From his beginnings as an 11-year-old prodigy signed to Motown to his unsurpassed run of masterpiece albums in the 1970s\, Wonder has continually expanded the boundaries of soul and R&B. \nThis three-session virtual course taught by Kit O’Toole\, traces the artistic development from his earliest days through his 1970s “classic period” and beyond. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a World Cinema Series zoom discussion illuminating the theme “Living on the Edge: Displacement\, Identity\, and Resilience” by analyzing the message and impact of the 2018 film\, Shoplifters. \nShoplifters is a 2018 Japanese drama film directed\, written and edited by Hirokazu Kore-eda. Starring Lily Franky and Sakura Ando\, it is about a family that relies on shoplifting to cope with a life of poverty. \nShoplifters premiered at the Cannes Film Festival\, where it won the Palme d’Or. The film Shoplifters won three Mainichi Film Awards\, including Best Film\, and the Asia Pacific Screen Award for Best Feature Film\, and was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars and the Golden Globes. \nThe discussion of the film will be led by  Dr. Rekha Datta\, professor in the department of Political Science and Dr. Frank Cipriani\, specialist professor in the department of World Languages and Literature. \nThe film is available for streaming on a number of platforms including Vudu\, Amazon Prime Video\, YouTube\, Google Play Movies and TV\, or iTunes (for rent or purchase). \nWhen you register you will be provided the meeting link to join the conversation. DESCRIPTION:Documentary’s subject\, directors will be on hand for live\, post-screening discussion\n\n\n\nThe Count Basie Center for the Arts Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion Task Force\, in conjunction with Monmouth University’s Social Justice Academy and Intercultural Center\, will host a special screening of the new Sony Pictures Classic documentary Who We Are: A Chronicle Of Racism In America at 7 p.m. on Tuesday\, February 15 at the Count Basie Center’s Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre\, 99 Monmouth Street\, Red Bank. \nThe screening\, which is free and open to the public\, will be followed by a live discussion with directors Emily Kunstler and Sarah Kunstler\, along with former American Civil Liberties Union Deputy Legal Director Jeffery Robinson\, whose presentation and research on anti-Black racism and white supremacy in America provides the focus of and narrative the documentary. \nIn Who We Are: A Chronicle of Racism in America\, Robinson faces his largest audience\, asking all of us to examine who we are\, where we come from\, and who we want to be. Anchored by a 2018 performance by Robinson at New York City’s Town Hall theater\, the film interweaves historical and present-day archival footage\, Robinson’s personal story\, and vérité and interview footage capturing Robinson’s meetings with Black change-makers and eyewitnesses to history. From a hanging tree in Charleston\, South Carolina\, to a walking tour of the origins of slavery in colonial New York\, to the site of a 1947 lynching in rural Alabama\, the film brings history to life\, exploring the enduring legacy of white supremacy and our collective responsibility to overcome it. \n“Knowledge is power\,” Robinson says in a statement accompanying the film. “A false narrative about the role of white supremacy and anti-Black racism in America has led to our failure to make significant\, lasting progress on the issue of racial justice. Knowledge can change people’s views\, people’s opinions\, and their behavior. Runaway slave ads in newspapers\, maps\, and images of the enslaved and slaveholders will illustrate how endemic and important slavery was to the growth of the Garden State. Stories gathered from contemporary descendants of enslaved people will provide insight into a vital part of American history only now coming to public attention. The project began in Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania\, in 2016\, and the resulting exhibitions have featured many talented artists throughout the years. \nThe mission of The Souls Shot Portrait Project is to bring attention to and memorialize the lives lost and their families’ lives tragically altered due to gun violence. Vin Gopal and former New Jersey Sen. Joe Kyrillos The series will launch on March 2\, 2022 with a conversation scheduled for 11:40 a.m. to 1 p.m. The participants will include New Jersey Senate President Nicholas Scutari (D) and New Jersey Senate Minority Leader Steven Oroho (R). \nThe first discussion will focus on how civility in public discourse can lead to good public policy and outcomes. Additionally\, the two legislative leaders will discuss how they plan to engage with one another in their respective roles while demonstrating how civil dialogue has produced positive results during their tenure in public life. \nMonmouth University President Patrick Leahy will provide a welcome address and Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Pamela Scott-Johnson will provide opening remarks. \nThis free event will be available via Livestream and is open to the general public\, but registration is required. \nThis event\, which will take place in Pollak Theatre\, is accepting registrations for audience attendance but is limited to Monmouth University community members only due to current guidelines.

SUMMARY:History of Slavery in New Jersey
DESCRIPTION:Class Schedule: Thursdays – Feb. 17\, Feb. 24\, and Mar. 3 | 7:30 – 9:00 PM \nThis three-session virtual course taught by Rick Geffken will cover the period of historic New Jersey slavery starting in the 1620s to the passage of the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1865. Attendees will learn that New Jersey was the last northern state to agree to abolish slavery once and for all\, after many furtive attempts. The course will highlight the enslavement of African Americans and Lenape Native Americans in Monmouth County. Runaway slave ads in newspapers\, maps\, and images of the enslaved and slaveholders will illustrate how endemic and important slavery was to the growth of the Garden State. Stories gathered from contemporary descendants of enslaved people will provide insight into a vital part of American history only now coming to public attention. Attendees will be introduced to the work of many scholars who have studied and published books on slavery in New Jersey. \nZoom Link will be provided upon registration.

From recordings that have earned him five GRAMMY® Award nominations to his Emmy nominated PBS-TV specials\, his acclaimed NPR series and concerts spanning the globe – in addition to his appearances at iconic venues such as The White House\, Buckingham Palace\, Hollywood Bowl\, Carnegie Hall and Sydney Opera House – his work as an educator and archivist define Feinstein as one of the most important musical forces of our time. \nThe most recent album from his multi-platinum recording career is A Michael Feinstein Christmas from Concord Records. The CD features Grammy Award -winning jazz pianist Alan Broadbent (Paul McCartney\, Diana Krall\, Natalie Cole). Feinstein earned his fifth Grammy Award nomination in 2009 for The Sinatra Project\, his CD celebrating the music of “Ol’ Blue Eyes.” The Sinatra Project\, Volume II: The Good Life was released in 2011. He released the CDs The Power Of Two – collaborating with “Glee” and “30 Rock” star Cheyenne Jackson – and Cheek To Cheek\, recorded with Broadway legend Barbara Cook. For Feinstein’s CD We Dreamed These Days\, he co-wrote the title song with Dr. Maya Angelou. \nHis Emmy Award-nominated TV special Michael Feinstein – The Sinatra Legacy\, which was taped live at the Palladium in Carmel\, IN\, aired across the country in 2011. The PBS series “Michael Feinstein’s American Songbook\,” the recipient of the ASCAP Deems-Taylor Television Broadcast Award\, was broadcast for three seasons and is available on DVD. His most recent primetime PBS-TV Special\, “New Year’s Eve at The Rainbow Room” – written and directed by “Desperate Housewives” creator Marc Cherry – aired in 2014.  For his nationally syndicated public radio program “Song Travels\,” Michael interviews and performs alongside of music luminaries such as Bette Midler\, Neil Sedaka\, Liza Minnelli\, Rickie Lee Jones\, David Hyde Pierce and more. \nMichael was born and raised in Columbus\, Ohio\, where he started playing piano by ear as a 5-year-old. DESCRIPTION:The Monmouth University Institute for Global Understanding (IGU) and Urban Coast Institute (UCI) will host the virtual panel discussion “Diversity\, Equity\, Inclusion\, and Ocean Justice” on March 9. The event is this year’s first installment of the Global Ocean Governance Lecture Series\, which assembles international experts to discuss scientific and policy issues that hold important implications for coastal and marine ecosystems.
