SUMMARY:Why Americans Doubt Climate Science
DESCRIPTION:A presentation by Peter Jacques\, Ph.D. \nIn 2023\, fifteen percent of surveyed Americans did not think climate change was happening\, and 28 percent responded that warming was not caused by human activities. 22 percent were doubtful or dismissive of climate change. Why is this when over\, according to a 2021 survey of climate experts found that 98.7 percent of them said the climate is warming and humans are driving this global environmental change? Between confirmed climate experts who published 20 or more peer reviewed papers on climate change between 2015 and 2019\, there was 100 percent agreement that the Earth is warming mostly because of human activity. \nAt least part of this disconnect is because there has been a US-centered counter-movement organized to cast doubt on climate change science and climate scientists. This effort is organized by policy elites in conservative think tanks who have guided some of our narratives and these narratives have turned an elite-led counter-movement to one that is populist. This discussion will attend to the social science surrounding this climate change counter-movement (CCCM).

SUMMARY:Arlo Guthrie - What’s Left Of Me - A Conversation With Bob Santelli
DESCRIPTION:Arlo Guthrie is returning to the stage for a series of appearances after his retirement from musical performances. As the oldest son of Woody Guthrie and Marjorie Guthrie\, Arlo made his first appearance onstage at age 13 and built a renowned career touring North American for six decades. In October 2020\, Guthrie announced his retirement from the road amid the onslaught of the Coronavirus pandemic. Two years later\, he’s had enough of retirement and launched a new company Gut3 Productions with his wife Marti Ladd to present the new “In Conversation with Arlo Guthrie” four-part series. \n“These engagements won’t be musical events\,” said Guthrie. “We’ll be setting this as an interview with talking\, joking\, telling stories…as well as answering questions from the audience. We’ll have some fun\, and we’ll talk about serious subjects\, as well”. \nWhat’s Left Of Me features Arlo in conversation with Bob Santelli\, Executive Director of the Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music and includes rarely seen video footage along with an audience Q&A. Unscripted\, unrehearsed\, and under no illusions but his own\, Arlo Guthrie returns to venerable venues as a man who has seen it all\, and lived to tell the story after 60 years on the road. \nMr. Santelli\, a contributor to Rolling Stone magazine\, is co-author with Nora Guthrie of Woody Guthrie – Songs and Art\, Words of Wisdom\, which will be available for purchase. \nAbout Arlo Guthrie \nArlo Guthrie was born on July 10\, 1947\, in Brooklyn\, New York; the son of legendary folk artist Woody Guthrie and Marjorie Mazia Guthrie. Arlo grew up surrounded by renowned folk musicians: Pete Seeger\, Leadbelly\, Cisco Houston\, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott\, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee\, and the Weavers. Since the age of 13\, Arlo became absorbed in the music that was shaping the world. By the age of 20\, he was touring overseas. \nA natural-born storyteller and accomplished musician\, Arlo attracted and surprised audiences all over the world with his unique folk style. Arlo’s career soared with his debut of “The Alice’s Restaurant Massacree” at the Newport Folk Festival in 1967. Later that year\, he was nominated for a GRAMMY Award in the “Best Folk Performance” category for the studio version of the song on his debut album\, Alice’s Restaurant. The album went Gold (1969) and then Platinum (1986)\, and was adapted into a film by director Arthur Penn and released a few days after Arlo performed at the original Woodstock Festival in 1969. \nArlo has released 32 acclaimed albums\, has appeared in notable TV shows and movies throughout the decades\, and led a lauded six-decade-long touring career performing on the world’s most distinguished stages. \nAbout Bob Santelli \nBob Santelli is the author of more than a dozen books on American music\, including\, Woody Guthrie: Songs and Art\, Words and Wisdom (w/co-author Nora Guthrie) and Greetings from E Street: The Story of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.  Santelli is currently the Executive Director of the Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music at Monmouth University and the Director of Popular Music at Oregon State University. He also was the Founding Executive Director of the GRAMMY Museum in Los Angeles\, the former CEO and Artistic Director of Experience Music Project in Seattle\, and the Vice-President of Education and Public Programs at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland. A GRAMMY winner\, Santelli co-produced with Smithsonian Folkways box sets and books on Woody Guthrie\, Lead Belly\, and Pete Seeger.  He also was one of the executive producers of the public television series In Performance at the White House during the Obama administration and created music education programs with First Lady Michelle Obama. \n

SUMMARY:From Rock and Roll to Recovery and Everything In Between with Ricky Byrd
DESCRIPTION:Ricky Byrd is first and foremost – a man living in long term recovery. He also happens to be part of rock ‘n roll royalty. He is a well-recognized musician who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as the lead guitarist and former original member of Joan Jett and The Blackhearts. Ricky played with Joan from 1981-1992\, and has also recorded or toured with Roger Daltrey\, Ian Hunter\, Southside Johnny and many other talented musicians since that time. \nRicky most recently has been combining his love for music with his passion and mission to help carry the torch of change surrounding the stigma of drug and alcohol use. He hopes to break down the barriers and spread the message of hope\, education\, awareness and addiction resources to his audiences. Using the healing powers of music as a touchstone\, Ricky likes to motivate those early in recovery or still struggling\, along with their family members. Whether it’s through his various speaking appearances\, concert events\, music outreach sessions\, small recovery music groups\, or prevention programs\, Ricky is dedicated to inspiring change. \nAs a songwriter\, who now often focuses on recovery lyrics\, Ricky moves people to laugh\, cry and think. He’s played his songs in the most intimate of rooms as well as to hundreds of thousands all over the world. He recognizes the power of the word and the music and often combines both into a message of hope and encouragement for sobriety. \nRicky can contribute to an event by sharing famous rock ‘n roll stories in a keynote address or by performing recovery music from his latest CD\, Clean Getaway. There is also a special place in his heart for smaller group settings where he can play acoustic guitar and clearly see the faces\, tears\, smiles and struggles up close. Ricky feels that music therapy and the open discussion that follows can lead broken souls to find that little bit of happiness – and encouragement they need to move forward. \nHe presents on the benefits of a sober lifestyle and likes talking to youth\, who are at that age\, where pressures and experimenting can often lead them down a crooked and deadly path. Ricky takes pride in also educating those individuals  in our communities that are somehow unaware and uninformed of the deadly drug and alcohol pandemic we are facing in this country. \nIn 2017\, Ricky received the Drug Free Heroes Award\, presented by Foundation For a Drug free World. He is proud to help others find a message and purpose to getting clean and sober. \nCosponsored by: Monmouth University’s Office of Substance Awareness\, Students in Recovery\, Student Activities Board\, The Music and Theatre Department\nFREE and OPEN to the public\, but registration is recommended.

SUMMARY:Heidi Rose Performance Artist in Mirror Image and Twin
DESCRIPTION:Mirror Image: Two cousins are born five months apart to identical twin mothers. Shaped by their mothers’ careers as 1950s pop singers\, these women both complement and contradict one another as their lives unfold. Mirror Image reveals a life and relationship that now exist only in dreams\, memories… and on stage. \nTwin: Identical twin girls each have a personality that is in some ways too big for their bodies. Too big to control. Too big to contain. They have lived their whole lives off-balance. Would they have been better proportioned had the egg not split? This performance is presented as a work in progress. \nThere will also be a post-show discussion following the performance. \nCo-sponsored by: the Monmouth University Communication and Gender Studies Department\, CommWorks: Students Committed to Performance\, the MU Master’s Program in Corporate and Public Communication\, and The Center for the Arts \nDr. Heidi Rose holds a B.S. in Speech/Theatre from Northwestern University\, an M.A. in Communication from Emerson College\, and an Interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Communication and Performance Studies from Arizona State University. She is currently associate professor in Communication\, with an emphasis on performance studies\, and director of the graduate program in Communication at Villanova University. Dr. Rose’s teaching and research focus primarily on performance\, culture\, and identity. \nDr. Rose’s research has been supported by grants from Villanova University\, the National Endowment for the Humanities\, and the Waterhouse Family Institute for the Study of Communication and Society. Her current projects examine Jamaican theatre and post-colonial identity\, and the phenomenology of auto/biographical solo performance. Her two solo performances\, Mirror Image and Good Enough\, explore individual identities across generation and time periods. A third piece\, Twin\, is currently being workshopped and will complete the family trilogy. \nDr. Rose was Editor-in-Chief for Text and Performance Quarterly\, the flagship journal of performance studies for the National Communication Association 2010-2012. She is president of the board of directors for PlayPenn\, an organization dedicated to the development of new plays and is a member of the National Communication Association\, PSi: Performance Studies International\, and the Eastern Communication Association.

SUMMARY:Women Waging the Way
DESCRIPTION:The event focuses on an important issue that touches all individuals\, equality. Women have made immense progress over the last century in regards to obtaining parity\, but still today women face discrimination based on their gender. Women Waging the Way aims to foster the equality of all humans by showcasing artists of all gender and backgrounds along with art of young girls in India who are currently learning the importance of acceptance through the “Rainbow Program.” The Rainbow Program is a school in Loreto Sealdah\, Kolkata\, India that works to integrate girls of diverse socio-economic backgrounds and foster the common goal of breaking the cycle of poverty and empowerment through education. \nThe event will take place on one night and will showcase fine art\, theater\, and music through two “acts.” All artwork will be displayed on easels in a semi-circle on the stage and will serve as a “backdrop” for Act 1. Act 1 will consist of performances by young artists who will present songs\, skits\, and other performances that focus on the theme of the night. During Act 2\, attendees will be offered the opportunity to view the art up close and take part in a silent auction. There will be a mix of art from local artists that will be up for auction and artwork from children who are currently enrolled in the “Rainbow Program.” \nThe net-profits will be donated to Women and Girls Education International (WAGE International)\, a 501(c)(3) organization based in Monmouth County that works to empower through education. \nThis event is sponsored by the Monmouth University Center for the Arts.
