SUMMARY:Visiting Writer: Brooks Haxton
DESCRIPTION:Brooks Haxton was born in Greenville\, Mississippi\, in 1950. His books include six collections of poems from Knopf\, two book-length narrative poems\, and one book of creative non-fiction. He has also written introductions to five books\, essays\, and the script of an American Masters Series film on Tennessee Williams\, nationally broadcast on PBS. Since the mid-seventies\, his poems and prose have been appearing in Atlantic Monthly\, New Republic\, The New York Times Book Review\, The New Yorker\, and Paris Review. His work has been acclaimed by critics at All Things Considered\, The New York Times\, Newsweek Online\, Time Magazine\, The Village Voice\, and The Washington Post. His four books of translations from Classical Greek\, French\, and German have included an alternate selection for the Book-of-the-Month Club. He has received awards and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts\, the National Endowment for the Humanities\, and the Guggenheim Foundation\, among others. In 2013 the Fellowship of Southern Writers presented him with the Hanes Award\, recognizing a distinguished body of work by a poet in mid-career. He lives with his wife and children in Syracuse\, where he has taught for twenty years at Syracuse University.

DESCRIPTION:Songwriters By The Sea hosts\, and accomplished New Jersey songwriters\, Joe D’Urso and Joe Rapolla\, bring their popular songwriters series to the historic Lauren K. Woods Theater. The series began as an intimate\, casual coffeehouse jam in Asbury Park\, NJ and has evolved into a regional and national show. From her uncompromising book\, winner of the National Book Award for Non-Fiction 2012\, David Hare has fashioned a tumultuous play on an epic scale. India is surging with global ambition. But beyond the luxury hotels surrounding Mumbai airport lies a makeshift slum\, full of people with plans of their own. Zehrunisa and her son Abdul aim to recycle enough rubbish to fund a proper house. Sunil\, twelve and stunted\, wants to eat until he’s as tall as Kalu the thief. Asha seeks to steal government anti-poverty funds to turn herself into a ‘first-class person’\, while her daughter Manju intends to become the slum’s first female graduate.  But their schemes are fragile; global recession threatens the garbage trade\, and another slum-dweller is about to make an accusation that will destroy herself and shatter the neighbourhood.

DESCRIPTION:At once entertaining and deeply insightful\, Tie It Into My Hand is an unprecedented look at the life of an artist\, told entirely through interviews with pre-eminent directors\, filmmakers\, visual artists\, writers and performers\, including Alan Cumming\, Barbara Hammer\, and Harold Bloom\, among many others. The filmmaker sets his interactions with the artists in the context of a fake violin lesson while using his personal struggle to play the violin despite a chronic hand injury as the catalyst for dialogue. \nThere will be a Q&A with the film’s director Director Paul Festa directly after the film. \nOn Screen/In Person is made possible by Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation through the generous support of the National Endowment for the Arts’ Regional Touring Program.

SUMMARY:ART NOW: Wafaa Bilal
DESCRIPTION:2:30 – 3:15 artist lecture – Wilson Auditorium\n3:30 – 4:15 video screening/extended Q &A – Rechnitz Hall room 208. \nIraqi-born artist Wafaa Bilal\, an Associate Arts Professor at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts\, is known internationally for his on-line performative and interactive works provoking dialogue about international politics and internal dynamics. For his 2007 installation\, Domestic Tension\, Bilal spent a month in a Chicago gallery with a paintball gun that people could shoot at him over the internet. The Chicago Tribune called it “one of the sharpest works of political art to be seen in a long time ”and named him 2008 Artist of the Year. Bilal’s work is constantly informed by the experience of fleeing his homeland and existing simultaneously in two worlds – his home in the “comfort zone” of the U.S. and his consciousness of the “conflict zone” in Iraq. Using his own body as a medium\, Bilal continues to challenge our comfort zone with projects like 3rdi and …And Counting. In 2008 City Lights published “Shoot an Iraqi: Art\, Life and Resistance Under the Gun\,” about Bilal’s life and the Domestic Tension project. He holds a BFA from the University of New Mexico and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art\, Los Angeles\, CA; Museum of Contemporary Photography\, Chicago\, IL; MATHAF: Arab Museum of Modern Art\, Doha\, Qatar; amongst others.
