SUMMARY:Madeleine Peyroux
DESCRIPTION:“The only thing that matters is the song\,” says singer-songwriter Madeleine Peyroux. That conviction along with a ‘one of a kind’ voice\, has carried the Jazz artist from busking on the streets of Paris\, all the way to mainstream recognition. Through intensely distinctive renditions of old classics and modern tunes by the likes of Leonard Cohen and The Beatles\, Peyroux has proved to be an uncannily insightful ‘interpreter’ with her consistently impeccable choice of material. Peyroux’s new album\, The Blue Room\, sees the genre-blending singer reworking some landmark musical gems\, in a repeat collaboration with longtime Peyroux producer Larry Klein (Joni Mitchell\, Walter Becker\, Tracy Chapman\, Herbie Hancock). The result is a sophisticated album that rather than just ‘crossing over’\, seamlessly fuses musical styles together to create an entirely new sound. \nThe Blue Room started life as Klein’s re-examination of Ray Charles’s classic\, Modern Sounds In Country And Western Music\, but soon moved away from being strictly an homage to that album. “Madeleine and I decided to branch out to other songs we love\,” explains Klein\, so alongside tunes from the original ABC Paramount project such as “Bye Bye Love\,” “Born To Lose\,” “You Don’t Know Me” and the anthemic “I Can’t Stop Loving You” are Randy Newman’s “Guilty\,” Warren Zevon’s “Desperadoes Under The Eaves” and John Hartford’s “Gentle On My Mind.” “Ray’s ‘cultural landmark’ album has always been a part of me\,” says Larry Klein\, “…the project naturally came to mind with Madeleine as a part of it.” \nFor The Blue Room Larry Klein has again called upon the talents of award-winning engineer/mixer Helik Hadar as well as stellar musicians Dean Parks\, Larry Goldings\, Jay Bellerose and David Piltch. To this ensemble however\, the celebrated producer has added an inspired orchestral element in the shape of Vince Mendoza’s engaging string arrangements (Joni Mitchell\, Robbie Williams\, Björk and Elvis Costello). Mendoza’s masterful string orchestrations perfectly complement Madeleine’s quest for open musical exploration. The sometimes eerie\, often sparse arrangements prove the perfect canvas for Peyroux’s musical palette and seem to effortlessly blend with her voice. \nPeyroux has come a long way from the streets of Paris to the word’s grandest concert halls and collaborating with the some of the world’s finest musicians. Still\, where other artists might rest on their laurels and bask in the glory of countless gushing reviews\, Peyroux continues to fearlessly explore new territories. The charmingly humble artist who ‘didn’t have any expectation of becoming someone that could make a dent in the outside world.’ has done just that. \nFor more information visit: www.madeleinepeyroux.com \nVideo: https://vimeo.com/59662338

SUMMARY:The Wayne D. McMurray School of Humanities and Social Sciences Distinguished Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:In 2004\, the first public exhumation of a mass grave in Andalucía\, Spain took place in the province of Cádiz\, bringing to light the buried history of repression under the Franco dictatorship. Professor Cate-Arries’ lecture focuses on the oral testimonies she has recorded with family members of the civilian victims who were “disappeared” by the regime in 1936. She examines how private mourning practices\, personal objects of memory\, and stories once told behind closed doors preserved a collective memory of the losers of a civil war who decades ago fought for the democratic ideals embraced by today’s Spain.

Ċokata Upō! – Come to the Center is the story of the birth\, death and rebirth of a nation. SUMMARY:Cowboy Junkies
DESCRIPTION:It’s been 30 years since the Cowboy Junkies led by siblings Margo\, Michael and Peter Timmins on vocals\, guitar and drums respectively\, plus Alan Anton on bass —performed their first\ngigs at various Toronto clubs. For three decades\, the Cowboy Junkies have remained true to their unique artistic vision and to the introspective\, quiet intensity that is their musical signature\, creating a critically acclaimed body of original work that has endeared them to an audience unwavering in its loyalty. \nJoined by multi-instrumentalist Jeff Bird\, the core Cowboy quartet returns to Monmouth for a retrospective of their three decades playing (and listening to) all manifestations of popular music. Expect an evening that runs the gamut from the folky intimacy of the band’s earliest efforts\, to an always surprising selection of covers (Springsteen\, Stones\, Talking Heads\, The Cure) — although to be sure\, simply delivering “the expected” has never been part of the Cowboy Junkies playbook.

SUMMARY:Susan B. Anthony Comes to Monmouth
DESCRIPTION:Constitution Day commemorates the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution by thirty-nine brave men on September 17\, 1787\, recognizing all who\, are born in the U.S. or by naturalization\, have become citizens. \nEach year on Constitution Day\, the Department of Political Science together with the Office of the Provost plan a keynote speaker to bring attention to this nationally recognized day. \nSusan B. Anthony was one of the driving forces of the women’s suffrage movement\, and an unwavering advocate of equal rights for all people. She was arrested in 1872 for voting in Rochester\, New York\, and convicted after a highly publicized trial. She and Elizabeth Cady Stanton pressured Congress to propose a Constitutional Amendment giving women the right to vote in 1878. The “Anthony Amendment” ultimately became ratified into the U.S. Constitution as the Nineteenth Amendment 42 years later in 1920. \nSusan B. Anthony will be visiting MU to help celebrate Constitution Day. Ms. Anthony turned 195 years old last February and will visit MU through the performance of Marjorie Goldman\, an historic actor from the American Historical Theatre in Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania. She will perform for approximately 50 minutes and then take questions from the audience\, remaining always in character. She is also happy to make a five minute surprise appearance into your class prior to or after her Wilson Auditorium performance. \nShe will be speaking in Wilson Auditorium on Thursday\, September 17\, from 11:40 a.m. – 1 p.m. \nFor more information\, contact Joe Patten at 732-530-4300 or jpatten@monmouth.edu.

SUMMARY:On Screen/in Person: Real Boy
DESCRIPTION:Director Shaleece Haas\nFilm Trailer: https://vimeo.com/134142788 \nREAL BOY is the coming-of-age story of Bennett\nWallace\, a transgender teenager on a journey to find his voice as a musician\, a\nfriend\, a son\, and a man. Navigating the ups and downs of young adulthood\, he\nworks to gain the support of his mother\, who has deep misgivings about her\nchild’s transition. As tension mounts at home\, Bennett is taken in by his idol\,\nJoe Stevens\, the lead singer of the alt-Americana band\, Coyote Grace. Exploring\nhow our search for personal identity also involves those closest to us\, REAL BOY is a nuanced look at the new\nAmerican family and the people we turn to when our given families are\nunavailable. \nOn Screen/In Person is a program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation made possible through the generous support of the National Endowment for the Arts.
