DESCRIPTION:National Theatre Live’s 2010 broadcast of Frankenstein returns to\ncinemas as part of the National Theatre’s 50th anniversary celebrations. \nFrankenstein\n enjoyed a sell-out run at the National Theatre\, and went on to win\nawards including the 2012 Olivier Award for Best Actor for Benedict\nCumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller.  \nOscar-winner Danny Boyle\n(Trainspotting\, Slumdog Millionaire) directs a sensational production.\nIn this encore screening Benedict Cumberbatch (Star Trek: Into Darkness\,\n BBC’s Sherlock) plays Dr. Frankenstein and Jonny Lee Miller\n(Trainspotting\, CBS’s Elementary) his creation.  \nChildlike in his\ninnocence but grotesque in form\, Frankenstein’s bewildered creature is\ncast out into a hostile universe by his horror-struck maker. Meeting\nwith cruelty wherever he goes\, the friendless Creature\, increasingly\ndesperate and vengeful\, determines to track down his creator and strike a\n terrifying deal. DESCRIPTION:Location: Pollak Theatre \nPresident Obama’s Inaugural Poet\, Richard Blanco was made in Cuba\, assembled in Spain\, and imported to the United States—meaning his mother\, 7 months pregnant\, and the rest of the family arrived as exiles from Cuba to Madrid where he was born. Only 45 days later\, the family emigrated once more and settled in Miami. His acclaimed first book of poetry\, City of a Hundred Fires\, explores the yearnings and negotiation of cultural identity as a Cuban- American\, and received the Agnes Starrett Poetry Prize. His second book\, Directions to The Beach of the Dead\, won the Beyond Margins Award from the PEN American Center for its continued exploration of the universal themes of cultural identity and homecoming.

DESCRIPTION:The films that become the centerpiece of the Black Maria Film and Video Festival honor the vision of Thomas Edison\, New Jersey inventor and creator of the motion picture.  It was his New Jersey studio\, the world’s first\, which he called the “black maria” (pronounced “mariah”) after which the festival is named.  The cutting edge\, cross-genre work that makes up the festival’s touring program\, has been traveling across the country every year for decades.  Black Maria focuses on diverse short films – narrative\, experimental\, animation\, and documentary – including those which address issues and struggles within contemporary society such as the environment\, public health\, race and class\, family\, sustainability\, and much more. These exceptional works ranging from comedy to drama to the exploration of pure form in film and video are not sidebars to feature length films\, they are the heart and soul of the festival. In her final moments\, she imagines her fate in the hands of the surrounding townspeople.Close the Lid\, Gently: A Home Document Scan – Jury’s Choice5.5 min. by Ariana Gerstein\, Barton\, NY.A video made entirely from two home desktop scanners – one a photo scanner\, the other a refurbished low-end document scanner. Each has its own texture and sees the domestic environment in its own particular way\, one scan at a time. This piece deals with the deliberate misuse/re-purposing of commercial image producing machines for a slow\, individual\, low tech\, approach to the motion picture making process.The Apothecary – Jury’s Choice17 min. by Helen Hood Scheer\, Palo Alto\, CA.A moving portrait of beloved druggist\, Don Colcord\, in a rural Colorado outpost. SUMMARY:Contemporary Chinese Sound Art and the Politics of Equality
DESCRIPTION:Location: Young Auditorium\, Bey Hall \nContemporary Chinese Sound Art and the Politics of Equality (Lecture and discussion)\nProf. Andrew Demirjian\, Department of Communication\nXiaoying Yuan\, Independent Art Curator \nSince its import into China\, the evolution of and the practice of Sound Art\, like the art of New Media\, has been completely re-shaped by the political system\, social structure\, and market economy of contemporary China. Sound Art in China – as it’s been greatly affected by the local culture – has very little in common with its original reference in Western art history. In a classroom colloquium format\, media art curator Xiaoying Yuan will discuss artists in contemporary China who work with sound as their medium and the issues of equality they encounter from a social\, political\, and institutional perspective. During her presentation she will play excerpts of compositions and video documentation of influential performances of this vibrant and extremely creative experimental art community that has limited access to gain the attention of Western art media. \nAbout the Lecturer\nXiaoying Juliette Yuan holds a Master of Generative Literature from Paris III (la Sorbonne Nouvelle\, Paris\, France)\, and is currently a Ph.D. candidate at Planetary Collegium (University of Plymouth\, UK)\, under the direction of Roy Ascott. She has worked in the media arts field since 2004\, and is one of the most active figures in the Chinese media arts scene. \nHer accomplished projects include international exhibitions\, conferences and workshops. Her collaborators include governmental institutions\, academies\, museums\, festivals\, private institutions\, and foundations\, both in China and overseas. She is also an active editor and writer\, and has widely published surveys and critiques in mainstream Chinese and international magazines.
