SUMMARY:Roots of Rock ’n’ Roll\, Part I
DESCRIPTION:Class Schedule: Thursdays – Sept. 15\, Sept. 22 & Sept. 29 | 7:30 – 9:00 PM \nWhen the Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame nominations occur every year\, the debate ignites: just what is rock?  Instead of drawing from one genre\, rock ’n’ roll draws from several\, all combining to create a sumptuous gumbo that rapidly captured the world’s imagination. \nThis three-session virtual course taught by Kit O’Toole – the first of a two-part course – explores how gospel\, blues\, and jazz contributed to the development of the music of Elvis Presley\, Fats Domino\, Little Richard\, and much more. How gospel\, blues and jazz impacted instrumentation\, vocal style\, and composition will also be studied. In addition to multimedia presentations\, class discussion and activities will enable attendees to identify the essential elements of rock. \nZoom Link will be provided upon registration.

SUMMARY:Roger McGuinn
DESCRIPTION:As a co-founder of The Byrds\, Roger McGuinn is firmly established as an indisputable industry icon. From his signature 12-string Rickenbacker sound\, to his instantly recognizable vocals on hits like Turn\, Turn\, Turn\, Eight Miles High and Mr. Tambourine Man\, Roger McGuinn didn’t just make music; he made history. \n \nRoger McGuinn was already a veteran of the New York and Los Angeles music scenes when he co-founded the group that would become the Byrds with Gene Clark and David Crosby in 1964. Prior to forming the Byrds\, Roger toured and performed with the Limeliters\, Chad Mitchell Trio and Bobby Darin as a guitarist and banjo player. He was also the musical director on Judy Collins #3. In 1973\, the legendary Byrds disbanded and Roger McGuinn went on to make five solo albums with Columbia Records\, and continued to tour. \nIn 1995 Roger McGuinn began The Folk Den Project. He records and uploads a traditional Folk song to his website www.Mcguinn.com as an effort to preserve traditional songs. Each month a different song is added to the site accompanied with lyrics and chords for free download. \nToday\, Roger McGuinn offers shows that are as mesmerizing and magical as ever. He delivers the gift of an evening with a master that is as intimate as it is spellbinding. He’ll take you along a journey of story and song\, populated by the “old friends” you expect to hear\, as well as new acquaintances from the folk music that Roger so passionately embraces. This Grammy Award-winning artist tours the world delighting audiences with the songs and stories from his long and continually productive musical career.

SUMMARY:The Red Bank: Rum Runner - Immersive Digital Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:Award Winning local Red Bank filmmaker and Monmouth Alum will present a talk and creative workshop at Monmouth University’s ArtNOW visiting artists series. Anthony Jude Setaro and cousin Douglas Booton will discuss their creative process in-depth as they dive deeper into the local history of their family emigrating from Italy. The Setaro family left Sassano\, Italy\, their home for the last 400 years\, in 1888\, searching for a better life in America. Anthony and Doug are using Unreal Engine to bring long-forgotten ancestors back to life with an incredible level of lifelike detail. The filmmakers combine live footage\, filmed by cinematographer and producing partner Joe Minnella (Joe Minnella Studios)\, with virtual footage to transport viewers to a time of significant change in our area. \nOctober 4th \nTuesday 6pm – 7:30pm \, 30min Q&A\nLocation: The Great Hall Auditorium \nOctober 5th \nWednesday 2:45pm – 4:30pm\nLocation: IDM (Interactive Digital Media) Research Lab\, Plangere Room 135\nRSVP Required \nFor more info or to RSVP\, contact Amanda Stojanov at astojano@monmouth.edu

SUMMARY:Korkoro
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a World Cinema Series film screening/discussion illuminating the theme “Wartime Lives: Enduring and Transcending Violence and Occupation” by analyzing the message and impact of the film Korkoro (France\, 2009). \nIn this passionate WWII drama\, a tightly-knit family of Gypsies journeys through occupied France\, trying to avoid the violent Vichy patrols. Directed with wit and vigor by Tony Gatlif (Latcho Drom)\, Korkoro unearths the hidden story of the Romany people’s joys and struggles during the war. \nAlong the way a young French orphan named Claude (Mathias Laliberté) joins their ranks\, and is initiated into their culture. Under the tutelage of acrobatic wild man Taloche (James Thiérrée)\, Claude learns to love his adoptive family. As the Vichy government passes a law restricting their movement\, they avoid capture with the help of a local mayor and schoolteacher\, who also have ties to the Resistance. But the longer they avoid arrest\, the more dangerous their lives become. \nWith free-spirited humor and soaring emotion\, Korkoro is a revelatory movie about a little known chapter in WWII history. The phenomenal performances\, especially Thiérrée’s intensely physical efforts\, truly make history come alive. \nThe discussion of the film will be led by Christopher DeRosa\, Associate Professor in the department of History and Anthropology and Mihaela Moscaliuc\, Associate Professor in the department of English

SUMMARY:Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn
DESCRIPTION:Béla Fleck & Abigail Washburn\, “the king and queen of the banjo” (Paste Magazine)\, have a musical partnership like no other. Béla Fleck is a fifteen-time Grammy Award winner who has taken the instrument across multiple genres\, and Abigail Washburn a singer-songwriter and clawhammer banjo player who re-radicalized it by combining it with Far East culture and sounds.   The two met at a square dance\, began collaborating musically and eventually fell in love. Over the years\, they played together most visibly in the Sparrow Quartet alongside Ben Sollee and Casey Driessen and informally at a pickin’ party here\, a benefit there\, or occasionally popping up in each other’s solo shows. Fans of tradition-tweaking acoustic fare eagerly anticipated that Béla & Abigail would begin making music together as a duo. \nFleck has the virtuosic\, jazz-to-classical ingenuity of an iconic instrumentalist and composer with bluegrass roots. His collaborations range from his ground-breaking standard-setting ensemble Béla Fleck and the Flecktones to a staggeringly broad array of musical experiments.   From writing concertos for full symphony orchestra\, exploring the banjo’s African roots\, to jazz duos with Chick Corea\, many tout that Béla Fleck is the world’s premier banjo player.  Washburn has the earthy sophistication of a postmodern\, old-time singer-songwriter who has drawn critical acclaim for her solo albums. She has done fascinating work in folk musical diplomacy in China\, presented an original theatrical production\, and has contributed to singular side groups Uncle Earl and The Wu-Force.   In addition to being named a TED Fellow in 2012\, Abigail was recently named the first US-China Fellow at Vanderbilt University\, in addition to Carolina Performing Arts/Andrew W. Mellon Foundation’s DisTil Fellow for 2018-2020 \nOn stage\, Fleck & Washburn will perform pieces from their Grammy-winning self-titled debut as well as their new record\, Echo in the Valley (Rounder 2017).   With one eye on using the banjo to showcase America’s rich heritage and the other pulling the noble instrument from its most familiar arena into new and unique realms\, Bela & Abigail meet in the mean\, head-on\, to present music that feels wildly innovative and familiar at the same time.   Whether at home\, on stage or on record\, their deep bond\, combined with the way their distinct musical personalities and banjo styles interact\, makes theirs a picking partnership unlike any other on the planet. \n \nbelafleck.com\nabigailwashburn.com

SUMMARY:“Classical Realism” with master painter - Scott Nickerson
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit features work by painter Scott Nickerson and his core group of advanced students\, and is a great example of the powerful influence one master painter can have on a school of artists. \nScott Nickerson was born in Jersey City\, New Jersey in the fall of 1970. His passion for the art world evolved as he matured and he received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the School of Visual Arts\, New York City in 1996. Scott studied under many extremely talented instructors at SVA\, including renowned figure painter and draftsman\, Steven Assael. He continued his studies after graduation at the Art Students League\, New York City and Studio Incamminati\, Philadelphia with distinguished artist and teacher\, Nelson Shanks. \nIn 1997\, Scott began to share his knowledge and love of painting with his own students\, teaching classes at several locations across Monmouth and Ocean Counties. Many of his courses work directly from live models\, allowing the students an extensive study of each pose. When not teaching\, Scott can be found working at his Ocean Township Studio on commissioned portraits. His work is displayed worldwide in private and public collections\, including universities and government agencies. \nClassical Realism is an artistic movement in the late-20th and early 21st century in which drawing and painting place a high value upon skill and beauty\, combining elements of 19th-century neoclassicism and realism. \nOpening Reception: October 28 from 5 pm to 7 pm. RSVP for the reception here \n**Please note the gallery will be closed November 24-November 27 for the holiday weekend.***

SUMMARY:The Clay Bird
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a World Cinema Series film screening/discussion illuminating the theme “Wartime Lives: Enduring and Transcending Violence and Occupation” by analyzing the message and impact of the film The Clay Bird (Bengali\, 2002). \nThe Clay Bird is a 2002 Bengali War-drama film was written and directed by Tareque Masud. It was his debut feature film. Based on Tareque’s story the screenplay was co-written by Tareque and Catherine Masud. \nSet against a 1960’s backdrop leading up to Bangladesh’s independence from Pakistan\, THE CLAY BIRD tells the story of Anu\, a boy sent away by his father to an Islamic school. Far from his family and the warmth of his region’s Hindu festivities\, Anu struggles to break out of his shell and adapt to the school’s harsh monastic life. As the political divisions in the country intensify\, an increasing split develops between the school’s students\, just as Anu’s parents find themselves growing apart. Rather than be torn in half\, Anu must decide which side he falls upon in this complex tale of tolerance\, diversity\, and the practice of Islam in a crises-ridden world. \nThe discussion of the film will be led by Dr. Rekha Datta\, Professor in the department of Political Science and Sociology and Dr. Golam M. Mathbor\, Professor in the School of Social Work
