DESCRIPTION:Lecture: September 23\, 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. in Wilson Hall Auditorium \nOpening reception: Fri. September. 23\, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. \nBruce Dorfman has had fifty-three solo exhibitions throughout the United States and abroad. His work has been presented in numerous museum and university collections and gallery group exhibitions worldwide\, including currently “Ways and Means: A New Look at Process in Art”\, July 18 – October 7\, 2016 at UBS Art Gallery\, NYC; June Kelly Gallery\, NYC and “Making/Breaking Traditions: The Teachers of Ai Weiwei”\, Art Students League\, NYC (2014). \nDorfman is the recipient of many awards\, grants and fellowships including: New York State Council on the Arts; Fulbright Fellowship; Rockefeller Foundation; U.S. Department of State; New York World’s Fair Invitational; National Academy of Design; Butler Institute of American Art and a major grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. His work has been written about in The New York Times\, Art in America\, ARTnews and City Arts. \nBruce Dorfman has taught at the Art Students League of New York since 1964. Dorfman also taught at the New School\, Syracuse University\, the Everson Museum\, and was Artist-in-Residence at the Norton Museum\, Fla. From 1993 to 1996\, he was a guest-artist at museums\, and art institutions in Venezuela\, Portugal and France. \nBruce Dorfman studied at the Art Students League of New York. SUMMARY:Visiting Writers: The Breakbeat Poets
DESCRIPTION:Hip-Hop is the largest youth culture in the history of the planet rock. It has produced generations of artists who have revolutionized their genre(s) by applying the aesthetic innovations of the culture. \nThe BreakBeat Poets features 78 poets\, born somewhere between 1961-1999\, All-City and Coast-to-Coast\, who are creating the next and now movement(s) in American letters. This is the first poetry anthology by and for the Hip-Hop generation. It is for people who love Hip-Hop\, for fans of the culture\, for people who’ve never read a poem\, for people who thought poems were only something done by dead white dudes who got lost in a forest\, and for poetry heads. This anthology is meant to expand the idea of who a poet is and what a poem is for. \nThe BreakBeat Poets are the scribes recording and remixing a fuller spectrum of experience of what it means to be alive in this moment. The BreakBeat Poets are a break with the past and an honoring of the tradition(s)\, an undeniable body expanding the canon for the fresher.

DESCRIPTION:Made up of women from both sides of the 1994 Rwandan genocide\, Rwanda’s first and only all women’s drum troupe\, Ingoma Nshya\, offers a place of support\, healing and reconciliation. When the group decides to partner with two young American\nentrepreneurs to open Rwanda’s first ever ice cream shop\, these remarkable women embark on a journey of independence\, peace and possibility. SWEET DREAMS interweaves heart-wrenching stories of tragedy with powerful examples of hope and resilience to present a moving portrait of a country in transition. \nThere will be a Q&A with Co-Directors Lisa Fruchtman and Rob Fruchtman following the screening. \nRUN TIME: 1 hour 30 minutes \nOn Screen/In Person is a program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation made possible through the generous support of the National Endowment for the Arts. SUMMARY:William Close and the Earth Harp Collective
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS EVENT HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED FROM JAN. 23\, 2016 \n William Close and the Earth Harp Collective recently pushed the boundaries of the “performance experience” when they finished third on NBC’s hit show “America’s Got Talent.” The group received massive praise and admiration from fans and all three judges. William Close is an installation artist and musician who has developed over 100 new types of musical instruments. He is the inventor of the majestic stringed instrument\, The Earth Harp\, the world’s largest stringed instrument. Featuring the Earth Harp at the center of the group and many other signature instruments designed by Close\, William and the Earth Harp Collective is the latest adventure in the innovator’s already outstanding career.  \nWilliam’s work explores the connection between architecture and music.  Inspired by the Frank Lloyd Wright quote “architecture is frozen music\,” Close creates musical installations that use the architecture as part of the instrument.
