SUMMARY:ArtNOW Art+Feminism Wikipedia-Edit-a-thon
DESCRIPTION:Wikipedia is a worldwide collaborative encyclopedia project made up of a globalized network of volunteers who give their time to edit the site. Within this globalized network\, there still lacks a diversity of voices. “In a 2011 survey\, the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors identify as female; more recent research puts that number at 16% globally and 23% in the United States.”  (Mandiberg\, M.\, Prajapati\, S.\, & Schrock\, R.\, 2020). Who contributes to a database matters. Especially when in 2015\, that database was “the 7th most visited website in the world” (Paling\, E.\, 2015). A 2011 study from the Pew Research Center\, shows that “the more educated someone is\, the more likely he or she is to consult Wikipedia. Almost 70 percent of Americans with college degrees read Wikipedia” (Paling\, E.\, 2015). If college-educated people and students are using Wikipedia as a main source of information\, there is an argument for students learning how to edit and contribute to the online encyclopedia that they use. \nIt is increasingly important for cis and trans women\, gender-non-conforming people\, people of color\, and Indigenous communities to be written back into history. When information systems like Wikipedia systematically exclude aspects of the human experience\, our understanding of the world is incomplete. To have access to a more accurate information system that includes representation of historically marginalized groups\, our understanding of success\, knowledge\, and of ourselves can become more whole. \nVIRTUAL EVENT SCHEDULE: Friday\, September 18th \n8:00 AM                               WIKI EDIT-A-THON BEGINS \n8:15 AM                                OPENING REMARKS \n8:30 AM                                EDITING WIKIPEDIA: TRAINING \n9:15 AM                                 LIBRARY RESEARCH: ONLINE TRAINING \n9:30 AM–12:00 PM              EDITING WIKIPEDIA: FREE TIME \n12:00 PM                                EDITING WIKIPEDIA: TRAINING \n12:45 PM                                LIBRARY RESEARCH: ONLINE TRAINING \n1:00 PM–4:00 PM                  EDITING WIKIPEDIA: FREE TIME \n4:00 PM–5:00 PM                  CLOSING REMARKS \n  \nArtNOW Art+Feminism 2020 is a Wikipedia-Edit-a-thon hosted by ArtNOW and the IDM Research Lab. \nCo-sponsors: The Monmouth University Guggenheim Library and Program in Gender and Intersectionality Studies (PGIS) at Monmouth University. \nThis event was organized with the guidance of Art+Feminism\, “an intersectional feminist non-profit organization that directly addresses the information gap about gender\, feminism\, and the arts on the internet… ensuring that the histories of our lives and work are accessible and accurate” (Mandiberg\, M.\, Prajapati\, S.\, & Schrock\, R.\, 2020).

SUMMARY:Cancelled: Lives of the 'Brows': Autobiography\, Taste\, Ethics
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Max Cavitch\, Associate Professor of English\, University of Pennsylvania\nPlease join us for a guest lecture by Dr. Max Cavitch\, Associate Professor of English at the University of Pennsylvania\, where he is also an affiliated faculty member of the programs in Cinema Studies\, Gender\, Sexuality\, and Women’s Studies\, and Psychoanalytic Studies. \nDr. Cavitch will be discussing literary taste and value in relation to autobiography—one of the world’s most popular and widely practiced genres. From “highbrow” triumphs of artistic intention to “middlebrow” narratives of historical significance to “lowbrow” tell-alls of gossipy celebrity\, there are autobiographies to suit every taste. But what is “taste\,” anyway? What does it have to do with “literary value”? And\, moreover\, what do either taste or literary value have to do with the question of whose lives and life-stories matter? \nRefreshments will be served. Students\, faculty\, and interested members of the public are warmly invited to attend. \nFree and open to the public.\nSponsored by the Wayne D. McMurray Endowed Chair in the Humanities\, Dr. Kristin Bluemel

Dr. Qiana Whitted\, USC\, and other distinguished speakers will also participate in this conference. \nRegistration Fees: \n\nScholar/General Public: $125\nNon-MU Student: $85\nMonmouth University Faculty\, Students & Staff: No Charge\n(Please Note:  members of the Monmouth community still need to register. )\n\nFor more information\, please contact Brooke Nappi at bnappi@monmouth.edu or use the link below to visit the conference web site. \n\nVisit Conference Web Site

SUMMARY:Reproductive Justice 2019: Perils and Prospects
DESCRIPTION:The personal is the political has been a part of the American vocabulary since at least the 1960s. Initially this argument was a source of identity and politics-making in the male public arena\, not the female domestic space. Recently\, this personal has been targeted in both Western Europe and North America where varying nationalist resurgences have resulted in anti-choice legislation. In response\, some American states have passed reproductive-specific protections through legislative acts of their own. Against the backdrop of culture war\, what does this renewed attention to female agency and their bodies say about our broken\, polarized present? What prospects lay ahead for women? And more importantly\, what perils? \nClick to Print Flyer\nOpening Remarks\nDr. Nancy Mezey – Dean of the Honors School \nModerator\nDr. Rekha Datta – Interim Provost \nHost and Organizer\nDr. L. SUMMARY:Council of Endowed Chairs Fall Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Future generations\, wildlife\, and natural resources – collectively referred to as “the voiceless” in this presentation – are the most vulnerable and least equipped populations to protect themselves from the impacts of global climate change. This presentation first identifies the common vulnerabilities of the voiceless in the Anthropocene era. It then proposes how the law can evolve to protect their interests more effectively through a stewardship-focused and rights-based system derived from the mandate inherent in the concept of sustainable development. \nThis presentation\, sponsored by the Monmouth University Council of Endowed Chairs\, is drawn from Professor Randall S.\, Abate’s forthcoming book\, which will be published by Cambridge University Press in October 2019.

SUMMARY:Governor Richard J. Codey to Speak at Current Topics in Counseling Conference
DESCRIPTION:Monmouth University’s 2017-2018 Public Servant-in-Residence\, former NJ Governor Richard J. Codey\, will be speaking at the Current Topics in Counseling Conference\nThe former governor’s session will run from 12:45 to 1:30 p.m. in Wilson Hall Auditorium and is part of the Current Topics in Counseling Conference\, a full-day event facilitated by the Department of Professional Counseling’s Counseling Alumni Connection. \nGovernor Codey’s talk\, Mental Health and Public Policy\, will focus on how he became interested in making mental health a focal point of his public service. This includes stories of going undercover in psychiatric institutions and nursing facilities\, and doing frequent unannounced inspections of boarding homes\, both of which exposed the poor treatment of patients. Governor Codey and his wife have also been open about their struggles with post-partum depression. SUMMARY:SONGWRITERS BY THE SEA
DESCRIPTION:Distinguished NJ Songwriters\nJoe Rapolla and Joe D’Urso are back this year hosting the celebrated Songwriters by\nthe Sea series at the Lauren K. Woods Theatre. What once started in a small\ncoffee shop as an area for local songwriters has now grown into a series that\nfeatures some of the top songwriters in the country. This year\, the show features\n \n\nJames Maddock\, a fixture on the Folk and Americana scene and expatriate Irish writer and musician Larry Kirwan. \nAn April 2014 review in Relix Magazine puts it this way: “James Maddock possesses the kind of lived-in craggy voice that would sound authoritative if he were singing the sports pages. Fortunately\, he doesn’t need to do that because his compositional skills are a match for his delivery.” After fronting the Columbia Records band Wood\, whose debut Songs From Stamford Hill was featured prominently on TV shows such as “Dawson’s Creek\,” Maddock moved from England to New York City in 2003. His 2009 album Sunrise On Avenue C won a New York Music Award for Best Americana Album\, while follow-up Wake Up And Dream ranked among the top albums of 2011 in WFUV’s (NYC) Listener Poll. He has performed with Bruce Springsteen\, Willie Nile\, Aaron Comess (Spin Doctors) and David Immergluck (Counting Crows). \nLarry Kirwan\n(born in Wexford\, Ireland) is an expatriate Irish writer and musician\, most\nnoted as the lead singer for the New York-based Irish rock band\, Black 47 Kirwan has also written\nand produced eleven plays and musicals\, some of which have been performed in\nthe United States and Europe. The plays deal mainly with Irish history and\npolitics.   \nMonmouth University Blue Hawk Records’ artists Julia Whary\, Nicole Govel\, and guest Isabella Rose\, will open the show.Sponsored by the Leon Hess Business School and Business Council

SUMMARY:The Mitzvah
DESCRIPTION:The Mitzvah (“The Good Deed”) is a one-person play that dramatically explores one of the most shocking stories of the Second World War. More than a hundred thousand German men — classified as “mischlinge” (the derogatory term the Nazis used to describe those descended from one or two Jewish grandparents) — fought in the German armed forces. After the play there will be a post-performance lecture and audience discussion led by Grunwald. \nThe story of one such mischling is at the center of The Mitzvah and actor (and child of survivor) Roger Grunwald seamlessly transforms himself into an array of characters to tell that story. In addition to Christoph (the “mischling”)\, other characters include Schmuel\, a Polish Jew from Bialystok and the play’s Chorus who offers edgy commentary that probes the boundary between the absurd and the horrific. The Mitzvah is a touching and tragic tale told in a powerful one-act solo performance created by Grunwald and Broadway veteran Annie McGreevey. \nThe Mitzvah adds to the historical narratives about The Holocaust at a time when few survivors remain to tell their stories to younger generations and was inspired by the lives of Grunwald’s mother and aunt\, survivors of Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen\, respectively. It premiered at the Emerging Artists Theatre’s “Illuminating Artists: One Man Talking” festival in New York City and is currently being presented in theaters\, universities and Jewish organizations around the country. \nThrough one soldier’s story\, The Mitzvah reveals the startling history of tens of thousands of “partial Jews” who served in Hitler’s military\, most of whom were discharged in 1940. Nearly all were sent to forced labor camps — or worse. However\, a few thousand who had an “Aryan appearance” and who were deemed by the Reich to be “valuable to the war effort\,” were exempted from the Nazi race laws. A “Declaration of German Blood” (a Deutschblütigkeitserklärung) — signed by Hitler himself — allowed these select few thousand mischlinge to fight for the Nazi cause. Most died in battle. \n“… The Mitzvah is an important piece of cultural discourse as well as a marvelous piece of theater… by a gifted and versatile playwright and performer.”\n– Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel\, Chabad of Port Washington

Born on the street corners of urban America\, rhythm & blues and doo wop singing reached its peak in the 1950’s\, but still has a strong following today.  While doo wop singing began as an African American art form\, by the late 1950’s it was enjoyed by singers of all races.  Doo wop harmony in its purist form is acappella (without instruments or musical tracks).   \nWe’ve again assembled some of the top acappella doo wop vocal groups from NYC to Washington DC.  Headlining the concert will be R&B and Doo Wop favorites\, Pookie Hudson’s Spaniels along with Vito & the Salutations.   The Spaniels are known for the 1956 million seller\, “Goodnight Sweetheart Goodnight\,” a song that defined the whole doo wop era.  The current group backed lead singer Pookie Hudson before his passing in 2006 and continues the Spaniels’ tradition of superb doo wop harmony.  Originating on the streets of Brooklyn\, Vito & the Salutations scored regional hits in the early 1960’s with their recordings of “Gloria\,” “Unchained Melody” and “Your Way”.  Rick Anthony has been handling most of the group’s leads for the past 15 years\, as the original Vito is no longer with them.  The group also contains long time member\, Shelly Buchansky\, who sang on “Unchained Melody” and many of their other hits.  While both Pookie Hudson’s Spaniels and Vito & the Salutations almost always sing with bands\, we’ve persuaded both to do this concert acappella\, harking back to their early days singing on the street corners. Returning from our last acappella concert are two of the groups that excel every time they perform.  The Philadelphia acappella group Quiet Storm remains one of the areas’ top vocal groups.  Re-MemberThen did a fabulous job last time\, on their own set and backing Larry Chance.  New to the concert this year are A Perfect Blend and the Copians.  A Perfect Blend is a great acappella group from Philadelphia who have been singing since 1990\, and had previously won the talent contest on the nationally syndicated “Showtime At The Apollo” TV show.  The Copians  are made up of former members of other standout Philly acappella groups.  Enjoy another night of Doo Wop Acappella Harmony. \n[This line up is subject to change] \nA “Meet & Greet” Reception will be held prior to the concert for those holding Golden Seat Tickets.

SUMMARY:Art Now: Hasan Elahi - Tracking Transience - an Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Free and Open to the Public \nHasan Elahi is an interdisciplinary artist working with issues in surveillance\, privacy\, migration\, citizenship\, technology\, and the challenges of borders. An erroneous tip called into law enforcement authorities in 2002 subjected Elahi to an intensive investigation by the FBI and after undergoing months of interrogations\, he was finally cleared of suspicions. After this harrowing experience\, Elahi conceived “Tracking Transience” and opened just about every aspect of his life to the public. Predating the NSA’s PRISM surveillance program by half a decade\, the project questions the consequences of living under constant surveillance and continuously generates databases of imagery that tracks the artist and his points of transit in real-time. Although\ninitially created for his FBI agent\, the public can also monitor the artist’s communication records\, banking transactions\, and transportation logs along with various intelligence and government agencies who have been confirmed visiting his website. \nElahi’s work has been presented in numerous exhibitions at venues such as SITE Santa Fe\, Centre Georges Pompidou\, Sundance Film Festival\, and at the Venice Biennale. Elahi has spoken to audiences as diverse as the Tate Modern\, American Association of Artificial Intelligence\, International Association of Privacy Professionals\, TED Global\, and the World Economic Forum. His work is frequently in the media and has appeared on Al Jazeera\, Fox News\, and on The Colbert Report. In addition to receiving a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2016\, his awards include grants from the Creative Capital Foundation in 2006 and Art Matters Foundation in 2011. In 2014\, he was Artist-in-Residence at Shangri-La/Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art and in 2009\, Resident Faculty at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. He is currently Associate Professor of Art at University of Maryland\, roughly equidistant from the CIA\, FBI\, and NSA headquarters. \nSee attached photo. Image credit: E. Brady Robinson
