SUMMARY:Barbera-Villegas International Social Work Lecture: Lena Dominelli
DESCRIPTION:Barbera-Villegas International Social Work Lecture\nDecember 6\, 2016\n5:30 p.m.\, Wilson Hall Auditorium \n5 p.m.\, Reception\, Wilson Hall Auditorium Lobby \n \nLena Dominelli\, Professor of Applied Social Sciences\, University of Durham\, United Kingdom\nBeyond Social Exclusion: Incorporating Environmental Justice with Social Justice\nLena Dominelli\, Professor of Applied Social Sciences and Academician in the Academy of the Learned Societies for Social Sciences\, is an experienced educator\, practitioner and researcher. Professor Dominelli is also a Co-Director for the Institute of Hazard\, Risk and Resilience Research with specific responsibility for the Vulnerability and Resilience Programme. In this latter capacity\, she endeavours to bring people together in research dialogues across the physical sciences\, social sciences\, health sciences\, arts and humanities. She is currently also the Chair of the International Association of Schools of Social Work’s (IASSW’s) Committee on Disaster Interventions\, Climate Change and Sustainability. \nProfessor Dominelli argues passionately for the realization of human freedom from social inequalities and injustices in her writings\, policy-making forums and communities seeking to change their social and physical environments. Her current research interests include: climate change and environmental social work; globalization; social and community development; social change; women’s well-being and welfare; motherhood; fatherhood; child well-being and children’s rights. \nAmong Lena’s most recent single authored books are: Social Work in a Globalizing World (2010); Introducing Social Work (2009); Anti-Racist Social Work (2008\, 3rd Edn.); Women and Community Action (2006\, 2nd Edn.); Social Work: Theory and Practice in a Changing Profession (2004). Key edited works include Social Work: Themes\, Issues and Dilemmas (3rd Edn.); Critical Practice in Social Work (2nd Edn.); and Practicing Social Work in a Complex World; (all 3 edited with R Adams and M Payne\, 2009); and Broadening Horizons: International Exchanges in Social Work (edited with W Thomas Bernard\, 2003). \nLena has received accolades for her contributions to social welfare in the international arena\, including a medal from the Social Affairs Committee of the French Senate; and an Honorary Doctorate from the Univeristy of KwaZulu Natal in Durban\, South Africa. \nAbstract to the Presentation by Professor Dominelli \nWealthy societies are becoming increasingly polarized as wealth is accumulated by a few wealthy individuals\, mainly but not all\, from the global North\, to the detriment of working class children\, women\, older people\, people from black and minority ethnic groups\, asylum seekers and refugees. Wealth distribution has become so distorted that Oxfam (2016) has published\, An Economy for the 1%\, to argue that 62 individuals hold more wealth between them than 50 per cent of the world’s population (3.6 billion people). Moreover\, 53 of this super-wealthy elite group are men. According to the Forbes list of billionaires\, the world’s richest man (Bill Gates) holds twice the wealth of the richest woman (Christy Walton). Women also hold only 24 Chief Executive Officer (CEO) positions in the Fortune 500 companies. While CEO salaries have become hugely inflated\, salaries at the bottom end have remained stagnant or been reduced. For example\, American CEOs have seen their salaries increase by 54 per cent since 2009 while salaries at the bottom have not moved. In India\, a CEO earns 416 times the salary of the average worker. Women are concentrated in the lowest-paid\, most precarious jobs\, including dangerous work in the sweatshops of the world. These inequalities have been exacerbated in Europe through what I term ‘state-induced inequalities’ whereby public expenditure cuts and privatized welfare states are becoming the norm\, and leading to rising social exclusion and inequality. Discourses about social justice are becoming marginalized\, and environmental justice is scarcely considered\, including in the post-Paris Agreement world.. The loss of re-distributive transfers through the welfare state mean that more and more people are struggling at society’s margins\, merely to survive. Substantial numbers of people rely on food-banks and begging in major\, affluent cities like London and Paris\, as institutionalized solidarity in the shape of welfare benefits as of right become harder and harder to obtain. \nIncome inequalities lead to other forms of inequalities\, including lost opportunities for the full growth and development of the talents of an individual. The ravages of a neo-liberal industrial model of development produce more losers than winners – the ‘one per cent and the rest’ as the Occupy Wall Street Movement put it. Intervening to prevent its march across the world demands a more sophisticated analysis than is evident to the public which is fed myths by a media that is dominated by right-wingers and right-wing politicians who have appropriated the words of progressive-minded individuals and turned them to their advantage. Such messages have legitimated racist discourses and intensified despair\, social protests\, loss of solidarity and empathy with those in difficulty\, and lack of hope for a future that can deliver basic rights ranging from civic to environmental rights for all peoples living within a particular nation-state. In this presentation\, I consider what social workers can do to promote a form of social justice that includes care for people\, plants\, animals and the planet in meeting human needs.

SUMMARY:Drones by Karina Aguilera Skvirsky
DESCRIPTION:Lecture: Feb. 2\, from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. in  Wilson Hall Auditorium \nOpening reception: Friday\, Feb. 2\, from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. \nDrones are in the news. They carry out targeted killings; they are manned with cameras to record movements on the ground; hobbyists fly them in public spaces; Amazon wants to use them to deliver their products. Appropriating visual juxtapositions from the surrealists and kitsch sic-fi invasion films\, Drones is a series of photo-collages that put flying objects into our aerial landscapes. \nThis series includes landscapes from US\, Ecuador and other unidentifiable locations. “The Drones” function like a photographic bricolage of buildings. The cut of a scissors and Photoshop suggest something crucial about Drones: their immediate extraterrestrial appearance places them in a space between reality and fiction mirroring our own abstract experience (via the Internet). \nBio: \nKarina Aguilera Skvirsky is a multi-disciplinary artist who works in photography\, video and performance. Her work has been exhibited internationally in group and solo exhibitions. In 2010 she participated in There is always a cup of sea for man to sail\, the 29th Sao Paolo Biennial (2010)\, where she exhibited work from her project\, Memories of Development. In 2015 she was awarded a Fulbright grant and a Jerome Foundation Grant to produce “The Perilous Journey of Maria Palacios”\, a performance based film that will premier in 2016 at the Cuenca Biennial\, Ecuador. Artist in Residence programs she has participated in include: Office Hours\, at El museo del barrio\, NY\, NY; LMCC Workspace\, NY\, NY; MacDowell Residency\, NH; Smackmellon\, Brooklyn\, NY and others. Skvirsky is an Associate Professor at Lafayette College\, Easton\, PA and an MFA faculty member at the The New School\, Parsons School of Design\, NY\, NY. She is represented by DPM Gallery\, Guayaquil\, Ecuador. \nMore about Karina Aguilera Skvirsky’s work on her website at: http://www.karinas.net/

SUMMARY:National Theatre of London: Amadeus (Live in HD)
DESCRIPTION:Please Note the time of this screening has changed to 7:00 PM. \nMusic. Power. Jealousy. Lucian Msamati (Luther\, Game of\nThrones\, NT Live: The Comedy of Errors) plays Salieri in Peter\nShaffer’s iconic play\, broadcast live from the National Theatre\, and with live orchestral\naccompaniment by Southbank Sinfonia. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart\, a rowdy young\nprodigy\, arrives in Vienna\, the music capital of the world – and he’s\ndetermined to make a splash. SUMMARY:On Screen/in Person: Hilleman - A Perilous Quest to Save the World's Children
DESCRIPTION:The Twentieth-Century was a dangerous time to be young. Before vaccines\, there were a multitude of diseases that too often kept children from reaching even their teenage years.  From the throws of that environment\, Dr. Maurice Hilleman would emerge to lead a revolution in vaccine innovation and save many millions of young lives each year. But after being forced to retire at the height of his productivity in 1985\, Hilleman watched as one company after another began to abandon vaccine research.  When parents began choosing not to vaccinate their children in the 1990s the cruel irony became clear; Hilleman’s unprecedented successes had allowed us to forget just how devastating childhood diseases could be. \nThere will be a post screening Q&A with the director Donald Rayne Mitchell. \nRun Time: 64 minutes\nOn Screen/In Person is a program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation made possible through the generous support of the National Endowment for the Arts. SUMMARY:Walnut Street Theatre’s Last of the Red Hot Lovers
DESCRIPTION:America in the 1960s\, an era that encouraged LOVE\, was populated by “Mad Men” and “Mod Women” trying to navigate the new normal. In this freshly conceived production of Neil Simon’s classic\, Last of the Red Hot Lovers\, true comedy ensues when a modern man in the hip sixties looks for something new and different\, but ends up finding himself in the same situation\, again and again…and again! \nBarney Cashman is middle-aged\, married\, overworked and overweight. It’s finally his turn to join the sexual revolution… before it’s too late. With no experience in covert maneuvers\, he arranges three attempted trysts. His targets; a bawdy bundle of fun who likes smooth whiskey and other women’s husbands\, a young actress too kooky for words\, and a neurotic housewife who happens to be married to his best friend. And through all the mishaps and laughter\, Barney begins to rediscover his humanity and what he thought was missing all along.\nLast of the Red Hot Lovers had a lengthy run on Broadway and was made into a hit film starring Alan Arkin and Sally Kellerman. \nWalnut Street Theatre\, America’s Oldest Theatre\, celebrated 200 years of great entertainment in 2009. Most noteworthy American actors of the 19th century and many from the 20th century have appeared on stage at the Walnut. Some of the Walnut’s shining stars include: Edwin Forrest\, Edwin Booth\, the Drews\, the Barrymores\, George M. Cohan\, Will Rogers\, The Marx Brothers\, Helen Hayes\, Henry Fonda\, Katharine Hepburn\, Marlon Brando\, Jessica Tandy\, Ethel Waters\, Audrey Hepburn\, Sidney Poitier\, Lauren Bacall\, George C. Scott\, Jane Fonda\, Robert Redford\, Julie Harris\, Jack Lemon\, and William Shatner. \nThe theatre has been home to many pre-Broadway try-outs of plays that would go on to become American classics\, such as A Streetcar Named Desire starring Marlon Brando\, A Raisin in the Sun featuring Sydney Poitier\, The Diary of Anne Frank featuring Susan Strasberg\, Mister Roberts\, starring Henry Fonda\, and Neil Simon’s first Broadway play\, Come Blow Your Horn. \nThe Walnut began its most recent incarnation as a self-producing\, non-profit regional theatre when Bernard Havard took the helm in 1982\, founding the Walnut Street Theatre Company with a vision of once again creating theatre in a space that is so steeped in the American theatre’s traditions and history. Today\, you can experience the realization of that dream when you attend a live performance. With over 56\,000 subscribers annually\, Walnut Street Theatre is the most subscribed theatre company in the world. For additional information about Walnut Street Theatre: Visit WalnutStreetTheatre.org. \n“Delightfully hilarious and witty\, as well as filled with wisdom about human nature…an uproariously funny author. But he is far more than that. He has a mellow and compassionate understanding of how weak and essentially well meaning mankind behaves…a genuinely brilliant play.”- New York Post

SUMMARY:Art Now: Hasan Elahi - Tracking Transience - an Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Free and Open to the Public \nHasan Elahi is an interdisciplinary artist working with issues in surveillance\, privacy\, migration\, citizenship\, technology\, and the challenges of borders. An erroneous tip called into law enforcement authorities in 2002 subjected Elahi to an intensive investigation by the FBI and after undergoing months of interrogations\, he was finally cleared of suspicions. After this harrowing experience\, Elahi conceived “Tracking Transience” and opened just about every aspect of his life to the public. Predating the NSA’s PRISM surveillance program by half a decade\, the project questions the consequences of living under constant surveillance and continuously generates databases of imagery that tracks the artist and his points of transit in real-time. Although\ninitially created for his FBI agent\, the public can also monitor the artist’s communication records\, banking transactions\, and transportation logs along with various intelligence and government agencies who have been confirmed visiting his website. \nElahi’s work has been presented in numerous exhibitions at venues such as SITE Santa Fe\, Centre Georges Pompidou\, Sundance Film Festival\, and at the Venice Biennale. Elahi has spoken to audiences as diverse as the Tate Modern\, American Association of Artificial Intelligence\, International Association of Privacy Professionals\, TED Global\, and the World Economic Forum. His work is frequently in the media and has appeared on Al Jazeera\, Fox News\, and on The Colbert Report. In addition to receiving a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2016\, his awards include grants from the Creative Capital Foundation in 2006 and Art Matters Foundation in 2011. In 2014\, he was Artist-in-Residence at Shangri-La/Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art and in 2009\, Resident Faculty at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. He is currently Associate Professor of Art at University of Maryland\, roughly equidistant from the CIA\, FBI\, and NSA headquarters. \nSee attached photo. Image credit: E. Brady Robinson
