DESCRIPTION:Lewis Mumford\nSelections from the Monmouth University Permanent Collection\nThe Dimattio Gallery – Upper Level\nLewis Mumford\, a dynamic writer\, literary and architectural critic\, moralist\, historian and philosopher. Born in Flushing\, NY\, on October 19\, 1895\, Mumford’s extensive contributions to literary scholarship\, technology\, urban planning\, and architecture are internationally renowned for their uncanny social vision and their timely prescience. Lewis Mumford criticized progress based on the intoxicating power of technology and the machine. He argued that the advancement of civilization should be cultivated by humanism\, and that technology should never be used to acquire global domination\, promote military prowess\, or erode individualism. \nLewis Mumford\, however\, was no pacifist—he despised fascism and urged America to fight in both World Wars. Like George Orwell\, he often accused his liberal contemporaries of being corrupt\, and claimed that their “willingness to submit to the Nazis rather than risk the need for using force in opposing them” was nothing short of egregious. \nHis many prestigious awards include the Medal of Freedom from President Lyndon Johnson\, the Presidential Medal of Art and Citation from Ronald Reagan\, and the Knight of the British Empire (K.B.E)\, an honor bestowed on him by Queen Elizabeth II. DESCRIPTION:Location: Pollak Theatre \nR. Luke DuBois is a composer\, artist\, and performer who explores the temporal\, verbal\, and visual structures of cultural and personal ephemera. He holds a doctorate in music composition from Columbia University\, and has lectured and taught worldwide on interactive sound and video performance. He has collaborated on interactive performance\, installation\, and music production work with many artists and organizations including Toni Dove\, Todd Reynolds\, Jamie Jewett\, Bora Yoon\, Michael Joaquin Grey\, Matthew Ritchie\, Elliott Sharp\, Michael Gordon\, Maya Lin\, Bang on a Can\, Engine 27\, Harvestworks\, and LEMUR\, and was the director of the Princeton Laptop Orchestra for its 2007 season. \nStemming from his investigations of “time-lapse phonography\,” his work is a sonic and encyclopedic relative to time-lapse photography. Just as a long camera exposure fuses motion into a single image\, his projects reveal the average sonority\, visual language\, and vocabulary in music\, film\, text\, or cultural information. Exhibitions of his work include the Insitut Valencià d’Art Modern\, Spain; 2008 Democratic National Convention\, Denver; Weisman Art Museum\, Minneapolis; San Jose Museum of Art; National Constitution Center\, Philadelphia; Cleveland Museum of Contemporary Art\, Daelim Contemporary Art Museum\, Seoul; 2007 Sundance Film Festival; the Sydney Film Festival; the Smithsonian American Art Museum; and PROSPECT.2 New Orleans. His work and writing has appeared in print and online in The New York Times\, National Geographic\, and Esquire Magazine. \nAn active visual and musical collaborator\, DuBois is the co-author of Jitter\, a software suite for the real-time manipulation of matrix data developed by San Francisco-based software company Cycling’74. He appears on nearly twenty-five albums both individually and as part of the avant-garde electronic group The Freight Elevator Quartet. He currently performs as part of Bioluminescence\, a duo with vocalist Lesley Flanigan that explores the modality of the human voice\, and in Fair Use\, a trio with Zach Layton and Matthew Ostrowski that looks at our accelerating culture through electronic performance and remixing of cinema.  \nWatch an interview with the artist here

DESCRIPTION:Jennifer Levonian creates animations and paintings in Philadelphia\, PA. Her work has been screened and exhibited across the United States\, including at the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the National Museum for Women in the Arts and the National Portrait Gallery\, Washington\, D.C. In 2009\, she was awarded a Pew Fellowship in the Arts. In addition to delivering an artist lecture and screening a few of her short films\, Jennifer will lead a workshop on stop motion animation.

DESCRIPTION:National Theatre Live’s 2010 broadcast of Frankenstein returns to\ncinemas as part of the National Theatre’s 50th anniversary celebrations. \nFrankenstein\n enjoyed a sell-out run at the National Theatre\, and went on to win\nawards including the 2012 Olivier Award for Best Actor for Benedict\nCumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller.  \nOscar-winner Danny Boyle\n(Trainspotting\, Slumdog Millionaire) directs a sensational production.\nIn this encore screening Benedict Cumberbatch (Star Trek: Into Darkness\,\n BBC’s Sherlock) plays Dr. Frankenstein and Jonny Lee Miller\n(Trainspotting\, CBS’s Elementary) his creation.  \nChildlike in his\ninnocence but grotesque in form\, Frankenstein’s bewildered creature is\ncast out into a hostile universe by his horror-struck maker. Meeting\nwith cruelty wherever he goes\, the friendless Creature\, increasingly\ndesperate and vengeful\, determines to track down his creator and strike a\n terrifying deal. DESCRIPTION:Location: Pollak Theatre \nPresident Obama’s Inaugural Poet\, Richard Blanco was made in Cuba\, assembled in Spain\, and imported to the United States—meaning his mother\, 7 months pregnant\, and the rest of the family arrived as exiles from Cuba to Madrid where he was born. Only 45 days later\, the family emigrated once more and settled in Miami. His acclaimed first book of poetry\, City of a Hundred Fires\, explores the yearnings and negotiation of cultural identity as a Cuban- American\, and received the Agnes Starrett Poetry Prize. His second book\, Directions to The Beach of the Dead\, won the Beyond Margins Award from the PEN American Center for its continued exploration of the universal themes of cultural identity and homecoming.

DESCRIPTION:The Sounds of Asbury Park and other Shore points are celebrated when a pair of musically minded Jersey Joes — Joe D’Urso and Joe Rapolla — bring their Songwriters by the Sea series of intimate\, relaxed\, and inspired round-robins to the Pollak Theatre stage. What started out as a coffee shop show for area songwriters to casually perform with other writers in Asbury Park has quickly evolved into a national series featuring some of the top songwriters in music today. Artists to perform include Marshall Crenshaw\, David Johansen and Allison Moorer. Opening the show will be Monmouth University students Natalie Zeller\, Bryan Haring and Erin Holmes. \n
