SUMMARY:Rare Wildlife Revealed: The James Fiorentino Traveling Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Artist James Fiorentino of Hunterdon County\, NJ\, has won national acclaim for his ability to create uncanny likenesses of people. The youngest artist ever inducted into the prestigious New York Society of Illustrators\, James uses his self-taught watercolor expression to paint some of the most recognized faces in the world\, from sports icons and presidents to Nobel Prize winners and CEOs. His award-winning art is showcased in museums\, galleries\, and private collections across the globe\, and his story has been told on national television and in the pages of magazines and newspapers. \nFiorentino uses his trademark detail and realism in watercolor to paint New Jersey’s most endangered and vulnerable wildlife species. His evocative artwork inspires viewers through his life-like depictions of rare wildlife in their natural surroundings. His paintings truly bring wildlife to life on paper\, and in doing so\, his art helps to educate and engage viewers about the precipitous declines that many of these species have undergone. \n“Though their painting styles differ\, Fiorentino is adept\, like Neiman\nwas\, at drawing\, which is of course the most fundamental skill required\nto succeed as a figurative artist. Very few wildlife artists that I know\nof can handle the human figure in convincing fashion. Fiorentino has\ndistinguished himself as a wildlife artist with skill and versatility\nthat positions him above the rest in this regard.” \nIn keeping with his expanding body of work\, James is a signature member of the Society of Animal Artists and Artists for Conservation in addition to the American and New Jersey Watercolor Societies and the Salmagundi Club. He also serves as a trustee for The Raptor Trust and D & R Greenway Land Trust\, both in New Jersey. \nRare Wildlife Revealed: The James Fiorentino Traveling Art Exhibition is sponsored by Omni Distribution\, LLC\, Flying Fish Brewing Company\, Merrill G. & Emita Hastings Foundation\, Studio 7 Fine Art Gallery\, and Somerset Patriots. \nThis exhibition is presented in partnership with Conserve Wildlife Foundation

SUMMARY:Oceanids by Joseph Coscia Jr.
DESCRIPTION:Oceanids are some 3000 nymphs in Greek mythology who watch over fresh water: rain\, clouds\, lakes\, springs and rivers\, as well as pastures\, breezes and flowers. They are the daughters of Oceanus and Tethys. Coscia\, the Chief Photographer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art has spent countless hours with classical sculptures\, photographing them in various settings and seasons. He focuses on the qualities of light on sculpture in changing conditions\, and the shifting effects of natural light on stone surfaces. His photographs of museum pieces explore elements of the art outside the context of the museum setting. \nHis recent work draws on Man Ray’s solarization techniques. This effect reverses the shadow areas and transforms the sense of weight and volume of the objects\, so that they appear suspended in air or water. The forms are evocative of earthly creatures or fossils; photographing and printing them using recreated old photographic techniques removes time specificity\, so that they also are suspended in time. \nCoscia\, Jr. received his MFA from Hunter College in 1989 and his BFA from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania in 1982. His photographs have appeared in numerous publications and museum books\, most notably Light on Stone\, a photographic essay published by Yale Press in 2004.

SUMMARY:Maunderings by Tonya D. Lee
DESCRIPTION:In this exhibition\, artist and Monmouth University Art and Design faculty member\, Tonya D. Lee presents a collection of multi-discipline work that explores the abstraction of nature and environment through the combination shapes\, patterns\, moments and pauses that are derived from passive spaces\, fleeting thoughts and changing winds. Location and process are in a conversation about ephemeral moments of beauty. Using a multi-disciplinary process of combining painting\, drawing\, collage\, construction\, and digital media\, the obsessions with materiality explore form and color as an echo of the present overlapping past presents — form and color negotiating to exist as object and subject.

SUMMARY:Wailin’ Jennys
DESCRIPTION:The Wailin Jennys are Nicky Mehta\, Ruth Moody and Heather Masse three distinct voices that together make an achingly perfect vocal sound. \nStarting as a happy accident of solo singer/songwriters getting together for a one-time-only performance at a tiny guitar shop in Winnipeg\, Manitoba\, The Wailin’ Jennys have grown over the years into one of today’s most beloved international folk acts. Founding members Moody and Mehta along with New York-based Masse continue to create some of the most exciting music on the folk-roots scene\, stepping up their musical game with each critically lauded recording and thrilling audiences with their renowned live performances. \nIn 2004\, The Wailin’ Jennys released their first full-length album 40 Days to great critical acclaim\, netting a 2005 Juno Award (Canadian Grammy) for Roots & Traditional Album of the Year. Bolstered by their frequent appearances on Garrison Keillor’s public radio show A Prairie Home Companion\, The Jennys exploded onto the roots music scene\, performing at packed venues across the Canada\, the U.S. and throughout the world.  \nThe Jennys’ sophomore album\, 2006’s Firecracker\, served as a powerful follow-up to their career-making debut. Artistically\, the record found The Jennys stepping out of the folk realm and into the world of alt-country\, pop and rock. Garnering much attention\, it was nominated for a Juno Award and won a 2007 Folk Alliance Award for Contemporary Release of the Year. Firecracker had legs\, spending over 56 weeks on the Billboard charts. \n The trio’s 2009 release\, Live at Mauch Chunk Opera House\, also spent over a year on the Billboard bluegrass charts. That landmark live album bottled the lightning of The Jennys’ live performances with show-stopping harmonies\, impressive instrumental prowess\, breathtaking songs and\, of course\, witty stage banter.  \nFor their latest album\, 2011’s Juno-winning Bright Morning Stars\, The Wailin’ Jennys joined the ranks of Lucinda Williams and Emmylou Harris and recorded with award-winning producer Mark Howard. Co-produced by frequent Jennys collaborator and Juno Award-nominated David Travers-Smith\, the album combines fresh and innovative sounds with the band’s signature harmonies — a perfect mix of Americana\, pop and traditional folk that is destined to be a modern classic. \nAlthough known primarily as an acoustic outfit\, The Wailin’ Jennys have a diverse musical background that has shaped their musical sensibilities. Soprano Ruth Moody (vocals\, guitar\, accordion\, banjo\, bodhrán) is a classically trained vocalist and pianist with a burgeoning solo career. She made a splash in 2010 with the Juno-nominated The Garden which was followed up with 2013’s gorgeous These Wilder Things. She’s  an accomplished\, versatile singer of traditional and Celtic music and as the former lead singer of Juno-nominated roots band Scruj MacDuhk. Mezzo Nicky Mehta (vocals\, guitar\, harmonica\, drums\, ukulele)\, a classically trained dancer raised on ’70s a.m. radio and heavily influenced by alternative pop\, was nominated for a Canadian Indie Music Award for her  striking debut solo album\, 2002’s Weather Vane. In July 2009 she became the proud mother to twin boys\, Beck and Finn. Alto Heather Masse (vocals\, upright bass) is a Jazz Voice graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music\, who has performed in Mark O’Connor’s Hot Swing\, Darol Anger’s Republic of Strings and is a regular guest on A Prairie Home Companion. She has also toured with her own band\, supporting her 2009 Red House release Bird Song. Her latest\, 2013’s Lock My Heart\, is an inspired album of jazz standards and originals with legendary pianist Dick Hyman. \nWith their varying backgrounds\, each of the Jennys is unique in their individual expression. Together they forge a unified folk-pop sound — all delivered with the irresistible vocal power of three. \n ”…perhaps more beautiful than ever. The Wailin’ Jennys are the darlings of the North American roots music arena.” Greg Quill\, The Toronto Star \n“Like three little birds singing softly\nand sweetly in the early morn\, the harmony of the Wailin’ Jennys\npleasantly rises from the speakers and greets the listener with a\nrefreshing start to the day.” David McPherson\, Exclaim!   \nWebsite: http://www.thewailinjennys.com/

SUMMARY:FILM SCREENING & FACULTY	LED DISCUSSION: REBIRTH OF A NATION BY PAUL D. MILLER AKA DJ SPOOKY
DESCRIPTION:To create his film Rebirth of a Nation\, Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky\, remixed D.W. Griffith’s 1915 epic film The Birth of a Nation. His re-telling of this overtly racist story depicted in the Reconstruction-era United States hurtles Griffith’s images into the 21st century. The original film was based on a novel and theater play by Thomas Dixon entitled. By applying DJ technique to cinema\, Miller’s new film parallels\, deconstructs and remixes the original. He likes to think of it as “film as found object” in the same sense that artists such as Marcel Duchamp\, Jeff Koons\, Andy Warhol and David Hammons\, among many others\, have fostered creative investigations into the idea of found objects\, cinema and “appropriation art.” \nThe event will feature a discussion led by Monmouth faculty from a variety of disciplines. Including: Johanna Foster (Sociology)\, Walter Greason (History)\, Mark Ludak (Photography) and Brook Nappi (Anthropology). The first half of the film will screen starting at 4:30 p.m. Faculty will lead a discussion in the middle of the event\, and the second half of the film will follow until 6:45 p.m. \nPaul D. Miller\, aka DJ Spooky\, is an established composer\, multimedia artist\, and author. He travels around the world performing solo\, with chamber groups\, and with orchestras\, while giving talks at prominent universities\, museums\, and conferences. His DJ Mixer app has seen more than 12 million downloads and in 2012- 2013 he was the first artist-in-residence at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. He is also the executive editor of ORIGIN Magazine. He’s produced and composed work for Yoko Ono\, Thurston Moore\, and scores of artists and award-winning films. Miller’s work as a media artist has appeared in the Whitney Biennial; The Venice Biennial for Architecture; the Ludwig Museum in Cologne\, Germany; Kunsthalle\, Vienna; The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh; and many other museums and galleries. He has been featured everywhere from CNN to SyFy. His new book The Imaginary App\, published by MIT Press\, was released in 2014. National Geographic named Miller a National Geographic Emerging Explorer for 2014/2015. \nNOTE: Miller will not be present for this event.

SUMMARY:CAROLYN DORFMAN DANCE: The Legacy Project: A Dance Of Hope
DESCRIPTION:The Legacy Project: A Dance of Hope \nAcclaimed choreographer and storyteller Carolyn Dorfman has created an exultant “dance-theatre” trilogy that connects us through our common human experience. Told through the lens of a child of Holocaust survivors\, dances illustrate the devastation\, yet inspires hope as immigrants’ journey to a new land that promises new beginnings! Our deepest desires for peace\, freedom and family are illuminated in this triumphant work that will make you cry\, laugh\, think and celebrate the capacity of the human spirit to rise above all circumstance. \nDescribed by critics as “ingenious” (The Star-Ledger) and “emotionally resonant” (The New York Times)\, the dances in the Legacy Project bring together Dorfman’s family stories\, Jewish history\, and a universal struggle for identity. Through this combination\, Dorfman inspires in her audience feelings of familiarity and unity\, creating dances that serve as metaphors for the greater truths of the human experience\, “In her works\, visual images become still photographs that capture and freeze certain universal truths…both reflect[ing] and engender[ing] a profound humanity. Because her dances are about people and life experience\, often moving from the autobiographical to the universal\, they hold immediate appeal” (The New York Times). \nAbout Carolyn Dorfman Dance\nCarolyn Dorfman Dance connects life and dance in bold\, athletic and dramatic works by Carolyn Dorfman and nationally renowned choreographers. The company’s ten multi-ethnic and stunning dancers tap their unique talents to present high-energy and technically demanding dance that unleashes the powerful storytelling and imagery of its visionary creator. This distinctive combination takes audiences on intellectual and emotional journeys that ultimately illuminate and celebrate the human experience. This is contemporary dance that moves you to think\, feel\, laugh\, cry and engage. The highly acclaimed ensemble is known for emotional resonance and artistic excellence both in performance and in its interactions with audiences\, students and the community.
