She is the author of the novels Two Girls\, Fat and Thin\, and Veronica\, which was nominated for the 2005 National Book Award\, National Critic’s Circle Award\, and L.A. Times Book Award. She is the author of the story collections Bad Behavior and Because They Wanted To\, which was nominated for the PEN/Faulkner in 1998. Bad Behavior\, now a classic\, made critical waves when it was first published\, heralding Gaitskill’s arrival on the literary scene and established her as one of the sharpest\, erotically charged\, and audaciously funny writing talents of contemporary literature. Her newest collection of stories is titled Don’t Cry (2009):Written with her distinctive\, uncanny combination of bluntness and high lyricism\, Don’t Cry takes its place among artworks of great moral seriousness.” [Bomb Magazine] \nMary Gaitskill was born in 1954 in Lexington\, Kentucky. In telling the tale of this large and complex event\, this Theatreworks show focuses on the smaller stories of some of the soldiers who are caught up in it\, including\, Zak\, a runaway slave who demands the right to fight his own fight; Will\, his former best friend and “master;” Johnny\, an Irish immigrant who volunteers to defend his new home; and Jackie\, a girl who becomes a drummer boy. \nWritten by the playwright behind Theatreworks USA’s The Great Railroad Race\, Footprints on the Moon\, and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn\, this stirring production features traditional songs of the era while sensitively illustrating this complex\, tumultuous chapter of American history. The Civil War illuminates the humanity and sacrifices of those who fought\, and the many who died. \nAppropriate for Grades 3 – 9

April 17 | 5 p.m. by Dr. David Herrstrom\, President of the Jacob Landau Institute\nGallery Hours: Monday – Friday 9 a.m. – 7 p.m.\nDocent tours are available. \nThe exhibition features a selection of 32 pieces from Monmouth University’s extensive collection of Jacob Landau’s work\, which is comprised of over 300 prints\, drawings\, and paintings. The collection was gifted to Monmouth University in 2008 by the Jacob Landau Institute of Roosevelt\, NJ. \nBorn in Philadelphia in 1917\, Jacob Landau launched his career as an illustrator\, winning national prizes at age 16 and a scholarship to the Philadelphia College of Art. He had over sixty one-person shows and was the recipient of many awards\, including Tiffany\, Guggenheim and National Arts Council grants. Many of his works are featured in permanent collections in the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York\, among others. A master teacher\, he retired as professor emeritus at New York’s Pratt Institute. In 1996\, he was awarded an honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts by Monmouth University. \nLandau\, who died in 2001\, won praise for his “humanist” approach to art\, which explored the basic themes of human existence and morality\, according to Institute president David Herrstrom. Having lived through the Great Depression\, Landau faced tough times and human cruelty\, influences that can be seen throughout his works. Herrstrom explains that “As a humanist\, Landau was committed to the belief that art must do more than entertain or please. Creating inner conflict\, art can precipitate a small crisis of perception or conscience in us and contribute to human growth.” \nDates/Times docents will be in the gallery to give guided tours: \nFri. DESCRIPTION:Cost: $42/$32 \nFrom our nation’s capital comes the troupe known as “the first\nprofessional dance company in the world dedicated to the tradition of stepping”\n— and if that bears further explanation\, you should know that stepping is a\ncentury-long dance tradition that was developed and perfected by the members of\nAfrican American college fraternities and sororities. It’s a form that drew\nfrom traditional African disciplines to create a mode of expression that uses\nthe whole body — in all of its tapping\, clapping\, spoken-word yapping\nversatility — to convey a sense of community through sound and movement. \nTraveling the world as official cultural ambassadors of the\nUnited States — and riding a resurgent wave of interest in this exciting “new”\ndance form — the nonprofit Step Afrika! company conducts an annual tour of\ncolleges and universities across the country.
