DESCRIPTION:Alex Gilvarry is the author of the novel\, From the Memoirs of a Non-Enemy Combatant (Viking). He was selected as a “5 Under 35” nominee by the National Book Foundation in 2014 and received the Hornblower Award at the 2012 New York City Book Awards. He has been a Norman Mailer fellow and a visiting scholar at the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas\, Austin. His essays and criticism have appeared in Vogue\, The Nation\, Boston Globe\, and have been broadcast on NPR’s All Things Considered. His next novel\, Eastman Was Here\, is forthcoming from Viking/Penguin in 2016. He is the Artist-in-Residence at Monmouth University where he teaches creative writing.

Their ‘Stratagem’: to marry for money.\nLodged at the local inn\, posing as master and servant\, they encounter a teeming variety of human obstacles: a crooked landlord\, a fearsome highwayman\, a fervent French Count\, a maid on the make\, a drunken husband\, a furious butler\, a natural healer and a strange\, turbulent priest. SUMMARY:On Screen In Person: Foreign Puzzle
DESCRIPTION:Foreign Puzzle follows dancer and choreographer Sharon Marroquin as she endures intensive breast cancer treatments and explores her fear of death through the creation of a 90 minute dance titled\, “The Materiality of Impermanence.” The dance becomes Sharon’s only outlet\, allowing her to escape the daily pressures of the disease and life as a single working parent\, and shapes her perceptions about life as she fights to heal her body and mind. \nChithra Jeyaram is an award winning documentary filmmaker and educator based in Washington D.C. She is the technical instructor at the Institute for Documentary Filmmaking at George Washington University and is a master instructor at Arlington Independent Media where she teaches Documentary Production and Video Editing Courses. Her short film Mijo aired on KLRU TV\, PBS online film festival and in more than 50 film festivals around the world. Foreign Puzzle is her debut feature documentary and she is in pre-production for an interactive documentary project titled 1001 Breast Cancer Nights. She is the recipient of the 2014 Creative Arts Fellowship and BAVC National Mediamaker Fellowship for 1001 Breast Cancer Nights; 2013 Docs in Progress Fellowship for Foreign Puzzle; 2012 Commonwealth Broadcasting Association Your Worldview Documentary grant for Mijo and Dina Sherzer Award for Social Awareness for her documentary Refugee Musings. There will be a Q&A with director Chithra Jeyaram following the screening.

For three decades\, the Cowboy Junkies have remained true to their unique artistic vision and to the introspective\, quiet intensity that is their musical signature\, creating a critically acclaimed body of original work that has endeared them to an audience unwavering in its loyalty. \nJoined by multi-instrumentalist Jeff Bird\, the core Cowboy quartet returns to Monmouth for a retrospective of their three decades playing (and listening to) all manifestations of popular music. DESCRIPTION:Experience Native American culture through authentic dance\, music and ceremony when the Lakota Sioux Dance Theatre performs Ċokata Upō! Ċokata Upō! – Come to the Center is the story of the birth\, death and rebirth of a nation. The performance represents an experience the New York Times describes as a “…great sense of theatricality…a visual treat…more than a spectacle…A ritual celebration that made dancing a ceremonial act.” This three-part work celebrates the culture of the Lakota people. Set against a backdrop of spectacular video imagery and accompanied by live traditional\, sacred\, and courting songs\, narratives and creation stories are woven into the fabric of the performance. Under the direction of choreographer Henry Smith\, the company includes some of the most highly acclaimed championship performers of the Sioux Nation.

After filmmaker Jessica Vale became personally involved with Olivia and her mother while working on another project in Monrovia\, Liberia\, her quest to film them became a mission of hope and medical help in a country where rape is the number one crime\, and the majority of the victims are children. \nJessica Vale is an accomplished non-fiction television producer and editor\, working freelance for over 12 years. Originally from New Hope\, Pennsylvania\, Jess graduated from the film program at Temple University. Her credits include work for NBC News\, CBS News\, National Geographic\, History Channel\, The Weinstein Co.\, and more. Small Small Thing: The Olivia Zinnah Story is her award winning feature directorial debut which had its worldwide television premiere on Al Jazeera English. The film received high praise and Vale received substantial media attention including appearances on MSNBC’s Melissa Harris Perry Show\, Huffington Post Live and WABC NY’s Weekend Morning Show. Vale is currently post producing LIV a feature narrative by director Catherine Eaton\, as she works on her next documentary The Limits of Dissent. In summer 2014 an extraordinarily successful Kickstarter campaign raised the initial goal of $40\,000 in 24 hours\, going on to ultimately reach over $85\,000\, to bring that desire to fruition under the band name “The Pine Hill Project.” “Tomorrow You’re Going\,” an Americana masterwork of great songs\, gorgeous harmonies\, and stunning production was released in 2015. DESCRIPTION:This enchanting musical is based on C.S. Lewis’ adventure story about four children of war-torn England\, who accidentally enter the land of Narnia by climbing through a magic wardrobe. This strange and wondrous place is ruled by the cold-hearted White Witch\, who makes the winter last year round. Although they seem unlikely saviors\, the children fulfill an ancient prophecy by defeating the witch\, thus restoring sunshine and peace to the spell-bound Narnia and returning the great Lion King Aslan to his throne. \n(Approximately one hour in length\, recommended for grades 1-7) Curriculum Connections: Literature-Based\, Music\, Visual Arts.
