SUMMARY:New Stories for the Anthropocene: Artist Talk with Elizabeth Demaray
DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Demaray is an artist who focuses on the interface between the built and the natural environment. In this vein\, she builds listening stations for birds that play human music\, cultures lichen on the sides of skyscrapers in New York City\, and designs alternative forms of housing for land hermit crabs. These artworks often involve the concept of a biotope\, which is a small environment where human and non-human populations overlap. \nWhile in residence at Monmouth University\, Demaray will present these projects and will lead a workshop on non-anthropocentric design. She will also be pairing with the campus to create a community-based project that embraces the idea of “trans-species giving.” According to Demaray\, the concept of trans-species giving asserts that the commonalities between life forms are such that we may actually be able to give other organisms a “hand up\,” notwithstanding our own cultural or species-specific assumptions about the natural world. \nDemaray is the recipient of the National Studio Award from the New York Museum of Modern Art/P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center and the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Sculpture\, and was the featured artist at the 2014 Association of Environmental Science Studies symposium\, Welcome to the Anthropocene. She lives and works in Brooklyn\, New York\, and is an associate professor of fine arts and head of the sculpture concentration at Rutgers University\, Camden. On the Rutgers\, New Brunswick\, campus\, she is a work group advisor in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering and an advisor at The Art and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at Rutgers University\, in the Department of Computer Science\, which is dedicated to supporting artistic practice in the fields of computer vision and machine learning. \nDemaray’s work can be seen at: https://elizabethdemaray.org

DESCRIPTION:The play is set in the backyard of two adjoining houses in the working class neighborhood of South Philadelphia. They are about to celebrate the 21st birthday of Francis Geminiani\, a Harvard student\, when two classmate friends from Harvard and Yale\, Judith and Randy\, show up unexpectedly. Since there isn’t a spare bedroom in either house they pitch a tent in the backyard. Francis’ classmates\, the wealthy Judith seeks romance with Francis not realizing that her brother Randy is the object of Francis’ unexpressed affection. Each of the characters in the play are dysfunctional to some degree and their celebration of Francis’ birthday brings out the best of comedy and drama. The birthday party is a series of comic incidents that provide laughter and serious realizations that lead up to the final joyous ending. The crazy fast moving celebration leaves each character a bit wiser and happier having celebrated Francis’ 21st birthday.

They are one of those rare bands who produce great-sounding recordings… and sound even greater live.” -Kevin Coughlon \nSpecial guest vocalist Marshall Crenshaw will be joining Jim Babjak\, Dennis Diken and Mike Mesaros of The Smithereens. \nKnown for their catchy 1960s-influenced power pop that inspired countless alternative rockers\, The Smithereens gained popularity with “11” the album that spawned college campus favorites “A Girl Like You”\, “Blood and Roses” & “Blue Period”. In April of 2011 Smithereens released “2011” their first album of new material in 12 years. Produced by Don Dixon (who helmed “Especially For You”\, the group’s breakout debut)\, the seminal New Jersey rockers picked up right where they left off: with irresistibly catchy hooks and rapturously fuzzed-out guitars. Now they’re back on the road with their catalog of classic hits as well as new favorites. Following the sad passing of lead vocalist Pat DiNizio in 2017\, original members Jim Babjak (guitar & vocals)\, Dennis Diken (drums & percussion) and Mike Mesaros on bass guitar carry on the Smithereens legacy. \nOver the course of a recording career that’s spanned three decades\, 13 albums and hundreds of songs\, Marshall Crenshaw’s musical output has maintained a consistently high level of artistry\, craftsmanship and passion\, endearing him to a broad and loyal fan base. DESCRIPTION:This event is intended to educate the state’s legal and policy communities and the public on local climate impacts and associated costs now facing communities and taxpayers\, and to initiate a dialogue on the growing trend of climate damages litigation in the U.S. Panelists will discuss the extent of climate harms in New Jersey as well as the scientific basis for holding the fossil fuel industry accountable for them. Panelists will also offer legal and community perspectives on damages litigation as a means to shift some of the burden from taxpayers to polluters. \nPanel members will include Bob Kopp\, director of the Rutgers University Institute of Earth\, Ocean & Atmospheric Sciences; Brenda Ekwurzel\, director of climate science with the Union of Concerned Scientists Climate & Energy Program; and Jonathan Abady\, a partner with Emery Celli Brinckerhoff & Abady LLP. DuHaime was the lead strategist for both of New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s campaigns and served as a member of the Governor’s Executive Transition Team after Christie was first elected. DuHaime has worked in senior roles for President George W. Bush\, Senator John McCain and Mayor Rudy Giuliani. He has also been political director of the Republican National Committee\, senior advisor to the Republican Governors Association\, director of independent expenditures for the National Republican Senatorial Committee and executive director of the state Republican committee. \nHanna Mori is the state director for U.S. Senator Cory Booker. Mori began working for Booker as an intern at his nonprofit organization\, Newark Now\, and then for the City of Newark\, including the Mayor’s Office\, Business Administrator’s Office\, Law Department\, and the Office of Reentry. In 2013\, she joined Booker’s first U.S. Senate campaign\, where she helped develop his statewide and national policy platforms. As counsel\, her policy expertise spans everything from criminal justice reform\, to healthcare\, to immigration. A graduate of the University of North Carolina School of Law at Chapel Hill\, Mori is admitted to the bars of New Jersey and New York. \nMODERATOR\nPatrick Murray was named the Monmouth University Polling Institute’s founding director in 2005. Keynote speakers include Rutgers University Climate Institute Co-Director Anthony Broccoli\, Partnership for the Delaware Estuary Senior Science Director Danielle Kreeger\, and Monmouth University Marine and Environmental Biology and Policy Program Director John Tiedemann. DESCRIPTION:Distinguished NJ Songwriters Joe Rapolla and Joe D’Urso are back this year hosting the celebrated Songwriters by the Sea series at the Lauren K. Woods Theatre. What once started in a small coffee shop as an area for local songwriters has now grown into a series that features some of the top songwriters in the country. This year\, the show features special guest artists Tom Chapin and Jen Chapin with an intro set by George Wurzbach. The show will also feature Monmouth University student openers. \nIn a career that spans six decades\, 26 albums and three GRAMMY awards\, Hudson Valley Troubadour Tom Chapin has covered an incredible amount of creative ground. In addition to his work as a recording artist and concert performer\, Chapin has acted on Broadway\, as well as working extensively in television\, radio and film. As a music-maker\, the multi-talented singer/songwriter/guitarist has maintained two long and productive parallel careers\, both as a highly respected contemporary folk artist and as a pioneer in the field of children’s music. Chapin has established a reputation for insightful\, heartfelt songcraft and effortlessly charismatic live performances. Chapin’s infectious songs\, sterling musicianship and personal warmth consistently shine through\, whether he’s performing on record or in a concert hall\, an outdoor festival\, a school\, in front of a symphony orchestra or in an intimate coffeehouse. The New York Times called Chapin “one of the great personalities in contemporary folk music.” \nJen Chapin has been celebrated for writing “brilliant soulfully poetic urban folk music” (NPR) for almost two decades\, beginning with her debut\, Open Wide\, in 2002. Nurtured in and around NYC by a large family of artists\, writers\, and musicians\, Jen’s “observant\, lyrically deft\, politically aware and emotionally intuitive” (Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel) songwriting features both her “extraordinary voice” (De krenten uit de pop\, The Netherlands) and “astonishing jazz band” (popmatters). DESCRIPTION:Join Jennifer Cory ’01\, M.S.\, M.A.P.P.\, and Stacey Rose\, Ph.D.\, L.C.S.W.\, for a webinar to discuss the importance of psychological well-being during trying times. \nSpeakers\n\n \nJennifer Cory\, M.S.\, M.A.P.P.\, is the founder and chief hope facilitator of HEART Initiative\, a social impact organization dedicated to helping people with chronic conditions/diseases/stressors live with less fear and more joy\, hope\, and possibility. She also maintains a psychotherapy practice where\, for the past 18 years\, she has had the privilege of helping clients transform trauma\, loss\, and pain into meaning\, purpose\, and post-traumatic growth. Jennifer graduated from Monmouth University with a B.S.W. (’01)\, and has served as both an adjunct professor and on the Dean’s Council at the School of Social Work. She has also received her M.S. from Columbia University (’02) and a Master in Applied Positive Psychology degree from University of Pennsylvania (’15). \n\n\n \nStacey F. Rose\, Ph.D.\, L.C.S.W. is a psychotherapist specializing in helping people to create and sustain fulfilling relationships. Her practice\, ‘The Rose Relationship Learning Center’ helps people in all stages of relationships and life. Because Relationships Don’t Come with Directions. With over 25 years experience as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Psychotherapist\, Rose graduated from Fordham University (1991) and continued her academic journey by earning a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology in 2013. She is also trained in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing\, a treatment to help people thrive after trauma. DESCRIPTION:The Ladies of Laughter Funny & Fabulous Tour includes winners and the best talent from its national competition. What started out as an annual videotape comedy competition over 20 years ago in New York to honor a fellow women in comedy who helped so many women get their start\, has established itself as the CAREERBUILDER FOR WOMEN IN COMEDY. \nSince its inaugural year when the contest went “live” in a YWCA in New Jersey\, The Ladies of Laughter contest has visited legendary venues including legendary theaters\, Caesars and even Madison Square Garden.  Past participants include Amy Schumer\, Tammy Pescatelli and “Big Bang Theory” star\, Melissa Rauch\, among countless others. This show will include: \nRobin Fox\nWinner of the 2012 Ladies of Laughter Competition held at Gotham Comedy Club\, NYC\, New Jersey Stand-Up Comedian\, Robin Fox spent 17 years as a full-time mom and dieting. Then one day\, Robin gave up dieting and decided to make her life long dream of being a comedian a reality. Today she is happier than she can ever remember and will never look back! Original and funny\, she talks from her heart about the frustrations of suburban living\, marriage\, and raising a family. No longer is she willing to just be the funniest mom on her New Jersey cul-de-sac. This New Jersey mom is now a regular on the comedy scene playing at the top clubs in NYC and surrounding areas.Robin rose through the comedy ranks very quickly and has been a finalist at several prestigious comedy contests and festivals including Philly’s “Funniest Comedian” contest\, and Baltimore’s “Funniest.” She was a runner up at “The Laugh Off” at Caroline’s in NYC. She also has been seen at the NJ Comedy Festival and at the NY Underground Comedy Festival. Robin can be heard on XM and Sirius satellite radio and has been a guest numerous times on the “Joey Reynolds Show” on WOR coast to coast. Robin has been on We Entertainment television and on Lifetime TV. Robin was a “Hot Topic” of Conversation on ABC’s “The View.” \nLeighann Lord\nSmart\, sexy\, savvy\, and funny\, Leighann Lord’s “heads up humor” is stand-up comedy at it’s finest. Inspired by the brilliance of George Carlin\, the smooth jazz style of Franklyn Ajaye\, and the elegance of Rita Rudner\, Leighann has crafted her own unique brand of Thinking Cap Comedy. It’s no wonder she received the NYC Black Comedy Award for “The Most Thought Provoking Black Female Comic.” And for two consecutive years\, Leighann was Harlem Week’s official comedian. (The only other comedian in Harlem Week’s history to earn that distinction was Richard Pryor.) Leighann has performed around the world. In London she appeared at The Comedy Store\, and on the BBC show Blouse and Skirt (think Politically Incorrect meets BET). In The Netherlands\, she was a guest on the popular late night talk show Raymann is Late! and The Comedy Factory. A festival favorite\, Leighann has been featured in the Trinidad\, Montreal\, Winnipeg\, Halifax\, Boston\, Detroit and NYC Underground Comedy Festivals. She also entertained U.S. troops stationed in Afghanistan\, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia during Operation Enduring Freedom\, as well as troops helping the Haitian earthquake relief effort (Operation Unified Response) \nErin Maguire\nErin Maguire is a NYC based stand-up comic\, actor\, writer\, and emcee. Her stand-up was recently featured on Gotham Comedy Live for the Oculus/NextVR Network. She also recently wrote for the Comedy Central Roast of Alec Baldwin. Erin has appeared at the Lucille Ball Comedy Festival\, among some of comedy’s greats. She has also been featured at Women in Comedy Festival\, Laugh Your Asheville Off\, Boston Comedy Festival\, and Woodstock Comedy Festival. Erin has frequently worked for ESPN and the Game Show Network. Her comedy advice podcast\, Dear Pod\, charted in Apple’s top 100 comedy pods in America within two months of its debut.
