SUMMARY:BLACK MARIA FILM FESTIVAL
DESCRIPTION:The Black Maria Film Festival was founded in 1981 as a tribute to Thomas Edison’s development of the motion picture at his laboratory\, dubbed the “Black Maria” film studio\, the first in the world\, in West Orange\, NJ. Now in its 36th year\, the festival attracts and showcases the work of independent filmmakers internationally. The festival is a project of the Thomas A. Edison Media Arts Consortium\, an independent non-profit organization in residence at New Jersey City University’s Department of Media Arts. Unlike other major film festivals\, the Black Maria Festival is not presented in only one location. Instead\, the winning films are presented at universities\, museums\, libraries and cultural centers across the country all year.

SUMMARY:SONGWRITERS BY THE SEA
DESCRIPTION:Distinguished NJ Songwriters\nJoe Rapolla and Joe D’Urso are back this year hosting the celebrated Songwriters by\nthe Sea series at the Lauren K. Woods Theatre. What once started in a small\ncoffee shop as an area for local songwriters has now grown into a series that\nfeatures some of the top songwriters in the country. This year\, the show features\n \n\nJames Maddock\, a fixture on the Folk and Americana scene and expatriate Irish writer and musician Larry Kirwan.  \nAn April 2014 review in Relix Magazine puts it this way: “James Maddock possesses the kind of lived-in craggy voice that would sound authoritative if he were singing the sports pages. Fortunately\, he doesn’t need to do that because his compositional skills are a match for his delivery.” After fronting the Columbia Records band Wood\, whose debut Songs From Stamford Hill was featured prominently on TV shows such as “Dawson’s Creek\,” Maddock moved from England to New York City in 2003. His 2009 album Sunrise On Avenue C won a New York Music Award for Best Americana Album\, while follow-up Wake Up And Dream ranked among the top albums of 2011 in WFUV’s (NYC) Listener Poll. He has performed with Bruce Springsteen\, Willie Nile\, Aaron Comess (Spin Doctors) and David Immergluck (Counting Crows). \nLarry Kirwan\n(born in Wexford\, Ireland) is an expatriate Irish writer and musician\, most\nnoted as the lead singer for the New York-based Irish rock band\, Black 47 Kirwan has also written\nand produced eleven plays and musicals\, some of which have been performed in\nthe United States and Europe. The plays deal mainly with Irish history and\npolitics.   \nMonmouth University Blue Hawk Records’ artists Julia Whary\, Nicole Govel\, and guest Isabella Rose\, will open the show.Sponsored by the Leon Hess Business School and Business Council

SUMMARY:The Mitzvah
DESCRIPTION:The Mitzvah (“The Good Deed”) is a one-person play that dramatically explores one of the most shocking stories of the Second World War. More than a hundred thousand German men — classified as “mischlinge” (the derogatory term the Nazis used to describe those descended from one or two Jewish grandparents) — fought in the German armed forces. After the play there will be a post-performance lecture and audience discussion led by Grunwald.  \nThe story of one such mischling is at the center of The Mitzvah and actor (and child of survivor) Roger Grunwald seamlessly transforms himself into an array of characters to tell that story. In addition to Christoph (the “mischling”)\, other characters include Schmuel\, a Polish Jew from Bialystok and the play’s Chorus who offers edgy commentary that probes the boundary between the absurd and the horrific. The Mitzvah is a touching and tragic tale told in a powerful one-act solo performance created by Grunwald and Broadway veteran Annie McGreevey. \nThe Mitzvah adds to the historical narratives about The Holocaust at a time when few survivors remain to tell their stories to younger generations and was inspired by the lives of Grunwald’s mother and aunt\, survivors of Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen\, respectively. It premiered at the Emerging Artists Theatre’s “Illuminating Artists: One Man Talking” festival in New York City and is currently being presented in theaters\, universities and Jewish organizations around the country. \nThrough one soldier’s story\, The Mitzvah reveals the startling history of tens of thousands of “partial Jews” who served in Hitler’s military\, most of whom were discharged in 1940. Nearly all were sent to forced labor camps — or worse. However\, a few thousand who had an “Aryan appearance” and who were deemed by the Reich to be “valuable to the war effort\,” were exempted from the Nazi race laws. A “Declaration of German Blood” (a Deutschblütigkeitserklärung) — signed by Hitler himself — allowed these select few thousand mischlinge to fight for the Nazi cause. SUMMARY:Visiting Writers: Liz Moore
DESCRIPTION:Liz Moore is a writer of fiction and creative nonfiction.
Her first novel\, The Words of Every Song (Broadway Books\, 2007)\, centers on a fictional record company in New York City just after the turn of the millennium. It draws partly on Liz’s own experiences as a musician. It was selected for Borders’ Original Voices program and was given a starred review by Kirkus.Roddy Doyle wrote of it\, “This is a remarkable novel\, elegant\, wise\, and beautifully constructed. I loved the book.”

After the publication of her debut novel\, Liz obtained her MFA in Fiction from Hunter College. In 2009\, she was awarded the University of Pennsylvania’s ArtsEdge residency and moved to Philadelphia\, where she still lives. She is now an Assistant Professor of Writing at Holy Family University.

Her second novel\, Heft\, was published by W.W. Norton in January 2012 to popular and critical acclaim. Of Heft\, The New Yorker wrote\, “Moore’s characters are lovingly drawn…a truly original voice”; The San Francisco Chronicle wrote\, “Few novelists of recent memory have put our bleak isolation into words as clearly as Liz Moore does in her new novel”; and editor Sara Nelson wrote in O\, The Oprah Magazine\, “Beautiful…Stunningly sad and heroically hopeful.” The novel was published in five countries\, was long-listed for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award\, and was included on several “Best of 2012” lists\, including those of NPR and the Apple iBookstore.

Moore’s short fiction and creative nonfiction have appeared in venues such as Tin House\, The New York Times\, and Narrative Magazine. She is the winner of the Medici Book Club Prize and Philadelphia’s Athenaeum Literary Award. After winning a 2014 Rome Prize in Literature\, she spent 2014-15 at the American Academy in Rome\, completing her third novel. \nThat novel\, The Unseen World\, is forthcoming from W.W. Norton. in July 2016.

SUMMARY:Another Night of Acapella Harmony: Doo Wop Explosion II
DESCRIPTION:Our celebration of doo wop acappella harmony at the Pollak Theatre is back by popular demand. Born on the street corners of urban America\, rhythm & blues and doo wop singing reached its peak in the 1950’s\, but still has a strong following today.  While doo wop singing began as an African American art form\, by the late 1950’s it was enjoyed by singers of all races.  Doo wop harmony in its purist form is acappella (without instruments or musical tracks).   \nWe’ve again assembled some of the top acappella doo wop vocal groups from NYC to Washington DC.  Headlining the concert will be R&B and Doo Wop favorites\, Pookie Hudson’s Spaniels along with Vito & the Salutations.   The Spaniels are known for the 1956 million seller\, “Goodnight Sweetheart Goodnight\,” a song that defined the whole doo wop era.  The current group backed lead singer Pookie Hudson before his passing in 2006 and continues the Spaniels’ tradition of superb doo wop harmony.  Originating on the streets of Brooklyn\, Vito & the Salutations scored regional hits in the early 1960’s with their recordings of “Gloria\,” “Unchained Melody” and “Your Way”.  Rick Anthony has been handling most of the group’s leads for the past 15 years\, as the original Vito is no longer with them.  The group also contains long time member\, Shelly Buchansky\, who sang on “Unchained Melody” and many of their other hits.  While both Pookie Hudson’s Spaniels and Vito & the Salutations almost always sing with bands\, we’ve persuaded both to do this concert acappella\, harking back to their early days singing on the street corners. Returning from our last acappella concert are two of the groups that excel every time they perform.  The Philadelphia acappella group Quiet Storm remains one of the areas’ top vocal groups.  Re-MemberThen did a fabulous job last time\, on their own set and backing Larry Chance.  New to the concert this year are A Perfect Blend and the Copians.  A Perfect Blend is a great acappella group from Philadelphia who have been singing since 1990\, and had previously won the talent contest on the nationally syndicated “Showtime At The Apollo” TV show.  The Copians  are made up of former members of other standout Philly acappella groups.  Enjoy another night of Doo Wop Acappella Harmony.  \n[This line up is subject to change] \nA “Meet & Greet” Reception will be held prior to the concert for those holding Golden Seat Tickets.

Set in the\nsummer of 1936\, during the Celtic harvest festival Lughnasa\, the play is told\nthrough the memories of Michael\, recalling those days of growing up in the\nnorthwest county of Donegal with his mother\, her three sisters\, and an uncle\npriest recently returned from his missionary days in Africa. The play won Best\nPlay awards from both the Olivier Award in Great Britain and the Tony Award in\nthe US. \n

SUMMARY:Art Now: Hasan Elahi - Tracking Transience - an Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Free and Open to the Public \nHasan Elahi is an interdisciplinary artist working with issues in surveillance\, privacy\, migration\, citizenship\, technology\, and the challenges of borders. An erroneous tip called into law enforcement authorities in 2002 subjected Elahi to an intensive investigation by the FBI and after undergoing months of interrogations\, he was finally cleared of suspicions. After this harrowing experience\, Elahi conceived “Tracking Transience” and opened just about every aspect of his life to the public. Predating the NSA’s PRISM surveillance program by half a decade\, the project questions the consequences of living under constant surveillance and continuously generates databases of imagery that tracks the artist and his points of transit in real-time. Although\ninitially created for his FBI agent\, the public can also monitor the artist’s communication records\, banking transactions\, and transportation logs along with various intelligence and government agencies who have been confirmed visiting his website. \nElahi’s work has been presented in numerous exhibitions at venues such as SITE Santa Fe\, Centre Georges Pompidou\, Sundance Film Festival\, and at the Venice Biennale. Elahi has spoken to audiences as diverse as the Tate Modern\, American Association of Artificial Intelligence\, International Association of Privacy Professionals\, TED Global\, and the World Economic Forum. His work is frequently in the media and has appeared on Al Jazeera\, Fox News\, and on The Colbert Report. In addition to receiving a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2016\, his awards include grants from the Creative Capital Foundation in 2006 and Art Matters Foundation in 2011. In 2014\, he was Artist-in-Residence at Shangri-La/Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art and in 2009\, Resident Faculty at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. In this freshly conceived production of Neil Simon’s classic\, Last of the Red Hot Lovers\, true comedy ensues when a modern man in the hip sixties looks for something new and different\, but ends up finding himself in the same situation\, again and again…and again! \nBarney Cashman is middle-aged\, married\, overworked and overweight. It’s finally his turn to join the sexual revolution… before it’s too late. With no experience in covert maneuvers\, he arranges three attempted trysts. His targets; a bawdy bundle of fun who likes smooth whiskey and other women’s husbands\, a young actress too kooky for words\, and a neurotic housewife who happens to be married to his best friend. And through all the mishaps and laughter\, Barney begins to rediscover his humanity and what he thought was missing all along.\nLast of the Red Hot Lovers had a lengthy run on Broadway and was made into a hit film starring Alan Arkin and Sally Kellerman. \nWalnut Street Theatre\, America’s Oldest Theatre\, celebrated 200 years of great entertainment in 2009. They carry out targeted killings; they are manned with cameras to record movements on the ground; hobbyists fly them in public spaces; Amazon wants to use them to deliver their products. Appropriating visual juxtapositions from the surrealists and kitsch sic-fi invasion films\, Drones is a series of photo-collages that put flying objects into our aerial landscapes. \nThis series includes landscapes from US\, Ecuador and other unidentifiable locations. “The Drones” function like a photographic bricolage of buildings. The cut of a scissors and Photoshop suggest something crucial about Drones: their immediate extraterrestrial appearance places them in a space between reality and fiction mirroring our own abstract experience (via the Internet). \nBio: \nKarina Aguilera Skvirsky is a multi-disciplinary artist who works in photography\, video and performance. Her work has been exhibited internationally in group and solo exhibitions. In 2010 she participated in There is always a cup of sea for man to sail\, the 29th Sao Paolo Biennial (2010)\, where she exhibited work from her project\, Memories of Development. In 2015 she was awarded a Fulbright grant and a Jerome Foundation Grant to produce “The Perilous Journey of Maria Palacios”\, a performance based film that will premier in 2016 at the Cuenca Biennial\, Ecuador. Artist in Residence programs she has participated in include: Office Hours\, at El museo del barrio\, NY\, NY; LMCC Workspace\, NY\, NY; MacDowell Residency\, NH; Smackmellon\, Brooklyn\, NY and others. Skvirsky is an Associate Professor at Lafayette College\, Easton\, PA and an MFA faculty member at the The New School\, Parsons School of Design\, NY\, NY. DESCRIPTION:Gerald Stern was born in Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania in 1925 and was educated at the University of Pittsburgh and Columbia University.  He is the author of 16 books of poetry\, including\, most recently\, Divine Nothingness (Norton\, 2014) and In Beauty Bright (Norton\, 2012)\, as well as This Time:  New and Selected Poems\, which won the 1998 National Book Award and a kind-of memoir of a year in 85 sections titled Stealing History\, was published by Trinity University Press in the spring of 2012.  Stern was awarded the 2005 Wallace Stevens Award by the Academy of American Poets\, was the 2010 recipient of the Medal of Honor in Poetry by the American Academy of Arts and Letters\, he was inducted into the 2012 class of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and was the 2012 recipient of the Rebekah Johnson Bobbitt National Prize for Poetry from the Library of Congress.  He was the 2014 winner of the Frost Medal. Stern has two books coming out in 2017\, a poetry collection from W. W. Norton called Galaxy Love and a book of non-fiction titled Deathwatch\, to be released by Trinity University Press.

SUMMARY:Jerry Zolten: We Were What We Laughed At! An American Cultural History through the Art of Stand-Up Comedy
DESCRIPTION:Jerry Zolten\, educator\, author\, musician\, roots music historian and producer\, also counts among his credits a stint as a stand-up comic. He will give a presentation on the history of stand up comedy that is richly illustrated with rare video performance clips. The talk will explore comedy as it relates to issues including ethnic stereotyping\, freedom of speech\, social injustice\, and race and gender disparity. \nMotivated by his love of comedy and the power of the best comedians to shake up thinking on a range of significant social issues\, Zolten dug into the history of American stand-up and over the years interviewed and published profiles of luminaries including Carl Reiner\, Steve Allen\, Dick Gregory\, George Carlin\, and Woody Allen\, to name a few. \nHis collaborations on roots music projects with noted satirists Robert Crumb and Harvey Pekar have led to guest appearances on public radio’s American Routes and as a featured speaker at Nashville’s Country Music Hall of Fame. \nHe is the author of Great God A’Mighty! The Dixie Hummingbirds: Celebrating the Rise of Soul Gospel Music (Oxford University Press)\, co-editor of Bruce Springsteen\, Cultural Studies\, and the Runaway American Dream (Ashgate)\, and contributor to The Cambridge Companion to the Beatles (Cambridge University Press). \nZolten contributed to two 2015 Grammy-Winning projects\, The Rise and Fall of Paramount Records\, Volumes 1 & 2 (Revenant/Third Man) and The Fairfield Four’s Still Rockin’ My Soul!. \nHis most recent work includes an article on the centennial of the iconic Martin Dreadnought Guitar for the C.F. Martin Guitar Company’s Martin Journal of the Acoustic Guitar along with a featured on-screen appearance in the documentary film “The Ballad of the Dreadnought” produced by C.F. Martin & Co.

SUMMARY:Aquila Theatre’s Much Ado About Nothing
DESCRIPTION:Shakespeare’s great comedy\, Much Ado About Nothing\, highlights Aquila Theatre’s 25th anniversary season. Spying\, subterfuge\, deception\, false identities\, slander\, manipulation and love all take part in this wonderfully entertaining battle of the sexes. Much Ado About Nothing\, thought to have been written in 1598\, belongs to a group of Shakespeare’s more mature romantic comedies. It is an exuberant\, philosophical\, and festive play exceling in combative wit\, melodrama\, and potential tragedy. Much Ado About Nothing is wonderfully intricate\, flush with surprising twists and turns\, and articulated in expert language. Aquila Theatre’s original Much Ado opened in Boston and toured the United States in 2000/2001. It was performed in 60 American cities\, ran for nearly a year including Off Broadway in New York\, was performed at the White House for the President and First Lady\, and was then revived at the La Jolla Playhouse in 2006. The New York Times described the show as “Outstanding . . . almost unbearable fun. . . gleefully engaging . . . and directed with inspiration.” The New Yorker hailed it as “Just plain cool . . . beautifully spoken\, dramatically revealing\, and crystalline in effect.” Aquila’s original Much Ado was a Critic’s Choice for Time Out\, The Village Voice and The New York Times. \nThere will be a preshow talk at 6:00 PM with the cast the day of show.

DESCRIPTION:Free and Open to the Public \n Performance\n11:30am-1:30pm\, Rebecca Stafford Student Center \nArtist’s Talk 4:30pm\,\nClub Dining Room \nAfter typing more than 2\,500 postcards to the President from dozens of campuses and other locations around the country\, Sheryl Oring’s I WISH TO SAY is coming to Monmouth to engage students in discussions about politics and social change.\nOring sets up a pop-up public office on campus–complete with a manual typewriter–and invites students to dictate postcards to the next President. \nSheryl Oring’s work examines social issues through projects that incorporate old and new media to tell stories\, examine public opinion and foster open exchange. Oring’s work has been shown at Bryant Park in New York City; the Berlin Wall Memorial; the Jewish Museum Berlin; the 01SJ Biennial in San Jose\, CA; the San Diego Museum of Art; as well as in major festivals such as Encuentro in São Paulo\, Brazil\, the Art Prospect Festival in St. Petersburg\, Russia\, and Art in Odd Places in New York City. She recently completed a large-scale public art installation at the San Diego International Airport and currently works as an Assistant Professor of Art at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Oring is the recipient of grants from Franklin Furnace and Creative Capital. Her forthcoming book Activating Democracy: The I Wish to Say Project is due out in Fall 2016 from Intellect Books/University of Chicago Press.
