SUMMARY:Walnut Street Theatre’s Last of the Red Hot Lovers
DESCRIPTION:America in the 1960s\, an era that encouraged LOVE\, was populated by “Mad Men” and “Mod Women” trying to navigate the new normal. In this freshly conceived production of Neil Simon’s classic\, Last of the Red Hot Lovers\, true comedy ensues when a modern man in the hip sixties looks for something new and different\, but ends up finding himself in the same situation\, again and again…and again! \nBarney Cashman is middle-aged\, married\, overworked and overweight. It’s finally his turn to join the sexual revolution… before it’s too late. With no experience in covert maneuvers\, he arranges three attempted trysts. His targets; a bawdy bundle of fun who likes smooth whiskey and other women’s husbands\, a young actress too kooky for words\, and a neurotic housewife who happens to be married to his best friend. And through all the mishaps and laughter\, Barney begins to rediscover his humanity and what he thought was missing all along.\nLast of the Red Hot Lovers had a lengthy run on Broadway and was made into a hit film starring Alan Arkin and Sally Kellerman. \nWalnut Street Theatre\, America’s Oldest Theatre\, celebrated 200 years of great entertainment in 2009. Most noteworthy American actors of the 19th century and many from the 20th century have appeared on stage at the Walnut. Some of the Walnut’s shining stars include: Edwin Forrest\, Edwin Booth\, the Drews\, the Barrymores\, George M. Cohan\, Will Rogers\, The Marx Brothers\, Helen Hayes\, Henry Fonda\, Katharine Hepburn\, Marlon Brando\, Jessica Tandy\, Ethel Waters\, Audrey Hepburn\, Sidney Poitier\, Lauren Bacall\, George C. Scott\, Jane Fonda\, Robert Redford\, Julie Harris\, Jack Lemon\, and William Shatner. \nThe theatre has been home to many pre-Broadway try-outs of plays that would go on to become American classics\, such as A Streetcar Named Desire starring Marlon Brando\, A Raisin in the Sun featuring Sydney Poitier\, The Diary of Anne Frank featuring Susan Strasberg\, Mister Roberts\, starring Henry Fonda\, and Neil Simon’s first Broadway play\, Come Blow Your Horn. \nThe Walnut began its most recent incarnation as a self-producing\, non-profit regional theatre when Bernard Havard took the helm in 1982\, founding the Walnut Street Theatre Company with a vision of once again creating theatre in a space that is so steeped in the American theatre’s traditions and history. DESCRIPTION:The Twentieth-Century was a dangerous time to be young. Before vaccines\, there were a multitude of diseases that too often kept children from reaching even their teenage years.  From the throws of that environment\, Dr. Maurice Hilleman would emerge to lead a revolution in vaccine innovation and save many millions of young lives each year. But after being forced to retire at the height of his productivity in 1985\, Hilleman watched as one company after another began to abandon vaccine research.  When parents began choosing not to vaccinate their children in the 1990s the cruel irony became clear; Hilleman’s unprecedented successes had allowed us to forget just how devastating childhood diseases could be. \nThere will be a post screening Q&A with the director Donald Rayne Mitchell. \nRun Time: 64 minutes\nOn Screen/In Person is a program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation made possible through the generous support of the National Endowment for the Arts. DESCRIPTION:Lecture: Feb. 2\, from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. in  Wilson Hall Auditorium \nOpening reception: Friday\, Feb. 2\, from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. \nDrones are in the news. They carry out targeted killings; they are manned with cameras to record movements on the ground; hobbyists fly them in public spaces; Amazon wants to use them to deliver their products. Appropriating visual juxtapositions from the surrealists and kitsch sic-fi invasion films\, Drones is a series of photo-collages that put flying objects into our aerial landscapes. \nThis series includes landscapes from US\, Ecuador and other unidentifiable locations. “The Drones” function like a photographic bricolage of buildings. The cut of a scissors and Photoshop suggest something crucial about Drones: their immediate extraterrestrial appearance places them in a space between reality and fiction mirroring our own abstract experience (via the Internet). \nBio: \nKarina Aguilera Skvirsky is a multi-disciplinary artist who works in photography\, video and performance. Her work has been exhibited internationally in group and solo exhibitions. In 2010 she participated in There is always a cup of sea for man to sail\, the 29th Sao Paolo Biennial (2010)\, where she exhibited work from her project\, Memories of Development. In 2015 she was awarded a Fulbright grant and a Jerome Foundation Grant to produce “The Perilous Journey of Maria Palacios”\, a performance based film that will premier in 2016 at the Cuenca Biennial\, Ecuador. Artist in Residence programs she has participated in include: Office Hours\, at El museo del barrio\, NY\, NY; LMCC Workspace\, NY\, NY; MacDowell Residency\, NH; Smackmellon\, Brooklyn\, NY and others. Skvirsky is an Associate Professor at Lafayette College\, Easton\, PA and an MFA faculty member at the The New School\, Parsons School of Design\, NY\, NY. SUMMARY:Visiting Writers: Gerald Stern
DESCRIPTION:Gerald Stern was born in Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania in 1925 and was educated at the University of Pittsburgh and Columbia University.  He is the author of 16 books of poetry\, including\, most recently\, Divine Nothingness (Norton\, 2014) and In Beauty Bright (Norton\, 2012)\, as well as This Time:  New and Selected Poems\, which won the 1998 National Book Award and a kind-of memoir of a year in 85 sections titled Stealing History\, was published by Trinity University Press in the spring of 2012.  Stern was awarded the 2005 Wallace Stevens Award by the Academy of American Poets\, was the 2010 recipient of the Medal of Honor in Poetry by the American Academy of Arts and Letters\, he was inducted into the 2012 class of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and was the 2012 recipient of the Rebekah Johnson Bobbitt National Prize for Poetry from the Library of Congress.  He was the 2014 winner of the Frost Medal. Stern has two books coming out in 2017\, a poetry collection from W. W. Norton called Galaxy Love and a book of non-fiction titled Deathwatch\, to be released by Trinity University Press.

SUMMARY:Jerry Zolten: We Were What We Laughed At! An American Cultural History through the Art of Stand-Up Comedy
DESCRIPTION:Jerry Zolten\, educator\, author\, musician\, roots music historian and producer\, also counts among his credits a stint as a stand-up comic. He will give a presentation on the history of stand up comedy that is richly illustrated with rare video performance clips. The talk will explore comedy as it relates to issues including ethnic stereotyping\, freedom of speech\, social injustice\, and race and gender disparity. \nMotivated by his love of comedy and the power of the best comedians to shake up thinking on a range of significant social issues\, Zolten dug into the history of American stand-up and over the years interviewed and published profiles of luminaries including Carl Reiner\, Steve Allen\, Dick Gregory\, George Carlin\, and Woody Allen\, to name a few. \nHis collaborations on roots music projects with noted satirists Robert Crumb and Harvey Pekar have led to guest appearances on public radio’s American Routes and as a featured speaker at Nashville’s Country Music Hall of Fame. \nHe is the author of Great God A’Mighty! The Dixie Hummingbirds: Celebrating the Rise of Soul Gospel Music (Oxford University Press)\, co-editor of Bruce Springsteen\, Cultural Studies\, and the Runaway American Dream (Ashgate)\, and contributor to The Cambridge Companion to the Beatles (Cambridge University Press). \nZolten contributed to two 2015 Grammy-Winning projects\, The Rise and Fall of Paramount Records\, Volumes 1 & 2 (Revenant/Third Man) and The Fairfield Four’s Still Rockin’ My Soul!. \nHis most recent work includes an article on the centennial of the iconic Martin Dreadnought Guitar for the C.F. SUMMARY:Aquila Theatre’s Much Ado About Nothing
DESCRIPTION:Shakespeare’s great comedy\, Much Ado About Nothing\, highlights Aquila Theatre’s 25th anniversary season. Spying\, subterfuge\, deception\, false identities\, slander\, manipulation and love all take part in this wonderfully entertaining battle of the sexes. Much Ado About Nothing\, thought to have been written in 1598\, belongs to a group of Shakespeare’s more mature romantic comedies. It is an exuberant\, philosophical\, and festive play exceling in combative wit\, melodrama\, and potential tragedy. Much Ado About Nothing is wonderfully intricate\, flush with surprising twists and turns\, and articulated in expert language. Aquila Theatre’s original Much Ado opened in Boston and toured the United States in 2000/2001. It was performed in 60 American cities\, ran for nearly a year including Off Broadway in New York\, was performed at the White House for the President and First Lady\, and was then revived at the La Jolla Playhouse in 2006. The New York Times described the show as “Outstanding . . . almost unbearable fun. . . gleefully engaging . . . and directed with inspiration.” The New Yorker hailed it as “Just plain cool . . . beautifully spoken\, dramatically revealing\, and crystalline in effect.” Aquila’s original Much Ado was a Critic’s Choice for Time Out\, The Village Voice and The New York Times. \nThere will be a preshow talk at 6:00 PM with the cast the day of show.

DESCRIPTION:Free and Open to the Public \n Performance\n11:30am-1:30pm\, Rebecca Stafford Student Center \nArtist’s Talk 4:30pm\,\nClub Dining Room \nAfter typing more than 2\,500 postcards to the President from dozens of campuses and other locations around the country\, Sheryl Oring’s I WISH TO SAY is coming to Monmouth to engage students in discussions about politics and social change.\nOring sets up a pop-up public office on campus–complete with a manual typewriter–and invites students to dictate postcards to the next President. \nSheryl Oring’s work examines social issues through projects that incorporate old and new media to tell stories\, examine public opinion and foster open exchange. Oring’s work has been shown at Bryant Park in New York City; the Berlin Wall Memorial; the Jewish Museum Berlin; the 01SJ Biennial in San Jose\, CA; the San Diego Museum of Art; as well as in major festivals such as Encuentro in São Paulo\, Brazil\, the Art Prospect Festival in St. Petersburg\, Russia\, and Art in Odd Places in New York City. She recently completed a large-scale public art installation at the San Diego International Airport and currently works as an Assistant Professor of Art at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Oring is the recipient of grants from Franklin Furnace and Creative Capital. Her forthcoming book Activating Democracy: The I Wish to Say Project is due out in Fall 2016 from Intellect Books/University of Chicago Press.

DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS EVENT HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED FROM JAN. 23\, 2016 \n William Close and the Earth Harp Collective recently pushed the boundaries of the “performance experience” when they finished third on NBC’s hit show “America’s Got Talent.” The group received massive praise and admiration from fans and all three judges. William Close is an installation artist and musician who has developed over 100 new types of musical instruments. He is the inventor of the majestic stringed instrument\, The Earth Harp\, the world’s largest stringed instrument. Featuring the Earth Harp at the center of the group and many other signature instruments designed by Close\, William and the Earth Harp Collective is the latest adventure in the innovator’s already outstanding career.  \nWilliam’s work explores the connection between architecture and music.  Inspired by the Frank Lloyd Wright quote “architecture is frozen music\,” Close creates musical installations that use the architecture as part of the instrument. It has produced generations of artists who have revolutionized their genre(s) by applying the aesthetic innovations of the culture. \nThe BreakBeat Poets features 78 poets\, born somewhere between 1961-1999\, All-City and Coast-to-Coast\, who are creating the next and now movement(s) in American letters. This is the first poetry anthology by and for the Hip-Hop generation. It is for people who love Hip-Hop\, for fans of the culture\, for people who’ve never read a poem\, for people who thought poems were only something done by dead white dudes who got lost in a forest\, and for poetry heads. This anthology is meant to expand the idea of who a poet is and what a poem is for. \nThe BreakBeat Poets are the scribes recording and remixing a fuller spectrum of experience of what it means to be alive in this moment. His work has been presented in numerous museum and university collections and gallery group exhibitions worldwide\, including currently “Ways and Means: A New Look at Process in Art”\, July 18 – October 7\, 2016 at UBS Art Gallery\, NYC; June Kelly Gallery\, NYC and “Making/Breaking Traditions: The Teachers of Ai Weiwei”\, Art Students League\, NYC (2014). \nDorfman is the recipient of many awards\, grants and fellowships including: New York State Council on the Arts; Fulbright Fellowship; Rockefeller Foundation; U.S. Department of State; New York World’s Fair Invitational; National Academy of Design; Butler Institute of American Art and a major grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. His work has been written about in The New York Times\, Art in America\, ARTnews and City Arts. \nBruce Dorfman has taught at the Art Students League of New York since 1964. DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Jewish Cultural Studies Program at Monmouth University. \nHad there been a planetarium in 19th-century Galicia\, or a kosher deli in Depression-era Kentucky\, Andy Statman’s music might have been playing in the background. Meandering through time\, geography and\nculture in a few passionate\, organic gusts of music\, neither the man nor his inimitable hybrid sound has a very clearly defined “before” or “after.” Statman\, one of his generation’s premier mandolinists and clarinetists\, thinks of his compositions as “a spontaneous\, American-roots form of very personal\, prayerful Hasidic music\, by way of avant-garde jazz.” \nThis modest man takes for granted that a performer might embody several worlds in his art\, and seems not to recognize that his music\, like his story\, is extraordinary. It’s a story Statman rewrites with his trio every time they perform: “We’re creating an experience between the audience and us.” Statman performs his distinctive\, unconstrained meditations on jazz\, klezmer\, bluegrass and the human soul with bassist Jim Whitney and percussionist Larry Eagle. “At a certain point\, we’re just talking\, just having a threeway conversation.” This “conversation” changes each time they have it on stage\, no melody sounding quite the same as it did before\, and none bearing the definitive stamp of the genre that spawned it. A totally unselfconscious performer\, Statman does not mind that many audiences leave slightly befuddled as to what kind\nof music\, exactly\, they have just heard.
