SUMMARY:NJ MoCA Art Conversations: The Intersection of Technology and Contemporary Art
DESCRIPTION:The world of contemporary visual art is often intimidating\, challenging\, and seemingly unapproachable. To help break those perceptions and barriers\, New Jersey Museum of Contemporary Art will present “Art Conversations\,” a series of three scholar-led panel talks that will provide context and insight into what defines contemporary art\, its transformational trends\, and its relevance and impact on society. The highly credentialed and charismatic United Nations journalist Alexandra King will moderate conversations with art critics\, collectors\, curators\, technology producers\, and artists. The program will target new audiences comprised of the public\, students\, and informed art lovers wanting a richer understanding of these topics. The series will encourage public thought and discussion with an open Q&A at the end of each panel. \nThis panel will focus on \n\n\nthe influence and\nincorporation of breaking technologies on contemporary art.\n\nPanelists:  \nZachary Kaplan is Executive Director of Rhizome\, the leading born-digital art institution\, an affiliate of the New Museum in NYC. Rhizome commissions\, presents\, and preserves art engaged with digital culture. This year\, the organization was awarded a historic grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to build Webrecorder\, a new tool to create interactive archives of the dynamic web. Kaplan has been at Rhizome since 2013\, and before that at the Renaissance Society\, Chicago\, and MOCA\, Los Angeles. \nAtif Akin (1979\, Turkey) is an artist\, curator\, lecturer and designer. As an artist his work aims at contemplating politics through artistic practice. His work in digital media is informed by his interest in the mutational and transformational implications of the digital world. Recent projects tackle topics such as natural disasters and energy politics; radioactivity and nuclear mobility; multi-culturism within the context of war; and how society’s catastrophes turn into spectacle. Although his work can take many forms\, moving fluidly between various media\, he frequently employs information architecture and data visualization in his presentations\, which can be site-specific or public installations as well as in screen-based formats including online works.  He has curated projects including PixelIST: Festival for Electronic Arts and Its Subcultures as well as the exhibition Uncharted: User Frames in Media Arts at Santralistanbul Museum\, a show of artworks employing the use of large-scale digital and interactive media. He has written numerous articles including: Creativity and Connectivity; Alice in Wonderland; Art and Politics; and Data Driven Boredom\, among others. He has taught at Bilgi University and Kadir Has University both in Istanbul and is currently Assistant Professor in Design at Mason Gross School of the Arts\, Rutgers University. He runs his own design studio\, PaganStudio in NYC. \n\n\n\nAndrew Demirjian is an interdisciplinary artist who creates alternative relationships between image\, sound and text that challenge contemporary media conventions. He uses computer programming\, surveillance\, data gathering and motion tracking to twist perceptual relationships between the senses. The pieces take the form of interactive installations\, generative poems\, audiovisual performance and single channel videos. His work has been exhibited at The Museum of the Moving Image\, Eyebeam\, Rush Arts\, the White Box gallery\, The Newark Museum and many institutions internationally. The MacDowell Colony\, Puffin Foundation\, Artslink\, Harvestworks and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts are among some of the organizations that have supported his work. Andrew teaches theory and production courses in emerging media in the Film and Media Department at Hunter College. \n\nSERIES MODERATOR | ALEXANDRA KING\nAlexandra King is a multimedia journalist living in New York City. Currently\, Alex works as a Producer/Reporter at United Nations Television in New York. Alex began her career in journalism in her local BBC newsroom in her native England\, aged 16. She studied English Literature at University College London\, becoming News Editor of London Student (Europe’s largest student newspaper) where she was twice shortlisted for the prestigious Guardian student media awards. She also began interning and freelancing for local newspapers\, as well as working for BBC London\, Sky News and Five News. A Masters degree in Journalism at Columbia University in New York City followed. In 2008\, Alex won a Columbia fellowship for young broadcast journalists at United Nations Television\, a broadcasting operation set up to provide people around the world who may not have access to objective factual news coverage with unbiased and accurate reporting. UN stories and raw footage from the front lines of global conflict and crisis are distributed rights-free to global broadcasters\, as well as broadcast on the UN’s own TVchannel\, Channel 150. In her first year\, Alex helped cover the crisis in Libya\, the conflict in Darfur and the humanitarian response to the tsunami in Japan. Since then\, she has covered human rights abuses\, conflict\, women’s issues\, international justice\, climate change\, and humanitarian crises. She has reported from four UN General Assembly Debates\, interviewed numerous celebrities like Stevie Wonder\, Pharrell Williams and Steve McQueen\, and produced and reported from the field in Mozambique\, Democratic Republic of Congo\, Rwanda\, Uganda and Ethiopia. In addition\, Alex has produced and co-produced a number of PSA’s\, promos and official Secretary- General messages\, designed to highlight pressing UN issues or events\, everything from World Autism Awareness Day to Holocaust Remembrance Day. She also assists and advises other UN departments and offices on digital strategy and production\, has conducted trainings in editing and shooting\, and is frequently called on to help coach top UN officials and celebrities in on-camera delivery and voice overs. Her work has been featured on networks such as CNN International\, MTV\, NHK and Agence France Presse.

SUMMARY:SUSAN AMONS: WILD SIDE Maine Monoprints
DESCRIPTION:Lecture: February 11 from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. | Wilson Hall Auditorium\nOpening Reception: Thursday February 11\, from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m.\nFree and open to the public \nSusan Amons lives on a rare and beautiful peninsula in southern Maine. The estuary forms the western boundary\, and the ocean stretches out to the east. Every day\, Susan observes unusual birds and animals living in this preserved pocket of wildlife habitat. Marsh hawks\, eagles\, ibis\, geese\, mink\, and fisher cats\, are some of the species included in her repertoire of study. In late summer\, Susan camps in the solitude of the north woods. The lake supports it’s own unique selection of species including; salmon\, trout\, moose\, otter\, and loons. Susan loves to sit on a rock in the stream and paint. \nEach winter\, Susan returns to the studio to work on large-scale prints inspired by images that she records from nature throughout the year. To develop her monoprints\, she creates a group of mylar shapes which she inks\, prints\, and re-inks; building up color layers and altering spatial relationships. A series of related work evolves from the printed collection of cut out shapes. What Susan enjoys most about this process\, is that she is able to pursue multiple variations of her original idea. Susan’s final prints are multiple and varied\, brilliantly frontal\, or receding in space like the animals themselves\, a memory\, mysterious\, and wild by nature. \nSusan Amons holds a BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art\, and has received 21 artists’ fellowships from the Vermont Studio Center\, The Women’s Studio Workshop in New York\, and the Heliker-LaHotan Foundation in Maine. Susan is a member of the prestigious Peregrine Press in Maine\, and the venerable National Association of Women Artists in New York. Her work was chosen for the acclaimed exhibit\, “Maine Women Pioneers”\, at the University of New England in 2013. Her two recent solo exhibits include; “Natural Vision”\, at the Liriodendron Mansion in Maryland\, 2014\, and “Tidal Edge”\, at The Courthouse Gallery\, in Ellsworth\, Maine\, 2015. \nSusan Amons is represented by numerous galleries on the east coast. Her work is included in many public collections including; The Portland Museum of Art and The Farnsworth Art Museum in Maine\, The New York and Boston Public Libraries\, The Indiana University Library\, The University of New England Art Gallery\, Colby\, Bates\, and Bowdoin College Collections in Maine\, and the Zimmerli Museum Collection at Rutgers University in New Jersey. \nFor more information\, please see susanamons.com

DESCRIPTION:Please note this event is SOLD OUT. \nThe Friends of the Bruce Springsteen Special Collection\, along with Monmouth University Center for the Arts and Backstreets.com announce a special event to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the release of The River and the forthcoming release of The Ties That Bind: The River Collection box set. \nThe event will include a special guest appearance by Grammy- and Emmy-winning filmmaker Thom Zimny who will be introducing the film\, as well as a big-screen preview presentation of Zimny’s new documentary The Ties That Bind\, which focuses on the making of Bruce Springsteen’s fifth album\, The River. The film contains rare photos and period concert footage\, as well as commentary and solo acoustic guitar performances from Bruce. As an added bonus\, Thom will also present a special one hour big-screen preview cut of the new Zimny-edited concert film Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band: The River Tour\, Tempe 1980. Both films will be included in the forthcoming box-set The Ties That Bind: The River Collection\, which will be released worldwide on December 4\, 2015. \nA Celebration of Bruce Springsteen’s The River\, The Ties That Bind Preview Screening will mark the New Jersey premiere of New Jersey native Thom Zimny’s The Ties That Bind documentary\, as well as a unique extended preview of the Zimny-edited Tempe 1980 film. Bruce Springsteen: A Photographic Journey\, a traveling photography exhibition curated by the GRAMMY Museum Los Angeles\, features 45 iconic images of Bruce Springsteen. The exhibit serves to document a great American music legend\, and will feature photos taken by noted Springsteen photographers Danny Clinch\, Ed Gallucci\, Eric Meola\, Pamela Springsteen and Frank Stefanko will be on view in the Rechnitz Gallery before the film. \nAll proceeds from the film screening will benefit The Bruce Springsteen Special Collection at Monmouth University.

DESCRIPTION:“The only thing that matters is the song\,” says singer-songwriter Madeleine Peyroux. That conviction along with a ‘one of a kind’ voice\, has carried the Jazz artist from busking on the streets of Paris\, all the way to mainstream recognition. Through intensely distinctive renditions of old classics and modern tunes by the likes of Leonard Cohen and The Beatles\, Peyroux has proved to be an uncannily insightful ‘interpreter’ with her consistently impeccable choice of material. Peyroux’s new album\, The Blue Room\, sees the genre-blending singer reworking some landmark musical gems\, in a repeat collaboration with longtime Peyroux producer Larry Klein (Joni Mitchell\, Walter Becker\, Tracy Chapman\, Herbie Hancock). DESCRIPTION:In 2004\, the first public exhumation of a mass grave in Andalucía\, Spain took place in the province of Cádiz\, bringing to light the buried history of repression under the Franco dictatorship. Professor Cate-Arries’ lecture focuses on the oral testimonies she has recorded with family members of the civilian victims who were “disappeared” by the regime in 1936. She examines how private mourning practices\, personal objects of memory\, and stories once told behind closed doors preserved a collective memory of the losers of a civil war who decades ago fought for the democratic ideals embraced by today’s Spain.

The show\, which debuted in 1934\, introduced such classic American standards as “You’re the Top”\, “I Get A Kick Out of You”\, and the title tune\, “Anything Goes”. Proof of its popularity is the repeated revivals on Broadway\, most recently in 2011 by the Roundabout Theatre Company in NYC.

DESCRIPTION:Experience Native American culture through authentic dance\, music and ceremony when the Lakota Sioux Dance Theatre performs Ċokata Upō! Ċokata Upō! – Come to the Center is the story of the birth\, death and rebirth of a nation. The performance represents an experience the New York Times describes as a “…great sense of theatricality…a visual treat…more than a spectacle…A ritual celebration that made dancing a ceremonial act.” This three-part work celebrates the culture of the Lakota people. Set against a backdrop of spectacular video imagery and accompanied by live traditional\, sacred\, and courting songs\, narratives and creation stories are woven into the fabric of the performance. Under the direction of choreographer Henry Smith\, the company includes some of the most highly acclaimed championship performers of the Sioux Nation.

For three decades\, the Cowboy Junkies have remained true to their unique artistic vision and to the introspective\, quiet intensity that is their musical signature\, creating a critically acclaimed body of original work that has endeared them to an audience unwavering in its loyalty. \nJoined by multi-instrumentalist Jeff Bird\, the core Cowboy quartet returns to Monmouth for a retrospective of their three decades playing (and listening to) all manifestations of popular music. He was selected as a “5 Under 35” nominee by the National Book Foundation in 2014 and received the Hornblower Award at the 2012 New York City Book Awards. He has been a Norman Mailer fellow and a visiting scholar at the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas\, Austin. His essays and criticism have appeared in Vogue\, The Nation\, Boston Globe\, and have been broadcast on NPR’s All Things Considered. His next novel\, Eastman Was Here\, is forthcoming from Viking/Penguin in 2016. He is the Artist-in-Residence at Monmouth University where he teaches creative writing.

SUMMARY:Susan B. Anthony Comes to Monmouth
DESCRIPTION:Constitution Day commemorates the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution by thirty-nine brave men on September 17\, 1787\, recognizing all who\, are born in the U.S. or by naturalization\, have become citizens. \nEach year on Constitution Day\, the Department of Political Science together with the Office of the Provost plan a keynote speaker to bring attention to this nationally recognized day. \nSusan B. Anthony was one of the driving forces of the women’s suffrage movement\, and an unwavering advocate of equal rights for all people. She was arrested in 1872 for voting in Rochester\, New York\, and convicted after a highly publicized trial. She and Elizabeth Cady Stanton pressured Congress to propose a Constitutional Amendment giving women the right to vote in 1878. The “Anthony Amendment” ultimately became ratified into the U.S. Constitution as the Nineteenth Amendment 42 years later in 1920. \nSusan B. Anthony will be visiting MU to help celebrate Constitution Day. Ms. Anthony turned 195 years old last February and will visit MU through the performance of Marjorie Goldman\, an historic actor from the American Historical Theatre in Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania. She will perform for approximately 50 minutes and then take questions from the audience\, remaining always in character. DESCRIPTION:The Monmouth University International Interdisciplinary Conference on\nRace was founded by Dr. Julius O. Adekunle and Professor Hettie V. Williams.\nThis conference evolved out of a series of conversations between Adekunle and\nWilliams concerning the 2008 presidential campaign of Barack Obama as well as\nthe changing definition of race in global societies. These discussions\neventually culminated in the conference on race in November 2008. The first\nconference brought together more than 100 scholars from fifteen U.S. states\,\ntwelve nations\, and four continents. \nWe hope you can join us this year for some very timely conversations. DESCRIPTION:The Jewish Cultural Studies Program at Monmouth University\nSpring 2015 program\n…Free of charge and open to all…\nA Poetry Reading\n“Poetry Au Jews: A Spiel and a Recitation”\nThursday\, March 12\, 2015Wilson Hall Auditorium\, Monmouth University\nPhilip Terman is the author of eight collections of poetry\, including The Torah Garden\, Rabbis of the Air\, Book of the Unbroken Days\, and The House of Sages. Autumn House Press will publish Our Portion: New and Selected Poems in 2015. His work has appeared in many journals and anthologies\, including Poetry Magazine\,  The Kenyon Review\, The Georgia Review\, The Sun Magazine\, The Bloomsbury Anthology of Contemporary Jewish American Poets\, 99 Poems for the 99 Percent\, and Blood to Remember: American Poets on the Holocaust. He has received the Anna Rosenberg Award for Poems on the Jewish Experience. He teaches creative writing at Clarion University\, where he directs the Spoken Arts Reading Series\, and is co-director of The Chautauqua Writers Festival at the Chautauqua Institution. \nOrganized by the Jewish Cultural Studies Program and the Office for Global InitiativesCo-sponsored by the School of Humanities and Social Sciences

SUMMARY:Visiting Writer: Melissa Febos
DESCRIPTION:Melissa Febos is the author of the critically acclaimed memoir\, WHIP SMART (St. Martin’s Press 2010)\, whose “electrifying prose and unremitting honesty” Kirkus Reviews said\, “expertly captures grace within depravity.” Among other places\, she has been featured on NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross\, Anderson Cooper Live\, CNN\, The Atlantic and Tin House online\, Guernica\, and New York magazine.  Her writing has been published and anthologized widely\, in venues including Glamour\, Kenyon Review\, Post Road\, Hunger Mountain\, Salon\, Dissent\, The Brooklyn Rail\, New York Times\, Bitch Magazine\, The Chronicle of Higher Education Review\, The Rumpus\, The Beauty Anthology\, The Moment Anthology\, and Goodbye to All That: Writers on Loving and Leaving New York.  For seven years\, she has co-curated and hosted the popular Mixer Reading and Music Series in Manhattan\, and is the recipient of an MFA from Sarah Lawrence College. She has taught writing at Purchase College\, The New School\, NYU\, Sarah Lawrence\, Utica College\, and the Institute of American Indian Arts\, among other places\, and is currently Assistant Professor of Creative Nonfiction at Monmouth University. Selected by Lia Purpura as the winner of the 2013 Prairie Schooner Creative Nonfiction Contest\, she is the recipient of a 2013 Barbara Deming Memorial Fund Artist Grant\, a 2012 Bread Loaf Nonfiction Fellowship\, a 2014 Virginia Center for Creative Arts fellowship\, and MacDowell Colony fellowships in 2010\, 2011\, and 2014. The daughter of a sea captain and a psychotherapist\, she was raised on Cape Cod\, and lives in Brooklyn. \nFree and Open to the Public
