SUMMARY:Bolshoi Ballet: The Pharaoh’s Daughter
DESCRIPTION:Music Cesare\nPugni \nLibretto Jean-Henry\nSaint-Georges and Marius Petipa \nChoreography\, sets and costumes Pierre Lacotte \nCast Svetlana\nZakharova (Aspicia)\, Ruslan Skvortsov (Lord Wilson) and Nina Kaptsova (Ramze\,\nAspicia’s slave) \nYoung Englishman Lord\nWilson is travelling through Egypt when a powerful storm breaks out. He is\nforced to take shelter in the nearest pyramid\, where the daughter of one of\nEgypt’s most powerful pharaohs lies entombed. Lord Wilson falls asleep and\nbegins to dream that the princess has come to life.   \nThe plot of this lavish\nproduction is loosely based on Théophile Gauthier’s novel  Le Roman de la Momie. French choreographer\nPierre Lacotte was exclusively commissioned in 2000 by the Bolshoi Theatre to\nresurrect Marius Petipa’s mighty Egyptian fresco\, and he succeeded brilliantly\nin giving new life to this forgotten masterpiece. With its exotic setting\,\nimpressive parades\, spectacular variations and crowd scenes\, this grand 19th‐century Orientalist fantasy is one of the most\nremarkable productions in the Bolshoi’s repertoire. The main roles are here\ndanced by Bolshoi principals Svetlana Zakharova\, Nina Kaptsova and Ruslan\nSkvortsov. \n \nRunning\ntime 2h30

SUMMARY:National Theatre of London: JOHN
DESCRIPTION:Internationally renowned DV8 Physical Theatre bring their powerful new production to the National Theatre.\nDV8 Physical Theatre has produced 18 highly acclaimed dance-theatre works and four films for television\, which have garnered over 50 national and international awards. The company’s new production\, JOHN\, authentically depicts real-life stories\, combining movement and spoken word to create an intense and moving theatrical experience. \nLloyd Newson\, DV8’s Artistic Director\, interviewed more than 50 men asking them frank questions\, initially about love and sex. One of those men was John. What emerged was a story that is both extraordinary and touching. Years of crime\, drug use and struggling to survive lead John on a search in which his life converges with others\, in an unexpected place\, unknown by most. Don’t miss this eagerly anticipated new production\, broadcast live from the National Theatre. \nJOHN contains adult themes\, strong language and nudity. Suitable for 18yrs+.

SUMMARY:Bolshoi Ballet: La Bayadère (Broadcast in HD)
DESCRIPTION:Music Ludwig MinkusLibretto Marius Petipa and Sergei KhudekovOriginal choreography Marius PetipaNew version Yuri Grigorovich Broadcast in HD \nCast Svetlana Zakharova (Nikiya)\, Maria Alexandrova (Gamzatti) and Vladislav Lantratov (Solor) \nWhen the beautiful dancer Nikiya and the warrior Solor meet in secret\, they swear eternal mutual fidelity. However\, the High Brahmin\, who is also in love with Nikiya\, overhears them. He rushes to reveal their secret to the Rajah\, who has decided that Solor will marry his beloved daughter Gamzatti. La Bayadère (the word refers to an Indian temple dancer) is a key work in the classical repertoire and this is a magnificent production. The story of impossible love between Nikiya and Solor is set against the backdrop of a lush\, mysterious India. Marius Petipa’s choreography\, here in a new scenic version by Yuri Grigorovich\, is exquisite; the scene known as The Kingdom of the Shades is one of the most celebrated in the history of ballet. Bolshoi principals Svetlana Zakharova and Maria Alexandrova bring the characters of this romantic ballet to life. \n(Ballet recorded live on January 27th\, 2013) Running time 2h45
