DESCRIPTION:State of Coastal and Ocean Acidification in the U.S. Mid-Atlantic\nCoastal and ocean acidification have significant scientific and societal ramifications including the alteration of ocean biogeochemistry\, ecological consequences associated with altered ecosystems\, and economic losses due to the decreased survival of commercially important organisms. Guest speaker Dr. Grace Saba\, Assistant Professor in the Department of Marine and Coastal Sciences\, Center for Ocean Observing Leadership at Rutgers University will cover what we know and do not yet know about acidification in the Mid-Atlantic. We will examine recommendations from the Mid-Atlantic Coastal Acidification Network (MACAN) to enhance regional acidification monitoring and improve understanding of potential ecological impacts. \nAbout the Speaker\nDr. Saba is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Marine and Coastal Sciences\, Center for Ocean Observing Leadership at Rutgers University. She also serves as co-coordinator for the Mid-Atlantic Coastal Acidification Network (MACAN). SUMMARY:Springsteen on Broadway
DESCRIPTION:Monmouth University\, along with the Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music housed at the university\, in partnership with Netflix\, will hold a free\, public screening of the film “Springsteen on Broadway” on Sunday\, Jan. 13 at 4 p.m. in Pollak Theatre. \nTicket reservations for the screening are available online and are required for entry. Limit of two reservations per guest. Admission of registered guests will begin at 3 p.m. on a first-come\, first-served basis; seats are not guaranteed. Non-perishable food items will be accepted in support of The Nest\, Monmouth University’s food pantry for students in need and Fulfill (formerly the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties) will also be accepting monetary donations. \nThe film screening will feature an extended introduction by Emmy Award-winner Thom Zimny\, director and producer of the film. “Springsteen on Broadway” documents Bruce Springsteen’s one-man autobiographical Broadway show following its sold-out run at the Walter Kerr Theatre in New York City that concluded on Dec. 15. The film launched globally on Netflix on Dec. 16. \nIn addition\, from noon to 3pm on the 13th in the Guggenheim library the Students Curate Bruce Springsteen Exhibit will be on display.

DESCRIPTION:Born into the world of art and design\, Mike Quon learned the ropes early on from his father who was an art director and an animator and promotional artist at Disney working on classics like Dumbo and Fantasia. After graduating from UCLA School of the Arts\, Mike launched his own career as an art director at J. Walter Thompson and Young and Rubicam before establishing his award-winning design office in New York City 30 years ago. Since then\, Mike’s bold and bright promotional illustrations for advertising and editorial campaigns\, his graphic design collateral and packaging\, and his hand-crafted logos have been seen around the world\, helping to promote events like the Summer Olympics and build lasting brand identities for consumer products\, businesses and nonprofits.

DESCRIPTION:As a universal language the arts are a very effective tool for addressing social issues. The #metoo movement has brought to the surface long ignored injustices perpetrated mostly against women for generations that are finally screaming to be remedied. SUMMARY:The Jumpsuit Project: Artist Talk with Sherrill Roland
DESCRIPTION:Sherrill Roland began his socially engaged artwork The Jumpsuit Project in 2016 and continues to use his project to ignite conversations around issues related to mass incarceration. While a graduate student\, Roland was wrongfully convicted and spent over ten months in prison. Although eventually exonerated of all charges and granted a bill of innocence\, his experiences with the justice system had a lasting effect on both his life and his artistic practice. When he returned to campus\, he wore an orange jumpsuit everyday up to and during his graduation ceremony\, encouraging all who encountered him and his jumpsuit to address their own prejudices toward those incarcerated. Through sharing his own story\, and creating a space for others to process\, question\, and share\, he sheds light on the enormous darkness incarceration brings. \nSince graduating with his MFA from the University of North Carolina in Greensboro in May of 2017\, Roland has been traveling widely to exhibit\, perform\, and discuss his experience and art. In 2017 the New York Times included Roland in their list “From the Personal to the Political\, 19 Artists to Watch Next Year\,” and in 2018 The Studio Museum in Harlem exhibited his The Jumpsuit Project\, which they acquired for their permanent collection. \nFor more information\, see: https://www.jumpsuitproject.com/
