SUMMARY:National Theatre of London: The Hard Problem (Broadcast in HD)
DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed playwright Tom Stoppard (Shakespeare in Love\, Arcadia\, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead) returns to the National Theatre with his highly-anticipated new play The Hard Problem\, directed by Nicholas Hytner (Othello\, Hamlet\, One Man\, Two Guvnors). Hilary\, a young psychology researcher at a brain science institute\, is nursing a private sorrow and a troubling question at work\, where psychology and biology meet. This is ‘the hard problem’ which puts Hilary at odds with her colleagues who include her first mentor Spike\, her boss Leo and the billionaire founder of the institute\, Jerry. Is the day coming when the computer and the fMRI scanner will answer all the questions psychology can ask? Meanwhile Hilary needs a miracle\, and she is prepared to pray for one.

SUMMARY:National Theatre of London: Behind the Beautiful Forevers (Broadcast in HD)
DESCRIPTION:Meera Syal (The Kumars\, Goodness Gracious Me\, Rafta Rafta at the National) returns to the National Theatre\, directed by Rufus Norris (Broken\, London Road). Pulitzer Prize-winner Katherine Boo spent three years in Annawadi recording the lives of its residents. From her uncompromising book\, winner of the National Book Award for Non-Fiction 2012\, David Hare has fashioned a tumultuous play on an epic scale. India is surging with global ambition. But beyond the luxury hotels surrounding Mumbai airport lies a makeshift slum\, full of people with plans of their own. Zehrunisa and her son Abdul aim to recycle enough rubbish to fund a proper house. Sunil\, twelve and stunted\, wants to eat until he’s as tall as Kalu the thief. Asha seeks to steal government anti-poverty funds to turn herself into a ‘first-class person’\, while her daughter Manju intends to become the slum’s first female graduate.  But their schemes are fragile; global recession threatens the garbage trade\, and another slum-dweller is about to make an accusation that will destroy herself and shatter the neighbourhood.

SUMMARY:Urinetown
DESCRIPTION:Urinetown March 4 – 8; March 10 – 12\, 2015Lauren K. Woods Theatre \nFrom an American town in the early 20th century\, we flash forward to a future dystopia where a severe water shortage has made public pay-per-use toilets a legal necessity. Urinetown was a hit Broadway musical in the early 21st century\, running for two and a half years. It won Tony Awards for its composer and lyricists Mark Hollman and Greg Kotis and Mr. Kotis also won for the book of the musical.  The show is a satirical take on social change (the police are represented by Officers Lockstock and Barrel)\, corporate greed (the pay toilets are run by “Urine Good Company”)\, and Broadway musicals themselves. One of the show’s characters – its hero Bobby Strong – was included as one of the 100 Greatest Roles in Musical Theatre.

SUMMARY:LA Theatre Work’s In the Heat of the Night
DESCRIPTION:There will be a postshow Q&A with the cast following the performance. \n John Ball’s 1965 novel\, In the Heat of the Night\, which was adapted into a five time Academy Award-winning film starring Sidney Poitier and a hugely popular television series\, tells the story of black police detective Virgil Tibbs passing through the small town in the Carolinas on a hot August night in an America during the 1960s grappling with integration and an evolving acceptance of the Civil Rights Movement. This was the era of sit-ins and tear gas\, of marches and assassinations. This was the era of Martin Luther King Jr.\, the Kennedys\, and LBJ and an America finally\, deliberately\, moving towards a future of equality regardless of skin color.   Now in conjunction with LA Theatre Works\, the foremost radio theatre company in the United States\, playwright and screenwriter Matt Pelfrey’s riveting stage adaptation of this classic American thriller comes to life in a “live-in-performance” radio drama. The show features a first-rate cast of TV and film actors\, complete with live sound effects\, and a connection to the audience rarely felt in a traditional dramatic play. Ball’s novel reflected the difficult and personal clashes of the time – the kind of daily encounters that showed ingrained racist attitudes and behaviors. The play demonstrates the slow evolution of attitudes\, but leaves the characters\, and America\, with a long way to go. In the Heat of the Night remains shockingly emblematic of America in the 1960s\, and how\, almost half a century later\, our nation is still conquering the demon of prejudice.

SUMMARY:Our Town by Thornton Wilder
DESCRIPTION:November 5 – 9 and 12 – 15\, 2014Lauren K. Woods Theatre \nA University-wide production of the classic Pulitzer-Prize winning play by Thornton Wilder\, Our Town tells the universal story of small town America. Though taking place in the first decade of the 20th century and written in 1938\, Our Town has consistently been hailed as a theatrical masterpiece. A New York production won the Tony Award for best revival in 1989 and an off-Broadway presentation in 2009 won accolades from critics and audiences alike and ran for nearly 3 years.  Performed with little scenery and having the character of Stage Manager directly address the audience\, Our Town asks us to consider what is important in life. When Emily wants to relive a day in her life\, she is told “Choose the least important day of your life; it will be important enough.”

SUMMARY:Aquila Theatre’s Wuthering Heights
DESCRIPTION:Aquila Theatre brings to life Emily Bronte’s classic story of all-consuming passion with its new production of Wuthering Heights. \nThe novel\, one of the most famous works of world literature\, was first published in 1847 under a pseudonym and is Emily Bronte’s only work. Wuthering Heights recounts the tale of ill-fated lovers on the lonely moors of northern England. Heathcliff and Catherine meet as children when Catherine’s father brings the abandoned boy home to live with them. The two grow up together\, living freely on the moors while Heathcliff is tormented by Catherine’s brother. When Catherine’s parents die\, her brother turns Heathcliff out\, forcing him to live among the servants. Catherine marries and the crushed Heathcliff disappears. Years later\, a wealthy Heathcliff returns\, but is it too late for them? \nWuthering Heights is a deep and wide story of passion\, revenge\, family\, class\, and the supernatural. Over a century and a half later\, Bronte’s magnum opus remains incredibly moving. Bringing its signature style and dynamic approach\, Aquila re-imagines one of the most famous love stories ever told with this heart wrenching new production. Aquila Theatre is renowned for its ability to adapt works of classical literature into enthralling and mesmerizing live performances. Impeccable design and a unique physical style combine with a marvelous cast to make Wuthering Heights an exquisite and captivating theatrical experience. \nPre-Show Discussion with Cast at 7 pm
