SUMMARY:CANCELLED - MET OPERA: Les Pêcheurs de Perles (Broadcast in HD)
DESCRIPTION:Due to renovation upgrades in the Pollak Theatre this screening has been cancelled. You can purchase tickets to the encore screening of the Pearl Fishers on Sunday Feb. 21. Click here for details: https://www.monmouth.edu/templates/EventDetail.aspx?id=40802203326.  Bizet’s gorgeous opera of lust and longing set in the Far East returns to the Met stage for the first time in 100 years. Soprano Diana Damrau stars as Leïla\, the beautiful Hindu priestess pursued by rival pearl divers competing for her hand. Her suitors are tenor Matthew Polenzani and baritone Mariusz Kwiecien\, who sing the lilting duet “Au fond du temple saint\,” which opera fans know and adore. Director Penny Woolcock explores the timeless themes of pure love\, betrayal\, and vengeance in a production that vividly creates an undersea world on the stage of the Met. Conductor Gianandrea Noseda brings his romantic flair to the lush score from the composer of Carmen.

SUMMARY:SUSAN AMONS: WILD SIDE Maine Monoprints
DESCRIPTION:Lecture: February 11 from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. | Wilson Hall Auditorium\nOpening Reception: Thursday February 11\, from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m.\nFree and open to the public \nSusan Amons lives on a rare and beautiful peninsula in southern Maine. The estuary forms the western boundary\, and the ocean stretches out to the east. Every day\, Susan observes unusual birds and animals living in this preserved pocket of wildlife habitat. Marsh hawks\, eagles\, ibis\, geese\, mink\, and fisher cats\, are some of the species included in her repertoire of study. In late summer\, Susan camps in the solitude of the north woods. The lake supports it’s own unique selection of species including; salmon\, trout\, moose\, otter\, and loons. Susan loves to sit on a rock in the stream and paint. \nEach winter\, Susan returns to the studio to work on large-scale prints inspired by images that she records from nature throughout the year. To develop her monoprints\, she creates a group of mylar shapes which she inks\, prints\, and re-inks; building up color layers and altering spatial relationships. A series of related work evolves from the printed collection of cut out shapes. What Susan enjoys most about this process\, is that she is able to pursue multiple variations of her original idea. Susan’s final prints are multiple and varied\, brilliantly frontal\, or receding in space like the animals themselves\, a memory\, mysterious\, and wild by nature. \nSusan Amons holds a BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art\, and has received 21 artists’ fellowships from the Vermont Studio Center\, The Women’s Studio Workshop in New York\, and the Heliker-LaHotan Foundation in Maine. Susan is a member of the prestigious Peregrine Press in Maine\, and the venerable National Association of Women Artists in New York. Her work was chosen for the acclaimed exhibit\, “Maine Women Pioneers”\, at the University of New England in 2013. Her two recent solo exhibits include; “Natural Vision”\, at the Liriodendron Mansion in Maryland\, 2014\, and “Tidal Edge”\, at The Courthouse Gallery\, in Ellsworth\, Maine\, 2015. \nSusan Amons is represented by numerous galleries on the east coast. Her work is included in many public collections including; The Portland Museum of Art and The Farnsworth Art Museum in Maine\, The New York and Boston Public Libraries\, The Indiana University Library\, The University of New England Art Gallery\, Colby\, Bates\, and Bowdoin College Collections in Maine\, and the Zimmerli Museum Collection at Rutgers University in New Jersey. \nFor more information\, please see susanamons.com

SUMMARY:Taylor 2
DESCRIPTION:Established in 1993\, this six-member company brings Paul Taylor’s dances to venues of any size with all the artistry of the world renowned choreographer’s work – representing the wide range of athleticism\, humor and emotion found in his work. In selecting repertoire for Taylor 2\, Mr. Taylor chooses dances that span the broad spectrum of his career. Several of the dances performed by Taylor 2 have been re-worked from the Paul Taylor Dance Company’s version to enable the smaller ensemble of dancers to perform them. “A major interest is in seeing how ingeniously Taylor has edited his work for a six-person ensemble — half the size of the original… This version of Company B is not a patched hand-me-down\, but a lighter and more intimate creation that delivers the same emotional knockout.” — Robert Johnson\, The Star-Ledger \n“Taylor 2 is a kind of a miracle… All of the dancers are considerable talents [who] unite fearlessness with skill.” – Gia Kourlas\, New York Times \nMore information: www.ptamd.org/#whatisptamd

SUMMARY:LA Theatreworks: Dracula
DESCRIPTION:Bram Stoker’s novel of 1897\, Dracula\, was published with little popular fanfare. Critics\, however\, praised the author and put Stoker in the category of Mary Shelley and Edgar Allan Poe. But audiences didn’t flock to the tale of this otherworldly being that feeds off others to preserve eternal life\, until the early-mid 1900s when film versions generated enormous press for the title. Invasion stories\, during the height of British colonialism\, were made popular by Rudyard Kipling\, Arthur Conan Doyle and others\, but Stoker’s Dracula was like nothing the world had seen. This gothic horror is a classic for all time and has spawned hundreds of spin-offs in popular culture from Twilight to True Blood. \nIn Charles Morey’s acclaimed adaptation\, Count Dracula slips quietly into Victorian London with a cargo of his native Transylvanian soil\, necessary for rest between his victims. The city seems helpless against his frightful power\, and only one man\, the smart and resourceful Dr. Van Helsing\, can stop the carnage. But to do this\, he must uncover the vampire’s lair and pierce Dracula’s heart with a wooden stake- setting up an epic confrontation of good vs evil. Over the years\, the story of Dracula has been used as commentary in modern studies of psychology\, women’s issues\, and colonialism\, while never losing its place as one of the greatest horror stories ever told. \nUnder the leadership of Producing Director\, Susan Albert Loewenberg\, L.A. Theatre Works (LATW) has been the foremost radio theater company in the United States for more than two decades. L.A. Theatre Works is broadcast weekly in America on public radio stations\, daily in China on the Radio Beijing Network\, streamed online at www.latw.org and programs are aired internationally on the BBC\, CBC\, and many other English language networks. LATW has single-handedly brought the finest recorded dramatic literature into the homes of millions. On the road\, LATW has delighted audiences with its unique live radio theater style performances in over 300 small towns and major cities\, including New York\, Boston\, San Francisco\, Washington and Chicago\, Beijing and Shanghai. An L.A. Theatre Works performance is immediate\, spontaneous\, and features a first-rate cast\, live sound effects\, and a connection to the audience rarely felt in a traditional theater setting. This theater… is an event. \nThe cast of Dracula includes the well-known TV and film actor Nicholas Hormann who’s been seen in dozens of television hits including The West Wing\, Parks & Recreation\, Modern Family\, and Desperate Housewives. His numerous film credits include Kramer vs Kramer and the early Oliver Stone horror film The Hand. Mr. Hormann will play Dr. Van Helsing. \nVeteran horror film actor Skip Pipo will play the role of Renfield. Mr. Pipo’s long list of film and TV credits include B-movie favorites such as The Janitor\, Sam Hell\, and Poker Run as well as the television series The Black Dawn. \nThe cast also includes Michael Kirby who just wrapped the horror film Hell’s Heart\, Paul Culos\, Graham Outerbridge\, and Alexis Jacknow\, all up and coming TV actors\, Summer Spiro a star of the new web series Dabsity\, and Patrick Wenk-Wolff who has been seen recently on television in The Last Ship\, Rizzoli & Isles\, and Life on Mars.

SUMMARY:On Screen In Person: The Winding Stream
DESCRIPTION:The Winding Stream tells the story of the American roots music dynasty\, the Carters and the Cashes\, tracing the influence of their music from the 1920s through the present day\, and how a seemingly unlikely young man named Johnny Cash would be the one to lift up the Carter legacy from obscurity. An intimate account of reciprocity and love\, The Winding Stream features interviews and performances with roots music practitioners\, including one of the last interviews ever granted by Johnny Cash. \nBeth Harrington is an independent producer\, director and writer\, born in Boston and transplanted to the Pacific Northwest.  Harrington’s independent production Welcome to the Club – The Women of Rockabilly was honored with a 2003 Grammy nomination. This and other work reflects a long-standing love of music. SUMMARY:Heidi Rose Performance Artist in Mirror Image and Twin
DESCRIPTION:Mirror Image: Two cousins are born five months apart to identical twin mothers. Shaped by their mothers’ careers as 1950s pop singers\, these women both complement and contradict one another as their lives unfold. Mirror Image reveals a life and relationship that now exist only in dreams\, memories… and on stage. \nTwin: Identical twin girls each have a personality that is in some ways too big for their bodies. Too big to control. Too big to contain. They have lived their whole lives off-balance. Would they have been better proportioned had the egg not split? This performance is presented as a work in progress. \nThere will also be a post-show discussion following the performance. \nCo-sponsored by: the Monmouth University Communication and Gender Studies Department\, CommWorks: Students Committed to Performance\, the MU Master’s Program in Corporate and Public Communication\, and The Center for the Arts \nDr. Heidi Rose holds a B.S. in Speech/Theatre from Northwestern University\, an M.A. in Communication from Emerson College\, and an Interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Communication and Performance Studies from Arizona State University. She is currently associate professor in Communication\, with an emphasis on performance studies\, and director of the graduate program in Communication at Villanova University. Dr. Rose’s teaching and research focus primarily on performance\, culture\, and identity. \nDr. Rose’s research has been supported by grants from Villanova University\, the National Endowment for the Humanities\, and the Waterhouse Family Institute for the Study of Communication and Society. Her current projects examine Jamaican theatre and post-colonial identity\, and the phenomenology of auto/biographical solo performance. Her two solo performances\, Mirror Image and Good Enough\, explore individual identities across generation and time periods. A third piece\, Twin\, is currently being workshopped and will complete the family trilogy. \nDr. Rose was Editor-in-Chief for Text and Performance Quarterly\, the flagship journal of performance studies for the National Communication Association 2010-2012. She is president of the board of directors for PlayPenn\, an organization dedicated to the development of new plays and is a member of the National Communication Association\, PSi: Performance Studies International\, and the Eastern Communication Association.

SUMMARY:Doo Wop Explosion: A Night of Acappella Harmony
DESCRIPTION:Born on the street corners of urban America\, rhythm & blues and doo wop singing reached its peak in the 1950’s\, but still has a strong following today. While doo wop singing began as an African American art form\, by the late 1950’s it was enjoyed by singers of all races. Doo wop harmony in its purist form is acappella (without instrumentals). We’ve assembled six of the top acappella doo wop vocal groups from NYC to Philadelphia\, plus a couple special guests.  Choice hails from Jersey City and has been singing for 35 years.  Their video recently went viral attracting 6 million views.  The Tee-Tones formed on the streets of Brooklyn and fine tuned their harmonies in the tunnels of the NYC subway system. They’ve since appeared on Good Morning America and ABC World News Tonight.  The versatile group\, Quiet Storm\, has developed a huge following in the Philadelphia area.  Called “Storm Chasers\,” their fans follow them from concert to concert. Frankie and the Fashions are a Philadelphia acappella group whose origins reach back to the 1960’s. They’ve recorded several CD’s and are well known for their popular signature song\, “What Do I Have To Do”. The popular Piscataway NJ group\, Re-MemberThen\, has the distinction of twice winning the acappella showdowns at the Meadowlands. The Vic Donna Group is known for their tight intricate harmonies of obscure R&B and Doo Wop collectors sides and original material. Vic\, himself\, has been singing since 1956. Over the years\, he’s been backed on record by such noted groups as the Fi-Tones\, Parakeets\, Cadillacs\, Sharps\, Compliments and Angels. The Vic Donna Group has recently added a couple new singers with a lot of previous experience. As a special guest\, we welcome Larry Chance of the Earls.  Larry is an internationally known doo wop star who has agreed to sing acappella for us\, backed by Re-MemberThen.  By way of a big screen video\, we’ll have De’Sean Dooley\, grandson of the Orioles Sonny Til\, singing Orioles songs backed by Quiet Storm. Concert produced and emceed\nby Classic Urban Harmony’s Pam & Charlie Horner for Monmouth University’s\nCenter for the Arts. \n \n$45 Gold Circle seats include a meet and greet reception with some of the groups from 5:30 to 6:30 PM   \n*This line up is subject to change*
