SUMMARY:NATURE AND NURTURE - Mother/Daughter Artists: The Paintings of Cheryl Griesbach and Claudia Griesbach-Martucci
DESCRIPTION:After working almost 20 years as an illustrator with her husband Stanley Martucci\, in 2000 Cheryl Griesbach began creating a body of paintings based on her interests in European 18th and 19th century still-life\, botanical\, and landscape art. Cheryl’s painting technique was derived from Flemish painting that she had explored as a student at The School of Visual Arts where she is now on the faculty since 1985. Her method includes the manipulation of segments of Northern European paintings and incorporating that imagery in building a new landscape\, like a stage. Cheryl has received many awards\, including last year’s best in show at the Monmouth Museum’s 38th international juried awards show. \nCheryl’s daughter Claudia\, having grown up with both parents as artists\, gave her an innate inclination to explore her imagination and develop knowledge of oil painting.  Admitted into The School of Visual Arts\, her parents alumni\, Claudia in her third year first began to primarily use oil paint as her medium to illustrate the 18th century fairy tale Donkey Skin by Charles Perrault.  Claudia graduated with honors and was then accepted into the Masters Program\, Illustration as Visual Essay\, with a limited class of 20 students. With her background in Illustration and skills in using oils learned from he mother\, all of Claudia’s paintings tell a story. Her end of the year show paintings began to carve out some of the subject matter she wanted to explore\, “that behind every exquisite thing that exists there is something tragic” a quote from Oscar Wilde’s Portrait of Dorian Gray. Claudia is currently working as a painting assistant to the artist Jeff Koons\, while pursuing her own personal work.

SUMMARY:Sheba Sharrow
DESCRIPTION:Through a vigorous and poetic hand\, her work reflects on brutality and simultaneously pays homage to the animating power of solidarity\, warning us: Remember\, history’s tragedies repeat. \nBorn in Brooklyn in 1926 to Russian-Jewish immigrant parents\, Sheba Sharrow grew up in Chicago and earned her BFA at the Art Institute of Chicago\, studying with Boris Anisfeld and Joseph Hirsch. She continued her studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and earned an MFA at the Tyler School of the Arts at Temple University. She has been considered part of the “Chicago School” of imagist painters\, fitting generationally into the “Monster Roster” group of artists from that city\, including the most well-known of her classmates to lead the charge of image and ideas over pure abstraction\, Leon Golub and Nancy Spero. A resident of Cherry Hill\, New Jersey\, Sharrow died in 2006. \nIn the dominant milieu of Abstract Expressionism beginning in the 1950s\, which actively rebelled against identifiable “meaning\,” Sharrow remained grounded in a humanist tradition and a social context. Curator and writer Alejandro Anreus placed her “in the company of Kollwitz\, Beckman and Orozco\,” and writer Amy Fine Collins linked “her sensibility to German Expressionism.” \nSharrow’s unique style of storytelling and her occasional use of poetic text stand her apart. Her artistic intentions were deeply intellectual. “As long as the world is going the way it is going\, I cannot stop doing what I have been doing\,” Sharrow told The New York Times in 2002. She lamented\, “We cannot seem to get it right.” \nThe works will be on loan from both James Yarosh Associates Fine Art Gallery and the Estate of Sheba Sharrow as well as from institutions such as the Jersey City Museum of Art and private collections.

DESCRIPTION:Alena Graedon’s first novel\, The Word Exchange\, was a New York Times Editors’ Choice and Paperback Row pick\, and selected as a best novel of 2014 by Kirkus. It has been translated into eight languages. She has twice been a MacDowell Colony Fellow\n(2012 and 2017)\, and has also received fellowships at Yaddo\, Ucross\, The Virginia Center for the Arts\, The Vermont Studio Center\, and Jentel. Her nonfiction has been published in The New York Times Book Review\, newyorker.com\, The Believer magazine\, Guernica\, and Post Road among other publications. A native of Durham\, NC\, Graedon is a graduate of Brown University and Columbia University’s MFA program\, and she is an Assistant Professor of English at Monmouth University. She lives in Brooklyn\, New York.

To sign up for the waiting list please call the box office at 732.263.5715.   \nLegendary artist Graham Nash is a two-time Rock and\nRoll Hall of Fame inductee – with Crosby\, Stills\, and Nash and with the\nHollies. He was also inducted twice into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame\, as a\nsolo artist and with CSN\, and he is a GRAMMY Award winner. \nTowering above virtually everything that Graham Nash\nhas accomplished in his first seventy-five years on this planet\, stands the\nlitany of songs that he has written and introduced to the soundtrack of the\npast half-century. His remarkable body of work\, beginning with his\ncontributions to the Hollies opus from 1964 to ’68\, including “Stop Stop Stop\,”\n“Pay You Back With Interest\,” “On A Carousel\,” “Carrie Anne\,” “King Midas In\nReverse\,” and “Jennifer Eccles\,” continues all the way to This Path Tonight\n(2016)\, his most recent solo album. \nThe original classic union of Crosby\, Stills &\nNash (& Young) lasted but twenty months. Yet their songs are lightning rods embedded in our DNA\, starting with Nash’s “Marrakesh Express\,” “Pre-Road Downs” (written for then-girlfriend Joni Mitchell)\, and “Lady Of the Island\,” from the first Crosby\, Stills &\nNash LP (1969). On CSNY’s Déjà Vu (1970)\, Nash’s “Teach Your Children” and “Our House” beseeched us to hold love tightly\, to fend off the madness that was on its way. \nOverlapping CSNY\, Nash’s solo career debuted with Songs\nFor Beginners (1971)\, whose “Chicago/We Can Change the World” and “Military\nMadness” were fueled by the Long Hot Summer\, the trial of the Chicago Eight\,\nand the ongoing Vietnam war. Songs from that LP stayed in Nash’s concert sets for years including “I Used To Be A King” and “Simple Man”. His next album\, Wild\nTales (1974)\, addressed (among other issues) unfair jail terms for minor\ndrug offenses (“Prison Song”)\, unfair treatment of Vietnam vets (“Oh! Camil”)\,\nthe unfairness of fame (“You’ll Never Be the Same”)\, and his muse\, Joni\n(“Another Sleep Song”). \nThe most resilient\, long-lived and productive\npartnership to emerge from the CSNY camp launched with the eponymously titled Graham\nNash/David Crosby (1972)\, bookended by Nash’s “Southbound Train” as the\nopening track and “Immigration Man” as the closer. The duo contributed further to the soundtrack of the ’70s on their back-to-back albums\, Wind On the Water (1975) and Whistling Down the Wire (1976). \nOn the CSN reunion studio LP (1977)\, Nash took\ntop honors with “Just A Song Before I Go” (written in the space of one hour\,\nand a Top 10 hit single). Lightning\nstruck once more on CSN’s Daylight Again (1982)\, on which Nash penned\ntheir second (and final) Top 10 hit\, “Wasted On the Way\,” lamenting the energy\,\ntime and love lost by the group due to years of internecine quarrels. \nNash’s passionate voice continues to be heard in support of peace\, and social and environmental justice. The No Nukes/Musicians United for Safe Energy (MUSE) concerts he organized with Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt in 1979 remain seminal benefit events. In 2011\, Nash was instrumental in bringing MUSE back to the forefront with a concert to benefit Japan disaster relief and groups promoting non-nuclear energy worldwide. That same year\, he and Crosby were among the many musicians who made their way to the Occupy Wall Street\nactions in lower Manhattan. \nIn September 2013\, Nash released his long-awaited autobiography Wild Tales\, which\ndelivers an engrossing\, no-holds-barred look back at his remarkable career and\nthe music that defined a generation. The book landed him on the New York Times\nBest Sellers list\, and was released in paperback in late 2014. \nIn recognition for his contributions as a musician and\nphilanthropist\, Nash was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British\nEmpire (OBE) by Queen Elizabeth. While continually building his musical legacy\,\nNash is also an internationally renowned photographer and visual artist. With\nhis photography\, Nash has drawn honors including the New York Institute of\nTechnology’s Arts & Technology Medal and Honorary Doctorate of Humane\nLetters and the Hollywood Film Festival’s inaugural Hollywood Visionary Cyber\nAward. SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Weili Shi
DESCRIPTION:Weili Shi is an artist who designs through the media of digital technologies. He creates unconventional experiences with the aim of provoking people’s consciousness. In his most recent work\, Shan Shui in the World\, he transformed the information of the buildings in Manhattan\, NY\, into traditional Chinese shan shui (landscape) paintings by a custom algorithm. This project revisits the ideas implicit in Chinese literati paintings of shan shui: the relationship between urban life and people’s yearning for nature\, and between social responsibility and spiritual purity. With generative technology\, Shan Shui in the World has the ability to represent any place in the world—including the city where the audience is—in the form of a shan shui painting. SUMMARY:Colin Hay
DESCRIPTION:As the singer\, guitarist\, and main songwriter of Australia’s Men At Work\, Colin Hay was responsible for penning several of the quirkiest pop hits of the early ’80s including “Overkill”\, “(The Land) Down Under”\, “It’s A Mistake” and “Who Can IT Be Now” Although forever associated with “the land down under”\, Hay hailed from Scotland but relocated to Australia in 1967. After Men At Work’s rise\, demise and a period of reflection\, Hay embarked on a solo career\, debuting in 1987 with Looking For Jack (the title of which supposedly referred to a brief encounter Hay had with actor Jack Nicholson). Hay continued to release critically acclaimed solo material with regularity throughout the 2000’s\, including Wayfaring Sons\, Peaks & Valleys\, Topanga\, 1998’s Transcendental Highway\, 2007’s Are You Lookin’ at Me?\, American Sunshine\, 2011’s Gathering Mercury\, which was followed in 2015 by Next Year People.  \nHay contributed “I Just Don’t Think I’ll Ever Get Over You” to the soundtrack of Garden State and has had roles in other cult movies such as Cosi and television shows such as Scrubs\, The Larry Sanders Show\, JAG\, The Mick Molloy Show and What About Brian. Hay has also been a member of Ringo Starr’s eighth and tenth All-Starr Bands. In 2017 Hay recorded and released his 13th solo album\, Fierce Mercy\, an epic\, cinematic step forward from the singer-songwriter who has become increasingly known for his wonderfully witty and intimate performances as well as his ever-present great voice and incisive song writing .  \nThe range of artists who have chosen to cite him as a muse is vast and varied and include the likes of Metallica and The Lumineers\, reflecting his continuing relevance and broad appeal.Presented by UMT presents

DESCRIPTION:Alicia Ostriker is a poet and critic\, author of seventeen collections of poetry\, most recently The Book of Seventy (winner of the National Jewish book Award)\, The Old Woman\, the Tulip and the Dog\, and Waiting for the Light.  She has received the Paterson Poetry Prize\, the San Francisco State Poetry Center Award\, the William Carlos Williams Award\, and has been twice nominated for the National Book Award\, among other honors.    As a critic she is the author of Stealing the Language; the Emergence of Women’s Poetry in America\, and other books on poetry and on the Bible.  She is distinguished Professor Emerita of Rutgers University\, teaches in the low-residency Poetry MFA program at Drew university\, and is currently a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. This event is part of the Jewish Cultural Studies Program.

DESCRIPTION:Step up for the “Boot Camp” at Monmouth University – an immersion program for Nurse Practitioners providing specialized training in key areas. The hands-on experience will be facilitated by content experts who will share knowledge\, tips and techniques for practice. The boot camp is suitable for individuals who would like to update their knowledge and/or who are new to the role. \nParticipants will complete 2 modules daily of the total 4 listed below.
