SUMMARY:The Lords of 52nd Street - LEGENDS OF THE BILLY JOEL BAND with Special Guest Matt McAndrew
DESCRIPTION:The Lords of 52nd Street are Billy Joel’s original band\, including Liberty\nDeVitto on drums\, Russell Javors on rhythm guitar\, and Richie Cannata on\nsaxophone and keyboards. The band recorded and toured with Joel for over a\ndecade performing alongside the Piano Man at famous arenas including Wembley\nStadium\, Sydney Opera House\, Madison Square Garden\, and the LA Forum. The band\nmembers (along with Doug Stegmeyer – bass guitar) recorded the Turnstiles album\,\nand then teamed up with legendary producer Phil Ramone to record The\nStranger. The album was a commercial success\, it holds a RIAA diamond\ncertification (10x platinum)\, and several #1 singles including\, Only\nThe Good Die Young and Just The Way You Are. They continued to\ncreate many other successful albums including 52nd Street\, Glass\nHouses\, The Nylon Curtain. In 2014\, Javors\, Cannata\, and DeVitto (with Stegmeyer\,\nposthumously) were inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame. At that\ntime\, they decided to\nreunite after a 30-year separation and began performing in front of live\naudiences together. Fans declared that The Lords’ live performances sound\njust like the original recordings with Billy Joel\, if not better and they\ncontinue to awe fans from around the world!  \nThe show will open with a performance by Matt McAndrew\, singer songwriter\, from\nseason seven of The Voice.  Matt is a New\nJersey native who creates sincere\, guitar-driven music. Matt’s original single\nfrom The Voice\, Wasted Love\, dominated the charts and hearts of fans worldwide.

DESCRIPTION:Presented in partnership with Autism Speaks NJ\, this special concert presentation held on World Autism Awareness Day will feature Geoff Sewell\, founder of the classical crossover opera band Amici Forever and his cast of exceptionally talented Broadway performers singing favorite pieces from well-known musicals\, operas and popular music. From classic opera favorites like La Traviata’s Brindisi to Phantom’s All I Ask of You and crowd pleasers like That’s Amore\, audiences will delight in the uplifting performance by the gifted vocalists of Bravo Amici. The concert will also feature a special video presentation of Sewell’s song Heal Me co-written by his wife Simone and featuring daughters Olivia and Sienna (who has autism) highlighting the message that autism is treatable. This event will be held in conjunction with the Art+Autism gallery exhibition opening reception featuring juried work by artists with Autism. Proceeds will benefit Autism Speaks NJ.

DESCRIPTION:Help is here!! Janice Wolfe is an internationally known behaviorist who specializes in rehabilitating fearful dogs. She has rehabilitated more than 25\,000 dogs as well as written and co-authored many books on animal behavior. \nJanice has so kindly offered to provide a seminar to teach us all how to help\, work with\, and ultimately understand how fearful dogs think! Shelters and rescue groups will always have frightened\, scared dogs – that’s a given. The recent Howell dog hording case of close to 300 dogs\, and a more recent case in Jackson where 17 large dogs were living in horrible conditions\, made us realize dogs from circumstances such as these need professional help. We reached out to Janice so we could all learn how to help them together. Your donations of food and supplies came in car loads and we are so very grateful for the generosity the public has shown us\, but the real work is still ahead of us! Some of these animals have never been touched by a human being. SUMMARY:Heidi Rose Performance Artist in Mirror Image and Twin
DESCRIPTION:Mirror Image: Two cousins are born five months apart to identical twin mothers. Shaped by their mothers’ careers as 1950s pop singers\, these women both complement and contradict one another as their lives unfold. Mirror Image reveals a life and relationship that now exist only in dreams\, memories… and on stage. \nTwin: Identical twin girls each have a personality that is in some ways too big for their bodies. Too big to control. Too big to contain. They have lived their whole lives off-balance. Would they have been better proportioned had the egg not split? This performance is presented as a work in progress. \nThere will also be a post-show discussion following the performance. \nCo-sponsored by: the Monmouth University Communication and Gender Studies Department\, CommWorks: Students Committed to Performance\, the MU Master’s Program in Corporate and Public Communication\, and The Center for the Arts \nDr. Heidi Rose holds a B.S. in Speech/Theatre from Northwestern University\, an M.A. in Communication from Emerson College\, and an Interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Communication and Performance Studies from Arizona State University. She is currently associate professor in Communication\, with an emphasis on performance studies\, and director of the graduate program in Communication at Villanova University. Dr. Rose’s teaching and research focus primarily on performance\, culture\, and identity. \nDr. Rose’s research has been supported by grants from Villanova University\, the National Endowment for the Humanities\, and the Waterhouse Family Institute for the Study of Communication and Society. Her current projects examine Jamaican theatre and post-colonial identity\, and the phenomenology of auto/biographical solo performance. Her two solo performances\, Mirror Image and Good Enough\, explore individual identities across generation and time periods. A third piece\, Twin\, is currently being workshopped and will complete the family trilogy. \nDr. Rose was Editor-in-Chief for Text and Performance Quarterly\, the flagship journal of performance studies for the National Communication Association 2010-2012. She is president of the board of directors for PlayPenn\, an organization dedicated to the development of new plays and is a member of the National Communication Association\, PSi: Performance Studies International\, and the Eastern Communication Association.

SUMMARY:Women Waging the Way
DESCRIPTION:The event focuses on an important issue that touches all individuals\, equality. Women have made immense progress over the last century in regards to obtaining parity\, but still today women face discrimination based on their gender. Women Waging the Way aims to foster the equality of all humans by showcasing artists of all gender and backgrounds along with art of young girls in India who are currently learning the importance of acceptance through the “Rainbow Program.” The Rainbow Program is a school in Loreto Sealdah\, Kolkata\, India that works to integrate girls of diverse socio-economic backgrounds and foster the common goal of breaking the cycle of poverty and empowerment through education. \nThe event will take place on one night and will showcase fine art\, theater\, and music through two “acts.” All artwork will be displayed on easels in a semi-circle on the stage and will serve as a “backdrop” for Act 1. Act 1 will consist of performances by young artists who will present songs\, skits\, and other performances that focus on the theme of the night. During Act 2\, attendees will be offered the opportunity to view the art up close and take part in a silent auction. There will be a mix of art from local artists that will be up for auction and artwork from children who are currently enrolled in the “Rainbow Program.” \nThe net-profits will be donated to Women and Girls Education International (WAGE International)\, a 501(c)(3) organization based in Monmouth County that works to empower through education. \nThis event is sponsored by the Monmouth University Center for the Arts. You will still be able to purchase lunch separately at the Student Center during the forum or go off campus on your own. \nAs a young child in the 1950s\, Bruce Springsteen saw Elvis Presley perform on The Ed Sullivan Show\, turned towards his mother and said\, “I wanna be just…like…that.” It wasn’t until he was a teenager in 1964\, however\, during the first summer after the British Invasion began to transform U.S. popular culture\, that Springsteen took his first serious steps towards a life in music. According to Peter Ames Carlin’s biography BRUCE\, that summer he used money earned from painting his aunt’s house to purchase an $18 acoustic guitar\, a copy of 100 Greatest American Folk Songs and then “committed himself to mastering the instrument.” Fifty years have passed since that fateful summer\, and Bruce Springsteen is now one of popular music’s most beloved\, significant and enduring artists. \nThe Friends and Monmouth University will sponsor a unique Springsteen-themed forum entitled in celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of Bruce Springsteen’s first major steps towards becoming a professional musician.\nThe structure of the forum will be centered around a series of moderated panel discussions on various Springsteen-related topics\, allowing the audience to hear from and interact with a variety of authors and scholars. DESCRIPTION:Native American poet Natalie Diaz will be in residence at Monmouth University on Thursday\, April 17 and Friday\, April 18th\, 2014. \nOn Thursday\, 17th\, at 11:00 a.m.\, she will speak about the language revitalization program at Fort Mojave\, her home reservation\, where she works with the last Elder speakers of the Mojave language. At 3:00 p.m. she will conduct a poetry workshop with students and community members. At 4:30 p.m. she will read her poems. \nOn Friday\, 18th\, Natalie Diaz will participate in the afternoon launch of The Monmouth Review\, the student-edited literary and arts journal\, outside Wilson Hall. \nNatalie Diaz grew up in the Fort Mojave Indian Village in Needles\, California\, on the banks of the Colorado River. She is Mojave and an enrolled member of the Gila River Indian Community. \nHer poems have appeared in The North American Review\, The Southeast Review\, Prairie Schooner\, Spillway\, Best New Poets 2007\, The Pushcart Prize: Best of the Small Presses\, and other literary journals and anthologies. Her book\, When My Brother Was an Aztec\, was published by Copper Canyon Press in 2012. \nHer book will be available for purchase and signing at the poetry reading. \nThis residency is co-sponsored by the West Branch Arts Council and the Department of English.

STANDING ROOM TICKETS WILL STILL BE AVAILABLE AT THE DOOR. Seated tickets for this event are currently sold out\, but standing room tickets are still available. By 10:15 am\, we will begin to seat “standing room” ticket holders in any empty seats. \nThis February will mark 50 years since the Beatles landed at the newly-renamed Kennedy Airport and days later performed live on the Ed Sullivan Show to a record setting 73 million people changing music and popular culture forever.
