SUMMARY:Virtual Tuesday Night Book Club: Jeffrey Eugenides' The Virgin Suicides
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Tuesday Night Book Club! Hosted by Monmouth University’s Ken Womack and Michael Thomas\, each month we’ll explore a different novel. All you have to do is Zoom in and join the discussion! Our next book will be Jeffrey Eugenides’ The Virgin Suicides. \nFirst published in 1993\, The Virgin Suicides announced the arrival of a major new American novelist. In a quiet suburb of Detroit\, the five Lisbon sisters–beautiful\, eccentric\, and obsessively watched by the neighborhood boys–commit suicide one by one over the course of a single year. As the boys observe them from afar\, transfixed\, they piece together the mystery of the family’s fatal melancholy\, in this hypnotic and unforgettable novel of adolescent love\, disquiet\, and death. Jeffrey Eugenides evokes the emotions of youth with haunting sensitivity and dark humor and creates a coming-of-age story unlike any of our time. Adapted into a critically acclaimed film by Sofia Coppola\, The Virgin Suicides is a modern classic\, a lyrical and timeless tale of sex and suicide that transforms and mythologizes suburban middle-American life. \nWhen you register you will be provided the meeting link to join the conversation. CLICK HERE for more information on how to use zoom. Free and open to the public\, but registration is required.

SUMMARY:Human-Animal Interactions and COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:What does quality animal care and treatment have to do with public health? Can my dog be at risk for contracting or spreading COVID-19?  What does my cat think of me being home all of the time? This Q&A will discuss the science behind how animals play a role in our physical and mental health and wellness\, and how this relationship is especially relevant to the current COVID-19 crisis. We will also discuss the impact of the current pandemic on animal trainers\, veterinarians\, animal shelters\, zoos\, and aquariums locally and around the country. Finally\, we will discuss how the human-animal bond— and how our new social distancing measures due to COVID-19 may affect those bonds with our own pets at home. Lindsay Mehrkam\, Ph.D.\, is an assistant professor of psychology and the principal investigator of the Human-Animal Wellness Collaboratory at Monmouth University\, where she and her students train goldfish\, conduct clinical behavior services with dogs and cats\, and develop enrichment programs with a range of exotic wildlife at Six Flags Great Adventure & Safari. \nHosted by Lindsay Mehrkam\, Assistant Professor in the Psychology Department \nRSVP to Stacey Ayers at sayers@monmouth.edu. \nJoin via Zoom at 7pm EDT on May 28.

SUMMARY:Virtual Tuesday Night Book Club: James Baldwin’s Go Tell It On The Mountain
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Tuesday Night Book Club! Hosted by Monmouth University’s Ken Womack and Michael Thomas\, each month we’ll explore a different novel. All you have to do is Zoom in and join the discussion! \nThis month’s novel is James Baldwin’s GO TELL IT ON THE MOUNTAIN. Go Tell It On The Mountain\, first published in 1953\, is James Baldwin’s first major work\, a novel that has established itself as an American classic. With lyrical precision\, psychological directness\, resonating symbolic power\, and a rage that is at once unrelenting and compassionate\, Baldwin chronicles a fourteen-year-old boy’s discovery of the terms of his identity as the stepson of the minister of a storefront Pentecostal church in Harlem one Saturday in March of 1935. Baldwin’s rendering of his protagonist’s spiritual\, sexual\, and moral struggle of self-invention opened new possibilities in the American language and in the way Americans understand themselves. \nFree and open to the public\, but registration is required. You will be provided the Zoom link when you register.

SUMMARY:Virtual Tuesday Night Book Club: Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Tuesday Night Book Club! Hosted by Monmouth University’s Ken Womack and Michael Thomas\, each month we’ll explore a different novel. All you have to do is Zoom in and join the discussion! \nThis month’s novel is Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale. In Margaret Atwood’s dystopian future\, environmental disasters and declining birthrates have led to a Second American Civil War. The result is the rise of the Republic of Gilead\, a totalitarian regime that enforces rigid social roles and enslaves the few remaining fertile women. Offred is one of these\, a Handmaid bound to produce children for one of Gilead’s commanders. Deprived of her husband\, her child\, her freedom\, and even her own name\, Offred clings to her memories and her will to survive. At once a scathing satire\, an ominous warning\, and a tour de force of narrative suspense\, The Handmaid’s Tale is a modern classic. \nWhen you register you will be provided the meeting link to join the conversation. Get more information on how to use zoom

SUMMARY:“A Dead Husband is a Better Ticket to Congress than a Log Cabin”: Widows in Office\, 1920-1940
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Katherine Parkin\, Ph. D. – Professor of History and the Jules Plangere\, Jr. Endowed Chair in American Social History \nWhen the late Senator John McCain (R-AZ) died in 2018\, speculation turned to who the governor would appoint to fill out the remaining term\, and one of the names circulating was his widow\, Cindy McCain. The tradition of women finding widowhood as a path to politics is as old as women’s suffrage\, dating back one hundred years to 1920. \nThis talk will cover the two decades after women secured the right to vote\, when a minuscule number of women found their way into political office. Heralded by history as pioneering politicians\, a significant portion of the women in office at local\, state\, and national levels in these decades only found themselves elected or appointed to hold the seat of their dead husbands. While not the pioneering politicians we might imagine\, the political coverage of widows did help open the possibility for women to independently enter into politics. Indeed\, widows themselves and constituents following them discovered that women could be astute\, successful politicians. While not intended to extend power to women\, widowhood helped introduce women to the political arena and awakened Americans to their political potential. \nPlease RSVP by 7/21 to Stacey Ayers. \nZoom Information\nTopic: “A dead husband is a better ticket to Congress than a Log Cabin”: Widows in Office\, 1920-1940\nTime: Jul 23\, 2020 07:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) \nJoin Zoom Meeting \nhttps://monmouth.zoom.us/j/98796824870 \nMeeting ID: 987 9682 4870\nOne tap mobile\n+13126266799\,\,98796824870# US (Chicago)\n+16465588656\,\,98796824870# US (New York) \nDial by your location\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\n+1 646 558 8656 US (New York)\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Germantown)\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n+1 669 900 9128 US (San Jose)\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\nMeeting ID: 987 9682 4870\nFind your local number: https://monmouth.zoom.us/u/afFvorTXS
