DESCRIPTION:The California-based roots rock band composed of brothers Taylor (guitars and vocals) and Griffin Goldsmith (drums)\, along with Wylie Gelber (bass) and Tay Strathairn (keyboards)\, was heavily influenced by the gentle\, acoustic-based musical trappings and rich vocal harmony of the Laurel Canyon sound (Crosby\, Stills & Nash\, Neil Young\, Joni Mitchell)\, as well as by the shambling\, romanticized Americana of The Band. Last fall they found themselves traveling East to record their third album in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. The tracks they laid down at Asheville’s Echo Mountain Studio have yielded a 12-song disc of tremendous sonic and narrative clarity. Stories Don’t End spotlights the group’s maturing skills as arrangers\, performers\, and interpreters who shape the raw material supplied by chief songwriter and lead vocalist Taylor Goldsmith into an artfully concise and increasingly soulful sound. Woods Theatre \nIn this work in progress\, solo performer Elizabeth Whitney explores the career of Anna Elizabeth Dickinson–a provocative abolitionist and suffragist who enjoyed national fame on the lyceum circuit\, was shunned by critics as a playwright and actor in late 1800s New York City\, and eventually institutionalized.  This new project uses Dickinson’s championed form of the lecture as performance to look at themes of madness\, failure\, and obscurity in the life of a queer artist.  \nDr. Whitney will lead a performance workshop Thurs. 9/26 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. in Plangere 235.

Pre-performance talk at 6:30 p.m. (free with ticket purchase) \nWith its skill at creating innovative and modern productions of great works of literature\, the Aquila Theatre will bring new life to Ray Bradbury’s visionary parable of a society gone awry. One of the most revered novels of the 20th century\, Fahrenheit 451 is Ray Bradbury’s dystopian tale of a bleak future where literature and knowledge are on the edge of extinction. Considered a work of science fiction when first published\, Fahrenheit 451 has been debated for decades – issues of censorship\, the effects of technology on society and literature\, and the means by which knowledge is gained – continue to be very real concerns today.

Before the show\, join the director and members of the cast in a discussion about censorship and the creative process of turning Bradbury’s novel into a theatrical production.

Hailed as an internationalist and a humanist\, Tagore bridges the East and West through his music\, poetry\, and writings and celebrates life in unison with God\, Nature\, Love\, Peace\, and Humanity. \n \nThrough a creative interpretation of Tagore’s poetry and music\, Prabuddha Raha\, a noted Rabindrasangeet artiste from Calcutta\, India\, will perform as part of this program. DESCRIPTION:Location:Wilson Auditorium \nJan Beatty’s fourth full-length book\, The Switching/Yard\, was published by the University of Pittsburgh Press in February\, 2013. A limited edition chapbook\, Ravage\, was published by Lefty Blondie Press in 2012. Other books include Red Sugar\, finalist for the 2009 Paterson Poetry Prize; Boneshaker\, finalist\, Milton Kessler Award; Mad River\, Agnes Lynch Starrett Prize—all published by the University of Pittsburgh Press. Her chapbook\, Ravenous\, won the 1995 State Street Prize. \nOther awards include the $15\,000 Creative Achievement Award in Literature from the Heinz Foundation\, the Pablo Neruda Prize for Poetry\, Discovery/The Nation Prize finalist\, and two fellowships from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. Individual poems have appeared in journals such as TriQuarterly\, Gulf Coast\, Court Green\, and Best American Poetry 2013. Her poetry has appeared in anthologies published by Autumn House Press\, Coffee House Press\, Houghton Mifflin\, Oxford University Press\, University of Illinois Press\, Kent State University Press\, and the University of Iowa Press. Beatty’s work has earned writing fellowships at the Santa Fe Arts Institute; the MacDowell Colony; Ragdale; the Montana Artist Refuge; Jentel\, Wyoming; Ucross\, Wyoming; Hedgebrook\, Washington; Whooping Crane Trust\, James L. Grahl Research Center; and Leighton Studios at Banff\, Alberta\, Canada. Her essays on writing have appeared in anthologies by Autumn House Press\, Creative Nonfiction\, and The State University of New York Press. She has read her work widely\, at venues such as the Los Angeles Times Book Festival\, the Geraldine R. Dodge Festival\, Split This Rock Poetry Festival\, Sarah Lawrence College\, and the KGB Bar in New York City. \nBeatty worked as a waitress for fifteen years\, and as a welfare caseworker\, an abortion counselor\, and a social worker and teacher in maximum-security prisons. She is the managing editor of MadBooks\, a small press that has published a series of books and chapbooks by women writers. For the past twenty years\, Beatty has hosted and produced Prosody\, a public radio show on NPR affiliate WESA-FM featuring the work of national writers. She has lectured in writing workshops across the country\, and has taught at the university level for over twenty years at the University of Pittsburgh\, Carnegie Mellon University\, and Carlow. Beatty directs the creative writing program at Carlow University\, where she runs the Madwomen in the Attic writing workshops and teaches in the MFA program.

DESCRIPTION: Thurs. Oct 17 \n The Mac Varsity Club 301 & 302 | 6 p.m. \nOur workshop empowers participants\nto create and upload photographic documentation of\noverlooked communities to Google maps\, building a public document of\nthe community from within. The half day workshop can be adapted for any age\nand participants may use any level of digital camera. We begin with a\nshort presentation on work with locative media and conceptual\ndocumentary projects. Participants then are given a shooting\nassignment based on local areas absent or overlooked in Google\nStreetView. Woods Theater \nThe Laramie Project by Moises Kaufman and the Tectonic Theatre ProjectNov 7- 9 & 13-16 at 8 p.m. Nov. 10 at 3 p.m. \nIn 1998\, University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard was murdered near the outskirts of Laramie. The ensuing investigation led to the conclusion that he had been tortured because he was gay. Reaction to the event led members of the Tectonic Theatre Project to conduct hundreds of interviews with inhabitants of Laramie and turn their comments and thoughts\, combined with news reports\, into a play which has been performed across the nation and was made into a 2002 HBO film. The play features a small number of actors performing the exact words of more than 60 characters from the town\, the media\, and the original actors themselves.Presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service

She still proudly identifies as a folksinger\, too\, but her understanding of that term has always been far more expansive than a bin at the record store or a category on iTunes\, with ample room for soul\, funk\, jazz\, electronic music\, spoken word\, and a marching band or two. Over the course of more than 20 albums\, including the live double-CD Living in Clip (1997) and the two-disc career retrospective Canon (2007)\, as well as her latest\, Which Side are You On (2012)\, Ani has never stopped evolving\, experimenting\, testing the limits of what can be said and sung.
