION:The Monmouth University Institute for Global Understanding (IGU) and Urban Coast Institute (UCI) will host the virtual panel discussion “Diversity\, Equity\, Inclusion\, and Ocean Justice” on March 9. The event is this year’s first installment of the Global Ocean Governance Lecture Series\, which assembles international experts to discuss scientific and policy issues that hold important implications for coastal and marine ecosystems. The discussion will be moderated by Professor Randall Abate\, director of the IGU\, and include the following presentations and speakers: \n\n“From Accounting for\, to Accountability to: Reciprocity and Restitution in Collaborative Climate Change Research” by Monica Barra\, assistant professor at the University of South Carolina School of the Earth\, Ocean & Environment and Department of Anthropology\n“Environmental Justice Impacts of Marine Litter and Plastic Pollution” by Juliano Calil\, senior fellow at the Center for the Blue Economy and adjunct professor at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies\n“Preparing the Prospective NOAA-Mission Workforce for a More Just Future” by Sharmini Pitter\, assistant director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Center for Coastal and Marine Ecosystems\n\nFollowing the presentations\, attendees will be invited to take part in a Q&A with the panel. Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin leads a starry cast\, including tenor Matthew Polenzani in the title role\, soprano Sonya Yoncheva as Élisabeth de Valois\, and mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton as Eboli. Bass-baritones Eric Owens and John Relyea are Philippe II and the Grand Inquisitor\, and baritone Étienne Dupuis rounds out the principal cast as Rodrigue. Verdi’s masterpiece receives a monumental new staging by David McVicar that marks his 11th Met production\, placing him among the most prolific and popular directors in recent Met memory.

Kariotis integrates restorative practices for a transformative learning experience and a healing centered education. Using a design thinking framework and appreciative inquiry for experiential learning\, Kariotis synthesizes art-making for social entrepreneurship. Angela is winner of a NJSCA fellowship in playwriting\, a National Performance Network Creation Fund Award\, and a Tennessee Williams Theater Fellowship. As a performance artist\, she’s been presented by venues such as UCLA\, University of Texas at Austin\, People’s Light\, Legion Arts in Iowa\, and Contact Theater in Manchester\, UK. Kariotis is Curriculum Director and Facilitator of Walking the Beat\, a national arts education program interrogating the history of police\, the way we police each other\, and ideating alternative cultures of care. DESCRIPTION:Click or tap image to view and download flyer.\n\nPatrick Radden Keefe is an award-winning staff writer at The New Yorker magazine and the author of the New York Times bestseller Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty\, a devastating portrait of three generations of the Sackler family\, whose fortune was built by Valium and whose reputation was destroyed by OxyContin. \nThe Sackler name has adorned the walls of many storied institutions—Harvard\, the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, Oxford\, the Louvre. They are one of the richest families in the world\, known for their lavish donations to the arts and the sciences. The source of the family fortune was vague\, however\, until it emerged that the Sacklers were responsible for making and marketing a blockbuster painkiller that was the catalyst for the opioid crisis. \nKeefe graduated from Columbia\, and later earned masters degrees from Cambridge University and the London School of Economics\, and a JD from Yale Law School. From portraits of his mother\, who died when the painter was only 8 years old\, to the female admirers who helped him on his road to success\, Raphael\, (1483-1520)\, was able to portray an ideal of celestial beauty\, and to focus his gaze more on the psychology of his subjects’ features than on their physical form\, so that their personalities emerge in a striking manner. Audiences will discover the life and times of one of the most influential Renaissance painters. \nEstimated runtime: 80 minutes
