SUMMARY:Sexual Assault Examination Across the Lifespan
DESCRIPTION:Fee: $875\nPlease Note: Registration will close on June 1. \nStudy materials will be provided for completion prior to the start of the course June 2. Post course assignments must be completed by July 10.\nSixty-eight contact hours will be provided. (In addition to the classroom hours\, approximately 44 hours of self-directed study including pre-course assignments\, homework and post-course assignments will be required). \nThis course reflects the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) standards for adolescent\, adult\, and pediatric SANE education and the requirements of the NJ Board of Nursing for Forensic Nurse Examiner Education. This program is designed for the RN with at least 2 years recent clinical experience\, for MU Forensic Nursing Students\, this course satisfies requirements for the SANE course in the certificate and MSN program. \nDesired Learning Outcome\nRegistered nurses and advanced practice nurses will demonstrate knowledge and skill to provide competent\, comprehensive\, patient-centered\, coordinated care to patients across the lifespan (geriatric\, adult\, adolescent\, and pediatric) who are being evaluated for sexual assault\, or suspected of having been sexually assaulted. \nTopics will include: forensic nursing and sexual violence\, victim responses and crisis intervention\, child sexual abuse\, interdisciplinary collaboration\, medical forensic history-taking\, observing and assessing physical examination findings\, medical forensic specimen collection\, medical forensic photography\, sexually transmitted disease testing and prophylaxis\, pregnancy risk evaluation and care\, medical forensic documentation\, discharge and follow-up planning\, clinical skill demonstrations\, courtroom testimony and legal considerations. \nAbout Our Instructor\nEileen Allen\, MSN\, RN\, FN-CSA\, SANE-A\, SANE –P: Nationally certified sexual assault examiner & practicing forensic nurse\, coordinator of the Monmouth County FNE/SART program. Licensed professional counseling accreditation recognizes either of these professional bodies and will accept these credit hours. \nProgram Description\nThis presentation will outline the societal impact of pain and the importance of pain as a major healthcare issue. The opioid crisis has intensified the need to explore integrative approaches to pain management. Yet\, in spite of this growing concern\, the evidence-base for nonpharmacologic pain care is not widely disseminated. This course will outline the role of evidence-based strategies as options in comprehensive pain care. The instructor will cover modalities shown to be effective and how they can be integrated for common pain conditions. \nTopics will include:\n\nThe impact of pain & the current status of pain management\nThe need for interdisciplinary and multimodal care\nProcess and success in changing policy for comprehensive pain care\nAn overview of effective evidence-based options for comprehensive pain management\nBest practices and considerations for when referring to healthcare providers\n\nAbout Our Presenter\nDr Arya Nielsen is an Assistant Clinical Professor at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in the Department of Family Medicine & Community Health. For over 40 years Dr. Nielsen has been a leader in integrating acupuncture practice to the Western conventional setting both in terms of safety\, standards of practice\, policy and procedures and presentation of the research evidence-base. She is the past Chair of the New York State Board for Acupuncture\, and the Policy Working Group for the Academic Consortium for Integrative Medicine & Health; the 75 North American member organization of academic medical centers and health systems that support utilization of evidence-based nonpharmacologic therapies as integrative medical care. DESCRIPTION:This workshop is designed to provide health care professionals with a better understanding of the complex decision making process that is involved in the planning of end-of-life care. The instructors will explore and review end-of life care choices such as hospice\, palliative care and advanced directives. The patients’ perspective will be presented\, highlighting research on “The inner life at the end of life\,” life reviews and attitudes toward death. Participants will engage in a simulated medical decision process and analyze different types of advanced directives. DESCRIPTION:The purpose of this program is to prepare the registered nurse for the clinical aspects of the adult/adolescent sexual assault medical-forensic examination. Participation is limited to nurses who have completed a didactic course of SANE/SAFE training. \nThis 2-day live training experience provides the attendee with an opportunity to observe and demonstrate clinical skills used during the assessment and treatment of adolescent and adult victims of sexual assault. \nParticipants will observe and demonstrate the following techniques: \n\nSpecimen collection and packaging\nPhoto-documentation of findings\nGenital inspection and pelvic examination\nThe use of supplies and equipment specific to completion of a forensic medical sexual assault evaluation.\n\nFee: $450 \n16.0 nursing continuing education contact hours will be provided by the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN).
