SUMMARY:Supporting Systems and Communities in Achieving Racial Equality: A Groundwater Analysis - presented by Joyce James
DESCRIPTION:Voices for Change: Voting\, Advocacy\, and Action\nIn this presentation\, Ms. James will share her journey in developing the Texas Model for addressing Disproportionality and Disparities and the Groundwater Analysis for Addressing Racial Inequities© as the foundation for creating antiracist organizational cultures for undoing institutional and structural racism and improving outcomes for all populations. Participants will gain an increased understanding of the importance of cross systems collaborations and building partnerships with poor communities of color to remove the barriers that contribute to racial inequities. The session will include discussion of the pitfalls of well-meaning and well-intentioned leaders\, who in isolation of an analysis of institutional and structural racism\, and a racial equity lens\, continue to unconsciously contribute to sustaining and often perpetuating racial inequities in the design and delivery of programs and services.

SUMMARY:Council of Endowed Chairs Fall Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Future generations\, wildlife\, and natural resources – collectively referred to as “the voiceless” in this presentation – are the most vulnerable and least equipped populations to protect themselves from the impacts of global climate change. This presentation first identifies the common vulnerabilities of the voiceless in the Anthropocene era. It then proposes how the law can evolve to protect their interests more effectively through a stewardship-focused and rights-based system derived from the mandate inherent in the concept of sustainable development. \nThis presentation\, sponsored by the Monmouth University Council of Endowed Chairs\, is drawn from Professor Randall S.\, Abate’s forthcoming book\, which will be published by Cambridge University Press in October 2019.

SUMMARY:Climate Change\, Coasts & Communities Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The “new normal” of increased storm events\, flooding\, sea level rise\, and coastal erosion from climate change presents daunting adaptation challenges for New Jersey in the years ahead. This symposium features leading experts in climate change adaptation law and science to discuss lessons learned from other states and countries to assist New Jersey in navigating these challenges. \n \nTopics will include: \n\nS. and Australian case studies in coastal adaptation;\nPublic health dimensions of coastal adaptation;\nHuman rights impacts to vulnerable coastal communities;\nClimate change impacts to “voiceless” communities (future generations\, wildlife\, and natural resources);\nStrategies to combat climate change-induced and other anthropogenic factors in eutrophication of coastal marine ecosystems\, and the impacts to ecosystem services and the communities who depend on them.\n\nVisit the symposium web site for a full list of speakers and more event details. Admission is free for Monmouth employees and students (registration required)\, $35 for the general public\, and $25 for Monmouth alumni and non-Monmouth students. (Cost covers Wednesday evening reception and Thursday breakfast\, lunch and refreshments.) \nFor more information\, contact Professor Randall S. Abate at 732-571-3641 or rabate@monmouth.edu. \n\nSymposium Information and Registration\n\n

SUMMARY:eDNA: A Forensic Approach to Fish Detection
DESCRIPTION:Monmouth and Rockefeller universities are pioneering a marine life detection technique that holds the promise of being less expensive\, more humane and more revealing than other longstanding scientific methods. Faculty and students from both institutions have been conducting research in water bodies along the New Jersey and New York coasts using environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling\, an approach that allows scientists to confirm the presence of fish and other organisms by testing for trace amounts of genetic material that they shed into the water. \nJoin us for a free panel discussion that breaks down the science of eDNA and provides an update on what area waterways will be studied next. Pizza and refreshments will be served. \nPANELISTS \n\nJason Adolf\, Monmouth University Endowed Professor of Marine Science\nJesse Ausubel\, Director\, Rockefeller University Program for the Human Environment\nKeith Dunton\, Monmouth University Assistant Professor\, Department of Biology\nMark Stoeckle\, Senior Research Associate\, Rockefeller University Program for the Human Environment\n\nFor more information\, contact Karl Vilacoba at 732-571-3688 or kvilacob@monmouth.edu.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Les Saisons (Seasons)
DESCRIPTION:After traveling the world alongside migrating birds and diving the oceans in the acclaimed nature documentaries Winged Migrations and Oceans\, Jacques Perrin and Jacques Cluzaud return to the lush green forests that emerged across Europe following the last Ice Age. Winter had gone on for 80\,000 years when\, in a short period of time the ice retreated\, the landscape metamorphosed\, the cycle of seasons was established and the beasts occupied their new kingdom. Les Saisons\, with its exceptional footage of animals in the wild\, is the awe-inspiring and thought-provoking tale of the long shared history that binds humankind with the natural world. \nThe film will be introduced by Rockefeller University Professor Jesse Ausubel\, who served as a science advisor to Les Saisons’ directors. \nThis free and public event is being offered as part of the Monmouth University Urban Coast Institute’s 2017 Spring Film Series. \nFor more information\, contact Karl Vilacoba at 732-571-3688 or kvilacob@monmouth.edu. \nRegister Online

SUMMARY:A Plastic Ocean
DESCRIPTION:In A Plastic Ocean\, an international team of adventurers\, researchers\, and ocean ambassadors go on a mission around the globe to uncover the shocking truth about what is truly lurking beneath the surface of our seemingly pristine Ocean. The result will astound viewers – just as it did our adventurers – who captured never-before-seen images of marine life\, plastic pollution\, and its ultimate consequences for human health. During its four-year production period\, A Plastic Ocean was filmed in 20 locations around the world in beautiful and chilling detail to document the global effects of plastic pollution – and introduce workable technology and policy solutions that can\, if implemented in time\, change things for the better. \nThis free film screening will be followed by a Q&A session with Bayshore Recycling Vice President of Operations Gary Sondermeyer\, who will provide an important and interesting perspective on controlling plastic waste and marine debris. \nFor additional information\, please contact Karl Vilacoba at 732-571-3688 or kvilacob@monmouth.edu. \nEvent Information and Registration
