Based on the famed comic strip “Peanuts” by Charles Schulz\, the musical tells the story of some typical days in the life of Charlie Brown. From running after the school bus to spying the cute little red-haired girl at lunch\, Charlie deals with the fun and frustrations of life with his friends Lucy\, Linus and Schroeder; his kid sister Sally; and his faithful companion\, Snoopy. The original production featured Gary Burghoff (Radar in the MASH series). The 1999 revival won 2 Tony Awards – for Roger Bart as Snoopy and Kristen Chenoweth as Sally –  and the Drama Desk award for “Best Revival of a Musical”. \nThe songs of the show\, written by Clark Gesner\, reveal the dreams and goals of the characters: Lucy explores her feelings for Schroeder while he plays Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” (“it’s always been my dream that I’d marry a man that plays the piano”); Linus sings and dances with his security blanket in “My Blanket and Me”\, and even Snoopy sings the praises of his favorite time of day in “Suppertime!”  For the revival\, Andrew Lippa added a new song that had Sally searching for “A New Philosophy” (is it “Why are you telling me?” or “I can’t stand it!”?)  As the day comes to a close\, the whole gang reflects on the things that bring them “Happiness”.Directed by Maurice J. Moran\, the Shadow Lawn production features a range of actors: professional members of Actors’ Equity Association\, MU students and alumni\, and new rising stars.

SUMMARY:The Mitzvah
DESCRIPTION:The Mitzvah (“The Good Deed”) is a one-person play that dramatically explores one of the most shocking stories of the Second World War. More than a hundred thousand German men — classified as “mischlinge” (the derogatory term the Nazis used to describe those descended from one or two Jewish grandparents) — fought in the German armed forces. After the play there will be a post-performance lecture and audience discussion led by Grunwald.  \nThe story of one such mischling is at the center of The Mitzvah and actor (and child of survivor) Roger Grunwald seamlessly transforms himself into an array of characters to tell that story. In addition to Christoph (the “mischling”)\, other characters include Schmuel\, a Polish Jew from Bialystok and the play’s Chorus who offers edgy commentary that probes the boundary between the absurd and the horrific. The Mitzvah is a touching and tragic tale told in a powerful one-act solo performance created by Grunwald and Broadway veteran Annie McGreevey. \nThe Mitzvah adds to the historical narratives about The Holocaust at a time when few survivors remain to tell their stories to younger generations and was inspired by the lives of Grunwald’s mother and aunt\, survivors of Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen\, respectively. It premiered at the Emerging Artists Theatre’s “Illuminating Artists: One Man Talking” festival in New York City and is currently being presented in theaters\, universities and Jewish organizations around the country. \nThrough one soldier’s story\, The Mitzvah reveals the startling history of tens of thousands of “partial Jews” who served in Hitler’s military\, most of whom were discharged in 1940. Nearly all were sent to forced labor camps — or worse. However\, a few thousand who had an “Aryan appearance” and who were deemed by the Reich to be “valuable to the war effort\,” were exempted from the Nazi race laws. A “Declaration of German Blood” (a Deutschblütigkeitserklärung) — signed by Hitler himself — allowed these select few thousand mischlinge to fight for the Nazi cause. DESCRIPTION:America in the 1960s\, an era that encouraged LOVE\, was populated by “Mad Men” and “Mod Women” trying to navigate the new normal. In this freshly conceived production of Neil Simon’s classic\, Last of the Red Hot Lovers\, true comedy ensues when a modern man in the hip sixties looks for something new and different\, but ends up finding himself in the same situation\, again and again…and again! \nBarney Cashman is middle-aged\, married\, overworked and overweight. It’s finally his turn to join the sexual revolution… before it’s too late. With no experience in covert maneuvers\, he arranges three attempted trysts. His targets; a bawdy bundle of fun who likes smooth whiskey and other women’s husbands\, a young actress too kooky for words\, and a neurotic housewife who happens to be married to his best friend. DESCRIPTION:Shakespeare’s great comedy\, Much Ado About Nothing\, highlights Aquila Theatre’s 25th anniversary season. Spying\, subterfuge\, deception\, false identities\, slander\, manipulation and love all take part in this wonderfully entertaining battle of the sexes. Much Ado About Nothing\, thought to have been written in 1598\, belongs to a group of Shakespeare’s more mature romantic comedies. It is an exuberant\, philosophical\, and festive play exceling in combative wit\, melodrama\, and potential tragedy. Much Ado About Nothing is wonderfully intricate\, flush with surprising twists and turns\, and articulated in expert language. Aquila Theatre’s original Much Ado opened in Boston and toured the United States in 2000/2001. It was performed in 60 American cities\, ran for nearly a year including Off Broadway in New York\, was performed at the White House for the President and First Lady\, and was then revived at the La Jolla Playhouse in 2006. The New York Times described the show as “Outstanding . . . almost unbearable fun. . . gleefully engaging . . . and directed with inspiration.” The New Yorker hailed it as “Just plain cool . . . beautifully spoken\, dramatically revealing\, and crystalline in effect.” Aquila’s original Much Ado was a Critic’s Choice for Time Out\, The Village Voice and The New York Times. \nThere will be a preshow talk at 6:00 PM with the cast the day of show.

SUMMARY:LA Theatreworks: Dracula
DESCRIPTION:Bram Stoker’s novel of 1897\, Dracula\, was published with little popular fanfare. Critics\, however\, praised the author and put Stoker in the category of Mary Shelley and Edgar Allan Poe. But audiences didn’t flock to the tale of this otherworldly being that feeds off others to preserve eternal life\, until the early-mid 1900s when film versions generated enormous press for the title. Invasion stories\, during the height of British colonialism\, were made popular by Rudyard Kipling\, Arthur Conan Doyle and others\, but Stoker’s Dracula was like nothing the world had seen. This gothic horror is a classic for all time and has spawned hundreds of spin-offs in popular culture from Twilight to True Blood. \nIn Charles Morey’s acclaimed adaptation\, Count Dracula slips quietly into Victorian London with a cargo of his native Transylvanian soil\, necessary for rest between his victims. The city seems helpless against his frightful power\, and only one man\, the smart and resourceful Dr. Van Helsing\, can stop the carnage. But to do this\, he must uncover the vampire’s lair and pierce Dracula’s heart with a wooden stake- setting up an epic confrontation of good vs evil. Over the years\, the story of Dracula has been used as commentary in modern studies of psychology\, women’s issues\, and colonialism\, while never losing its place as one of the greatest horror stories ever told. \nUnder the leadership of Producing Director\, Susan Albert Loewenberg\, L.A. Theatre Works (LATW) has been the foremost radio theater company in the United States for more than two decades. L.A. This theater… is an event. \nThe cast of Dracula includes the well-known TV and film actor Nicholas Hormann who’s been seen in dozens of television hits including The West Wing\, Parks & Recreation\, Modern Family\, and Desperate Housewives. His numerous film credits include Kramer vs Kramer and the early Oliver Stone horror film The Hand. Mr. Hormann will play Dr. Van Helsing. \nVeteran horror film actor Skip Pipo will play the role of Renfield. Mr. Pipo’s long list of film and TV credits include B-movie favorites such as The Janitor\, Sam Hell\, and Poker Run as well as the television series The Black Dawn. \nThe cast also includes Michael Kirby who just wrapped the horror film Hell’s Heart\, Paul Culos\, Graham Outerbridge\, and Alexis Jacknow\, all up and coming TV actors\, Summer Spiro a star of the new web series Dabsity\, and Patrick Wenk-Wolff who has been seen recently on television in The Last Ship\, Rizzoli & Isles\, and Life on Mars.
